  1. This will be blasphemy to most on this board, the "we need to sign this guy and this guy, and draft these 7 guys and we'll win the Super Bowl" crowd, but I'd love to see the front office recognize we're 2 years away from being a real contender and set us up for a more sustained run starting then instead of going for the hope of instant gratification our lukewarm draft picks really don't provide.  Honestly, we've done as well as we can realistically hope for over the last 15 years given our total lack of draft flexibility.

If I were GM, this is what my model would be, and I'm speaking in general terms using this year's draft as an example and not having done any actual research on this draft or the next(either of which may be rich in what we need).  I would "sacrifice" an offseason to get ahead of the curve on draft pick flexibility.  Outside of a difference maker falling to us at a position of need, I'd trade down, trade down, and trade down again, happily accepting the "1-round up next year" trades.  Build a little depth this year, go into next year not as substantially improved as fans will want, but then go into next year's draft as one of those teams with 7 or 8 picks in the 1st 4 rounds.  From there I keep trading, up if I identify a true difference maker, down if I want depth, or to the future for even more picks if it seems like a weak draft for what we need.  And I would ALWAYS be on the lookout for a developmental QB with mid-round picks.  They're future draft pick gold if you hit on one that simply looks good in the preseason.  Rinse and repeat until the off chance of there being a draft where we actually wanted 11 or 12 players out of it.

We've actually drafted insanely well for the draft picks we've had the last 15 years, but our options have always been limited and that in my opinion is what's kept us to just 1 ring

  2. We need to just weather the storm and honestly assess the present and future of this team.  The truth is if Mathis had come back after his suspension, registered 30 sacks in the remaining 12 games, and found an ability to play iron man football and become an amazing running back in the postseason without sacrificing his pass rush abilities, we are still not a Super Bowl team yet.  And further truth is that we're still gonna win the division and probably lose in the wild card or divisional round.  But we have 10+ years of Andrew Luck on our team, and he's about to make a lot more money, so we need to think in terms of increasing draft picks for depth instead of panicking and trading them for a quick fix.  We need to stop acting like our window is closing, it just started opening

  3. I've wanted to trade down for most of the draft process, but the couple trades so far have shown it's quite the buyers market when it comes to trading up.  I doubt we get anything more than a 4th rounder for trading down, unless we trade way down.  Hopefully we just stand pat and take the best player available

  4. All Colts homers should follow this guy religiously.  I totally agree with this article, but he's an expert at cherry picking stats to love Luck and Manning, while hating on Brady, Rodgers, RGIII, and Wilson.  He makes some good points, but most of his opinions stem from picking guys to love and hate, and finding stats to support those biases, rather than judging everyone by the same standard

  5. Arians grew on me over the year, but unless we have 5 new starting O-linemen next year, preserving the system in place won't work.  I like the idea of a west coast based guy, gets the QB out of the pocket and promotes shorter routes.  The only problem is we don't have anyone great after the catch.  I don't get the love for Lombardi.  A QB coach for a QB that needs one about as much as Peyton did, and ranks below Payton, Carmichael, and Brees in clout in the Saints offense.  I guess I'd be fine with Gailey, Shurmur, or even Mularkey, but I wish this move had happened when better offensive minds were available

  6. I'm firmly in the Norv Turner camp if we lose Arians.  Not only is he one of the best offensive coordinators in the league, but he's flamed out as a head coach so many times he probably won't get another chance, and what I want more than anything is continuity for several seasons.  I definitely don't want Clyde.  Even if I agreed he called a good game Sunday, the gameplan was set in place beforehand and his part wasn't that hard, and all evidence of him installing a gameplan, then calling the game has been a failure.  Turner may be a pipe dream, but I really hope we look outside the organization if Arians leaves

  7. Overrated? They've been poor since 2007 and BAD since 2008. Anyone who didn't realize it was living in a fantasy land.

However, between 2002-2006 they were very good. We had quality personnel that Polian foolishly  let slip away.

I'm not sure I agree with them ever being "very good", but my overrated comment was based on Peyton haters claiming "he only got sacked x number of times" as an argument of what a great supporting cast he had, ignoring the fact that the sack numbers were completely based on him seeing where the rush was coming from and getting the ball out quickly

  8. We've had some bad/overrated O-lines over the years, but I can't imagine a group, thing, or entity worse than this year's offensive line.  If even one of them is starting for us next year, the offseason is a failure.  If any of them are flipping burgers at a fast food joint, I'll stop eating there.  If they all rightfully become homeless and panhandle on an intersection I frequent, I'll dangle money at them, then drive off and laugh just before they can get to it

  9. I've never been a huge fan of player debates like Manning/Brady, Luck/RGIII, etc, because they always turn into put one down to raise the other one up. But I will say I really like how we're handling the development of Luck MUCH more than the Redskins are handling RGIII. We're basically saying, "Screw it, be aggressive, take your lumps and learn", while the Skins are insanely protecting RGIII. I haven't watched a TON of RGIII this year, but the only time I've seen him throw it more than 5 yards downfield is when the WR is open by 15 yards (something I give him a degree of credit for because the defense has to spy him). Who knows, RGIII may end up being better, but the stat gap is purely because he's not asked to take chances, and I think the ability to take and learn from those chances is gonna make Luck progress more in his sophomore year

  10. You are way too harsh after 3 games. The man had a total of one game and you are criticizing him for letting little passes in the flats get completed. Pass interference calls made by replacement refs that were nothing but good coverage. He hasn't given up any touchdowns since the Chicago game. How can he be too stubborn after 3 total games out of a 16 game season? Exactly what are you using to determine this "wasted" pick so early in the season?

I agree it's only been 3 games, so I haven't completely given up yet, though I was against the trade when it happened. But come on, every time a QB has looked his way this year, it's been a completion or interference. And the one game he's missed is probably the best our pass defense has played (average as it was, but against the Packers, I'll take it). He obviously has the ability to pull it together, all I'm saying is that I'm not blindly optimistic that he'll do so

  11. Frankly, if we hadn't just wasted a 2nd round pick on him, thus preserving patience/optimism, I'd rather have released Davis. Do QB's still have a perfect rating when targeting him? Even if not, you have a 50% chance of a hold/interference. There's talent no doubt, but he seems too stubborn to tap in to it. As the Dolphin coaches said on Hard Knocks, no football awareness whatsoever

  12. I hate bemoaning the current coaching situation because there are bigger things at play here, and I'd gladly trade any wins the rest of this season for Pagano's good health. But I defy any of you to find a Steeler fan that has any positive thing to say about Arians or one who was sorry to see him leave. Anyone who thinks the offense is going to open up more, find a Steeler fan. I made a comment on another board about our "run, run, pass" or "incomplete pass, run up the gut on 2nd and 10, pass on 3rd" offense, and at least 10 steelers fans said some variation of "welcome to a Bruce Arians offense". Again, my main rooting focus has turned to coach Pagano's health, but if we can isolate the Colts prospects for a second, I'm worried...
