  1. Wow reading this thread makes me realize how undervalued Painter was around these parts. Is he Manning? No. But the guy played like a warrior under tough circumstances. Obviously the NFL agrees, otherwise he'd be unemployed. Dan O is a beast too and don't be surprised to see him start down the stretch after Freeman continues to stink it up.

  2. Thx for the feedbac guys. I still believe Allen and Fleener are great TEs because even though they haven't played a snap their combined athleticism will for sure be a huge mismatch for LBers. no denying that. fleener could be the most athletic TE in the league. maybe Vernon Davis but Fleener seems to have better speed down the seam.

Anyway my only concern is Manuscy our DF. Jim Harbaugh chose not to retain him on the SF coaching staff and SF subsequently had the best defense in the league last year. Last year he was DC of San Diego who fielded a mediocre defense and ran him outta town after just that one year. anyone else find this a bit concerning? Coyer was a better DC imo

  3. I understand how people cannot believe we will be dominate this year because last season was a bit tough but there is no denying that we have great players and a great coaching staff. If you don't believe we will be great this year, just look at SF....they went from a perennial bottom dweller to 13-3 with nothing but a new Hc.

  4. I am going to be honest, I am severely disappointed we let go of Jim Caldwell but our other offseason moves have made up for it. His successor may not be as qualified for the job but I gotta say, Pagano has grown on me.

    So...

    1) we still have a good coaching staff, even if it is different

    2) Revamped offense....great QB plus, let's be honest, Fleener and Allen are arguably the best TEs in football (only NE has better).

    3) potential for elite defense (great offseason acquisitions + Pagano is a defensive GURU coming from Balt)

To say that I am excited for this season is an understatement. I fully expect us to win the division. It won't be a cake-walk, but we should pull it off. Houston is obviously our biggest competition but a sweep of them gaurantees playoffs.

Cheers....let's get this season started already!

  5. The closer the season comes, the more excited I become about our defense. I am just starting to realize its potential. I am starting to think our D could have a break-out year just like the 49ers defense did this most recent season. I think our defense can challenge that of SF's this year. We have tons of young talent, most importantly in the front 7.It may sound crazy at first, but think about our young guns for a second and I think you will agree.

  6. He isn't worth being drafted in my opinion. Some team will probably draft him in round 5 or 6. Productive college career, but just a poor athlete. Looked real bad at the combine, according to reports. Can't hang with the big guys. Not fast, not strong, just can't cut it at the next level. There are some really good interior linemen prospects but I wouldn't include Brewster in that group.

  7. Start 5-6 years down the road?!? Im just saying manning would be lucky to play 3 more years. And you are just the people who want instant satisfaction. Taking luck would take like 2-3 years to build up the team, get young, and develop luck. I would rather face 2-3 years of mediocredy then go the way of the bills and be in mediocredy for 7-10 years.

I would take those 7-10 years of mediocrity if we win the Superbowl in the next few years which we probably will if we keep (and play) Peyton.

  8. Harbaugh is very respected in these here parts. Not just for his heroics as our QB back in the day, not just for his fire and intensity on the field, but also for his leadership skills. Which is what has led him to extraordinary success as a HC both in the college ranks and the NFL. His words carry some weight not only with the biased crowd in Indy, but league wide.

Alex Smith; He showed significant improvement in what has been a considerably more stable environment for him, one that he has been robbed of throughout his career.

The 49ers have been trending toward success and an NFCCG birth is nothing to be taken lightly. With the right approach, this team has every reason to believe that they can continue to up the tempo and produce.

Great post. Well though out. But if he is so good why did it take him so long to get a HC gig in the NFL? Only two teams showed interest, too. I think Pagano is better.

And also -- slightly off topic -- but what's up with Harbaugh being so vague and reticent in his interviews/press conferences? Not sure if I love it or hate it.

  9. How can you ridicule people (and I mean NFL coaches, analysts, scouts, forum posters, etc.) for saying Luck is the best QB prospect of all time and then say Claiborne is the best CB prospect of all time? Seems like someone is drinking a different flavor Kool-Aid.

