I don't disagree that this defense is better, so far, than those old defenses. However, that 4 game stretch was a masterpiece. Like I said, they were causing turnovers and stopping the run. They were doing that against 4 teams on the way to the Superbowl victory. They were special for 4 solid games. 13 takeaways in 4 games in the playoffs?!! That's absurd."Shocked the world for 4 games"
⬆
That's why it's been forgotten
What is 4 games? Sure it lead to the Super Bowl Win.... Well played a part alongside the rushing duo on the offense
This defense has been balling since the Jacksonville Game
It's much better than that 4 game stretch defense back in '06 that you're referring to
Just to add. I really appreciate this current system on defense. It's a much better philosophy. The players are executing, and they're getting tackles on first contact. They're getting pressure up front from everywhere, and the secondary is playing awesome. If they can keep this up all the way through another Superbowl, that would be awesome. I'm not downplaying this defense, I just think that 06 playoff defense was magical. This could end up the same way. I hope it does.

The scheme of this defense is definitely solid. I would love to see them keep this up.
Imagine if Dallas and Indy keep doing what they're doing. Indy with the best 3rd down defense in the league, and Dallas with the best 3rd down conversion rate since 1972.
I'm taking Indy on that one, but what can I say, I may be a little biased.

Well I would agree with you, if you were talking about the regular season that year. That was one of, if not the worst defenses to ever go on to win the Superbowl. The defense wasn't THAT good in 06'. None of the teams came out passing except for the Patriots, whom the Colts struggled with for the first 3 quarters of that game. KC nor Baltimore really tried to balance things out. The Colts just loaded the box and invited teams to throw, yet none of them really did, again, except for New England.
This defense doesn't have to put 8 or 9 guys in the box to stop the run. Our front 3 alone is clogging running lanes. That 06' playoff defense isn't even close to this defense.
However during the playoffs that year, that defense played out of its mind. Indianapolis caused 13 turnovers in 4 games. Even though they forced 47 punts the whole regular season, they ended up forcing 21 punts in the playoffs. They pretty much doubled forced punts!! They also stopped the run in the playoffs except for maybe the Bears game, who ended up with 111 rushing yards. But that was way lower than the 173 they were giving up during the regular season.
Bob Sanders had a lot to do with that new found run defense. The biggest key to that playoff defense though, was takeaways and stops. I still watch that playoff DVD. If Peyton could've had that defense for 3 to 4 years, he would have 3 to 4 rings right now. The sad thing is Bob was the key, but he couldn't stay healthy

I think Reggie's forgetting about that Bob Sanders led defense in the playoffs back in 06. That playoff defense shocked the world for 4 games. Bob Sanders is still one of my favorite Colts of all time. I will say however, this defensive unit is looking really dominant right now.Don't think it's going unnoticed with the veterans:

There must be a lot of great kickers for this kid to constantly get overlooked. When I seen the title to this thread, I thought it would be all about the dip in the canal.
-
Sanders had a very good game. . .Wow. 9 catches for 120 yards and 3 TD's. This just proves Peyton can turn any decent receiver, whose willing to put in a little work, into a mega star!

Vontae seems to play the position the right way. That hit on Bernard was textbook on how to cause an incomplete pass. Also, when Dalton went at Davis a few times at the end off the Cincinnati game, Vontae stepped up and showed why he's the best corner in the game, right now.

Polian was a great GM. Hopefully, we may see him get another shot.
As far as nobody remembering second. Not a very educated statement. This guy holds records for coming in second. I think that will be remembered for a long time.

For some reason my phone won't allow me to copy the whole url to the page on football outsiders, or I'dI wonder how much the Eagles game skews the curve on that one. Is there a full chart or just season averages?
link it for you. The title to the page is "2014 DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY RATINGS'. I'm sure they have a game by game break down, but the page I'm looking at its for the whole season.

Just to add, the Colts on average, give up only 6 passes a game to the running backs, but those passes are an average of about 9 yards per. The league average is 6 passes a game, with about 5 yards per. The Colts are very good at defending the pass against every other position, except running back.
-
The Football Outsiders DVOA has the Colts moving up considerably. The only stat that was somewhat concerning was they are last in the league when it comes to defending passes to running backs.
-
Yeah, I don't understand this crazy love for Wilson. Even when Wilson has an average game, all you hear is how Wilson makes all the right decisions. The fact is when the Seattle defense plays well, they win. When they don't, they lose. I just don't think Wilson has a huge impact. So how can a guy who doesn't have an impact be the MVP?It is far from over, but there's no way Wilson is in front of Luck, unless you're speaking nonsense. Whoever's words you heard that come from probably hasn't watched the Colts enough this year!

There's an advanced stat to measure a teams true defense.
DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) measures a team's efficiency by comparing success on every single play to a league average based on situation and opponent.
The Colts are at a 12%. That means they're 12% worse at total defense than an average defense.
I will say this stat doesn't pass the eye test. You can't possibly watch the Colts and take this stat seriously.
However, the time of possession has helped this defense out a ton. The only thing is, watching this team the last few weeks, the defense is a big reason they get off the field. They get a lot of 3 and outs. They don't force a ton of turnovers. The fact that they don't force a ton of turnovers, yet they get off the field anyway tells me they have a legitimately good defense.

A Bob Sanders signed Colts DVD of their Super bowl run. The thing is I really just own a few hats, hoodies, and t-shirts besides that. NFL merchandise is very expensive. Oh and a Luck Jersey.

I actually think Fleener is improving. I still think Allen is better, but Allen is better than a lot of tight ends.

Thanks. This is my favorite football site. I love hearing the opinions of other football fans.Welcome to the board!

First post ever!!!!
The domination of both the defensive line and offensive line( for the most part ) makes me believe the hype. The only thing is, we aren't being hyped by anyone. That should change tomorrow.
The 2 passes caught by Allen and Fleener, pretty close together in the 2nd half, were pretty amazing.
The most dominate Colts defensive player, imo, Vontae Davis had a few huge stops. Why Dalton was even trying him is confusing.
I love what Redding is doing also.
defense getting some attention
