So the 49ers are going to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, who:

    1) they signed to a big contract

    2) has a 12-2 record with them so far

    3) is currently 27 years old

...in exchange for a 40-something year old Brady at the end of his career?  Why would they trade away a winning and much younger QB in exchange for an older guy at the tail end of his career?

Who knows.  There'd picks -- maybe a Brady Successor.  Maybe a HC.  For all we know, this was all part of a handshake deal that sent JG to the Left Coast.

     - BB gets to coach a guy he wanted to coach

     - TB gets to play in front of a 'home' crowd

     - Other GOAT probably around all the time for promotions

     - Money maker for SF, NE, the NFL, and TB12

It's just speculation -- which is supposed to be fun.

I think everything depends on this season.  If TB12 goes undefeated, wins the championship, and comes away with an MVP (which the NFL would LOVE to give him), I don't know how he does not go out on top.  If they win another SB, I think there is a good chance, he hangs them up.  If they come up short -- especially if he is not at fault and given he is a FA, anything could happen.

For the NFL, though, TB12 beating JG in the SB then switching teams sets up the rematch everyone wants to see -- is it the Coach or the QB?

It's all crazy talk.  The Pats will go undefeated this year and TB12 will ride off into the sunset.

Based on all reports if Belichick had his way one of those guys would be his starter now and Tom Brady would have been traded.

No one knows except BB himself.  My gut tells me both guys would not be on the team if that was the case.  BB is developing JG in SF.  When he is ready, the teams will trade QBs.  Tom finishes up in front of a home crowd and JG ascends the throne.

From Miami to Indianapolis, from Minnesota to St. Louis, some fans want their team to lose as many games as possible to get the No. 1 pick in the next NFL draft, which would give them an opportunity to draft the player who is widely regarded as the most polished prospect at quarterback in years to enter the league.

Or, to use the rallying cry that's becoming popular, they want their team to "Suck for Luck."

    You guys are shameless ;-)

Is the superstar QB overrated? Lets analyze it...Now im not saying the QB isnt important, but if you have a QB that can make enough plays and avoid mistakes, you can win and I think Ballard understood that and why the team is built to succeed even without a superstar QB

Let's look at the prolific New England Patriots.  They are a good case study because 1) they replaced the franchise QB with a sixth round draft pick and went on to win a lot of championships, and 2) they are about to replace the franchise QB with ... someone.

Bill Belichick protected his 'system QB' with a defense that allowed him to win without winning.  TB12 began his historic run with a controversial call on a fumble/incomplete pass.  He marched the team down the field so that a kicker could win the game.  That kicker won a few championships for New England.  At Brady's peak, the team surrounded him with some great tools and won some more championships.  Now, Coach is focusing on defense again as the team prepares to bring on a new QB.

If Bill cannot win without Tom, I would have to concede that a stud QB is the foundation of a winning franchise.  If Coach can continue to win with Tom's replacement, then I would reluctantly allow that these stud QBs are overrated.

It's all situational, but I am hoping that the Patriots find a way to win after TB12 moves on.

  5. Gronk reminds me of Welker -- talented, hardworking, disrespectful, and unreliable.  I feel like the Pats will not have a hard time replacing him for a lot less money.  As for BB's reaction, it's typical.  BUT compare his reaction to the Gronk defection to this of his DC.  I've got a feeling BB would not be crushed when TB12 hangs 'e up.

  6. @ReMeDy, he has three kids in high school and college.  His wife is home anticipating an empty nest while he is working around the clock in Foxboro.  What could possibly go wrong?  Or, he has a college HC gig.  Who knows...

  7. He's a smart kid.  I remember reading that he never spent a paycheck -- living off endorsements and saving the rest.  Now he can spend his life -- hopefully a long healthy life -- doing what he wants.  I suspect there are more endorsements in his future.

That said, the Pats will not miss a beat.  They won a couple Lombardis with him on the sidelines.  They will win a couple more following his retirement.

That's what I've said in my previous posts. I've said several times that I think they are pretty much equals in accomplishments on the field and that the reason I say Brady is the GOAT is because he has helped his team win 6 championships to Manning's 2.

Which is why I heart so many of your posts.  Sometimes we just want to hear other people say what we think.

My point is that the difference is stats is so small that it doesn't really matter. They are virtually equals in the stats. There will be people who say that when Tom Brady does pass Manning in the stats that he "played longer" when if you look at both after 17 seasons on the field that stats are almost identical. Would you really be more impressed by a guy who threw for 305 yds over a guy who threw for 300?

Well there is the RING stat.  Except for championships, they have similar stats.  Brady is the GOAT, let's move on.