Wanna tell me where I said Luck wasn't a great QB prospect? He is a fantastic prospect, I never said otherwise.

What I did say is that: 1) QB isn't a need, and 2) Claiborne is a better prospect.

People in this thread seem to forget that good QB play is not necessary for a great team (and we already have PM, so assuming he is out). The 49ers were a special teams gaff from making the SB with ALEX SMITH AS THEIR QB! So if we go defense this draft we can have the 49ers defense WITH Peyton Manning. QBOTF can wait....we are still competitive now. It was only before this year that we were perennial SB contenders.

  10. next season? big deal. Peyton can only give you 1 or 2 more, IF HE CAN DO THAT AT ALL. I personally think he will never ever ever never play another professional down. its retirement time.

why do you want to mess up by not taking the best prospect since 1983? Claiborne? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

glad the front office is not as crazy as you are. you are seriously nuts and judging from the responses here, everyone is laughing at your absolutely ridiculous ideas. take a hike with that Morris Claiborne garbage.

shake your head, and get ready for Andrew Luck to be under center next season. expect it to be a losing season. your Lord and Savior Peyton Manning went 3-13 in his first season, remember that?

Luck will stumble, and the team will stumble, and we will rebuild. give it a few seasons, and we will be back to the top of the AFCS, and in contention on the PO's.

you are in serious denial about Peyton and his condition. wake up!

    Think about it this way.

We lost a game last year 62-7. SIXETY-TWO TO 7. As in, the biggest blowout in the past 10 years. Actually, I don't even know how many years but it has got to have been a long time. Needless to say, it was bad and embarrassing.

Now, a QB isn't going to win us a game here! We could have had Tom Brady, Peyton's, and Joe Montana's love-child and that wouldn't have won us that game with our sieve of a defense.

  11. I have to assume you are joking with this thread. No way you can be serious because:

    * anyone with an ounce of football IQ would recognize that QB is an absolute need for the Colts

    * anyone with an ounce of football IQ would have to recognize that you don't take a player that you can get in the 5th or 6th pick range with the first overall pick. Even accepting your QB is not a need for the Colts premise, no one in their right mind would make Claiborne the first pick because you can get him later and get more picks in the process

So I have to assume you are just having some fun and are not as draft clueless as those that take you seriously would have to believe. So in short - good one. Thanks for the laugh.

Let's just say I'm glad you are not running this franchise.

Claiborne is a straight up stud and we see a shake up from what we expect in the real draft every year....events that digress from what we see in mock drafts. How do you know Claiborne would be available later? He is the best CB prospect of all time.

Mario Williams going #1 is a perfect example of this. Reggie Bush, who was considered by the media to be the best player in the draft, wasn't taken first so everyone ripped the Texans. They also could have "traded" out of this spot....but you don't know who would have snagged their guy in MW if they did. You don't know where teams value certain players.

  12. Try and trade pick to the browns for their two first rounders. Then try and get kellen Moore from Boise state with 2nd or 3rd round pick

Kellen Moore is a fan-favorite but no way he is worth a 2nd rounder. This draft needs to be BPA at every pick so I say we go with Melvin Ingram with our 2nd and Barron in the 3rd. Add some attitude to the D. Then we can pick up Russell Wilson or Kellen Moore (best 2 QBs in colleges last seaso, the numbers dont lie) in rd 4 as an insurance plan for PM, who should be healthy

  13. Not a conspiracy theorist but don't you think it is a little odd how ESPN seems to be the ones who make the moves happen or force them to happen on how they report. Why is Luck so good? Is it because he went to Stanford and is considered smart? Look, his arm is not dominant and i think we all know how the media creations end up when it comes time to play. Marijuanavich anyone? Leaf? Carr? Russel?

The first post in this thread I feel like I actually REALLY agree with.

  14. and if Peyton isn't healthy and has no right arm and we have no QB?

Your banking all this on Peyton being healthy and us keeping him. Right now neither of which is a sure thing.

Who helps you win more Claiborne with no Peyton or Luck with no Peyton? I go with Luck.

We take risks everyday. When we go outside, we bank on not coming into contact with a virulent disease, being attacked by a swarm of bees, etc. Everything we do is technically "banking" it. At this point, Peyton is ahead of schedule.

  15. No he's not. The right pick is the best player in the draft and the guy that just about everyone is calling the best draft prospect to come along since Elway and could be a once in a generation guy. Could Luck be a bust? Sure he could, but you don't pass on that kind of talent.

This isn't the only first round draft pick the Colts are ever going to have again. There are going to be chances to get corners again. Maybe they wont be Claiborne but they will still be good none the less. That's like saying we should have taken Charles Woodson over Peyton Manning in the 1998 draft. We needed help on defense then too but we had the chance to take a guy that people were saying was going to be a special player in Manning and we did it. It doesn't mean Woodson hasn't been a heck of a player. He has been but I've seen a lot more cornerbacks come along since then that are closer to Woodson's level than I have QB come along that are close to Manning's.

Definitely some good points but I'm just saying if we had a legit CB last year we win 5-6 more games. And with Peyton, another heap. So I say next season Peyton + Claiborne = more wins than Luck (by a lot)

  16. Really? Orlovsky maybe but there is a reason why we benched Painter and went to Orlovsky.

The defense did us in because they were exhausted because the offense couldn't put a drive together to save their lives. It was three and out and right back on the field, even the mightly Ravens wear out if their offense does that. The games where the offense could put together drives and the defense didn't have to spend three quarters of the game on the field we won. Don't get me wrong the defense needs work but all-and-all when you factor in how the defense was built they didn't do a horriable job last season.

I said at the start of last season when Manning went down and people called on the defense to step up that just because we lost the all world QB didn't just make us a defensive team and people expecting the defense to carry us when it wasn't built to do that were going to be sorely mistaken.

Which is exactly why Claiborne is the right pick.

  17. I'm going to give an opinion I believe others will agree with as well. If the colts stuck with the #1 pick just to get Claiborne, the colts organization would be looked at as making the dumbest decision in the past decade if not longer than that. Now please tell me what sense it takes to get Claiborne with the #1 pick when you can get him at #2 or even all the way down to #6. It's extremely foolish (I'm being extremely kind by saying foolish) not to trade down to get Claiborne if we truly wanted him. Also to say STL would gladly take him at #2 is a reach considering they need a LT and also have a good chance of trading down if someone wants RGIII if we get Luck. Another thing, to say QB isn't a need is flat out silly. Manning will retire one day this is a fact. When? None of us know, but he's not going to be playing in 2020 that's for sure. Luck is a prospect in which you either take or you get the best freaking trade ever in the NFL when trading down.

TLDR: Dumbest freakin idea ever and ludicrous to say that QB isn't a need.

Get him at 6??? No way! Now THAT is ludicrous. He is considered by many to be the best player in this year's draft and the best CB prospect of ALL TIME. Yes, that good. STL wouldn't choose a WR over him. WRs are to be had later in the draft, whereas CB is a premium position. If STL doesn't take him, Redskins have a pressing need at CB (Hall sucks) and could trade up to get him.

Doesn't matter. Irsay has already basically said he is taking Luck.A

And judging based on last season.....yes QB is a HUGE need.

We will have Peyton this year. And besides, Painter and Orlovsky proved that they were solid back-ups. It was the defense that did us in.

  18. Are you mad? Smart move would be to take Trent Richardson at 1. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to finally give Peyton a legit number 1 running back? I can see it now...excuse me as I reminisce about the glory days of Manning and Edgerrin James. Give Peyton a running back and watch him take us back to the glory land. Besides why give up on a sure fire hall of famer for some kid with a weak arm. Luck is nothing more then a media creation!!! Don't Buy into the hype.

Am I mad? Nope. Trent Richardson is a stud but Claireborne owned him when 'Bama and LSU faced off. I'll take him. If they want someone else I say Kendall Wright would stretch defenses vertically. His stock is SOARING.