    @Mel Kiper's Hair  I'm just curious:

In my previous scenario where both teams are equal at every position, including HC, except for QB, which team do you think would win: the team with Tom Brady or the team with Peyton Manning?

Additionally, if Peyton and Tom switched teams for their career, how many SBs would the Colts/Brady and Pats/Manning have respectively?

The problem with your thesis is that Manning was paid more than Brady for all of his career.  In the salary cap era, that impacts the other positions.

If Manning and Brady changed places, TB would not have ever started a game and Manning would have benefited from that.  I do not think Manning would have been much better and would likely have enjoyed the same treatment Bledsoe got when a BB QB arrived.

Plus Emmit and his coach never got caught or accused of cheating.

They played in a different era.  Back when [getting away with] 'cheating' was part of the game.  Who complained about Jerry Rice using stickum?  Right.  Pantywaist fans and media are ruining the game.  It's war not checkers.

What’s sad is espn also has the DEFENDING SB champions not at 1 not at 2 not even at 3 but 4!! Tells you how silly and dumb these things are!

Part of this is wishful thinking.  Brady is a year older, coaches are off to other teams, and FAs will be snatched up by other teams.  Were I a better with no favorite team, the Pats would be a good bet EVERY YEAR.  Let's just chock this up to #FAKENEWS!

I have always wondered what it is like to be a Pats fan in that how do you all handle it when the Pats come up short in a playoff or upper Bowl? Here in Houston and other cities the local radio talk shows and medias + and moan and whine every year when their teams fail to meet expectations. How do the fans react when the Pats don't make it all the way? How can anyone criticize them with their record being what it is?

I never remember not watching the Pats.  My father and I used to go in to Schaefer Stadium.  Pats never won much.  Still a great day.  When I started driving, the local sports media was a lot less cynical.  You would probably call them Fanboys.  Great seasons didn't always end in a championship...in fact, they never did back then.  I don't listen to sports radio much these days.

I will go to my sister's house for the Big Game.  We do every year.  There will be twenty or more people there.  Maybe three of four will be watching the game.  More will flock to the television to watch the commercials.  I don't get that.

I don't live and die by any entertainment.  Not since 1986, anyway.  I'll watch the game, for the most part, eating, drinking, and socializing.  Unless the game is close, I'll head home at halftime.  Tomorrow, it's off to work.  Probably will not hear one word about the game, the ads, or the Patriots.

I hate the Pats, but if I was a betting man, I'd bet on them. Friggin' Pats in the SB again! I know I'll sound like I'm just a Pats hater, I admitted I am, but I would think the same team making it to the SB so many times has to bad for ratings. Maybe I'm wrong.

Pats vs Chiefs got highest ratings since last Superbowl.  I think a lot of people tune in to see the Pats lose.

    Lucky?

    Really?

How bout the games being rigged.

Hard to believe anyone really believes this.  Are the gambling houses (legit and not-so-legit) complicit or victims?  With most betting against a 'spread', even calls that do not assure a particular outcome cost people money.  That is why the NFL has so many people watching the games from New York.  Let's go back to the cheating meme.

  16. It's amazing to me what people think contributes to greatness.  To have a fourth quarter comeback, you have to be behind after three quarters.  What's so great about being behind after three quarters a lot?  To win a Superbowl with two teams, you have to be let go by the first team you won with.  Again, what is so great about that?  I think it is amusing that people in the peanut gallery think they know about how much a quarterback and coach contribute to planning and reaction.  I watch a lot of football and most of the time I do not know if the guy who looked bad was really at fault -- it's a complicated TEAM sport. Of course there are the salary cap and other era arguments.  I guess it's fun to debate all of this stuff ad nauseam, BUT it has been fun watching a perennial celller dweller rise to be the cream of the NFL after a FAN took over a team which was headed out of town.  Whether the statistics constitute GOAT status or are just an interesting story for the Hall of Fame, who can say.  I think Kraft, Belichick, and Brady are something rare.  What happened against Atlanta was rare and what happened tonight was rare -- QB with injured throwing hand coming back without the best TE in football.  I do not know how you can dismiss that.  The game was great, the team is great, and we will do this all again next year with a new OC and DC.

IMO Bill Belichick is the best of all-time. I don't like the 2 cheating scandals = SpyGate and DeflateGate but he is the only Coach to have 5 SB wins. He has also made 12 Finals 4's after last nights win. He is doing this during an era of Free Agency.

I would argue that the 'scandals' were the NFL trying to slow the Patriots since the draft, free agency, and the salary cap could not.  No detracting from any of the others.  Belichick stands on the shoulders of giants.
