  1. Doug Baldwin on Luck vs Wilson:

"I'm on the record as saying Andrew Luck can be the greatest quarterback who ever played the game of football... They're both highly intelligent, both make plays with their feet and both have great arms. I don't want to take it any further than that."

This is one of Wilson's guys (obviously he's played with both) so I would hold my horses on the Wilson is the best young QB thing. Of course Wilson's a good player and he's on the better team. He's the one going to the big game, Luck's season is done.

  2. The interception stat is a bit of a farce. Some of "Luck's" INTs have been entirely a fault of the receiver or the O-line, but since that never shows up in the stat sheet they're an easy thing to point to. Any notion that Luck has had "post season struggles" fails to realize that the Colts have been outmatched and relied completely on Luck because they're not a post season caliber squad without him. Ok he threw some interceptions, and few of them were just bad blunders on his part and a few were and the fault of horrible protection and flukes/mistakes by receivers (T.Y. and Stanley Havili each had such plays this post season.) But also consider these playoff numbers (as of before the Superbowl):

    Luck/Colts: 354 pass yds/gm, 46.667 pass att/gm, 25.333 pts/gm

    Wilson/Seahawks: 222.5 yds/gm, 26.25 pass att/gm, 24.5 pts/gm

    Which is a game manager?

  3. The only thing that i dotn like Wilson, specially yesterday, is that he looked way too antsy on the pocket. like he knew the pass rush was gonna get him and he needed to move.

I noticed that about him as well, plus he had this nasty habit of running directly backwards to avoid pressure, which only further gets you into trouble.

  4. Wilson is pretty good but he's clearly more of a "game manager" than anything else. He's riding a loaded team and the nature of being QB is sometimes you get more credit (or blame) than you deserve. He is pretty good, but he's not a top 5 QB.

  5. I don't think any of those free agents will be on the team. Mack or De La Puente would be the best options at C. Bethea, Angerer,Brown and Vaughn probably won't be back next year.

As far as the draft i do like Ed Reynolds but it's easier to find safeties in later rounds then it is defensive lineman or linebackers. We have to come out of this draft with someone that is gonna have a great

    impact in the front 7.

     Prospects in the 2nd rankings

    1. Daquan Jones, DE, Penn State

    2. Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut

    3. Kelcy Quarles, DE, South Carolina

    4. Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State

    5. Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech

I do think we need some fresh legs on defense. Walter football now has us taking a S in round 2 - I think we can find talent there in the later rounds. On defense we can almost do a BPA because we have needs on the D-line, at linebacker, and in the secondary.

But if we don't look to the draft, what do you suppose we do about the offensive line situation? I mean, for next year we're set at tackle. I assume we target Mack/Dietrich-Smith/De La Puente. Then for guard? With Thomas coming back off of a bad injury (hopefully won't re-injure) and Thorton who has still yet to prove he can be even an average starting NFL G, do you suppose we should bring another G who we know can come in and do a good job? We likely won't find that in the back end of the draft so maybe another FA signing?

  6. To be honest, I don't think it's even fair to compare Luck vs Brady in that game. To win, Luck obviously had to take over the game where as Brady had to only be a "game manager" as they say. But anyone who watched that game and the KC game could tell you this:

    1. Luck has a stronger arm than Brady

    2. Luck is way more athletic than Brady

    3. Luck is every bit as clutch as Brady

    4. Brady makes better reads than Luck

I think Luck is ahead of Brady and Manning if you compare where he is now to where they were in the 2nd years of their career. This doesn't mean he's guaranteed to wind up better than them, but it certainly means he's got a good shot. I recall Trent Dilfer saying (after last year) that an NFL GM (I think he said it was a GM, not positive) told him that Luck was already the best player in the NFL.

  7. Well there is all stars......and there is competant Guards, Settling for Mcglynn as a backup is not suitable depth, If you taught a couple of fat guys off the street over a course of an offseason how to play the position and taught them the blocking scheme you wouldn't get any worse play then Mcglynn...Really...He is that bad

lol. Well, Thorton I like as the first in line on a next man up scenario. I'd rather have him be our top depth guy than a projected starter. McGlynn, I would rather have down the depth chart far enough so that it would be unlikely we'd have to resort to him.

  8. I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole. In addition to his noted durability and personality question, he's not even performing well these days. Football outsiders had him at a DYAR of -102 and a DVOA of -48.9%. Now, football outsiders' stats are far from a perfect measure of a player, but they do a good job of rating a players effectiveness (not skill, but effectiveness in whatever situations they happened to have played in last season.) What these numbers tell us is that Britt, granted in limited action this past year, was terrible. One of the least effective WRs in the league, and significantly worse than you would expect a random back up to fare.

  9. Coincidentally, Schwartz is a free agent as well. If I had to make a decision based on how the Chiefs have dealt with them recently, I'd definitely have him higher than Asamoah.

Just looked at the PFF ratings, which I don't take as gospel, but are enlightening especially for offensive linemen. Schwartz rates twice as high as Asamoah, with 124 fewer snaps. If you were to break their ratings down by snap, Schwartz would be at 0.0339 per snap, and Asamoah would be at 0.0117 per snap. That makes Schwartz three times as good, according to PFF, per snap.

And yet, everyone is enraptured with paying Asamoah. Despite the fact that he was benched, battled injuries, and was plain outplayed all year.

While C is the most pressing gap to fill, I think we should try to bring in a good guard either high in the draft or in FA, I haven't seen much of either of those guys play but the more I research them it does sound like Schwartz is the better of the 2. Several people have been saying we should sign Asamoah, even I was thinking that way, but that might just be group-think. I believe there's no point in bringing in a G and paying him well if he's probably not going to outplay Thorton.

  10. It's interesting how we're 24th overall, but 28th in pass blocking and 20th in run blocking. It just goes to show there's tons of room for improvement.

It also shows how much the Skip Bayless' of the world underrate Andrew Luck. Ya know, how Brady = MVP because he won 12 games while throwing to his top 2 targets who are 5'10" and 5'11" and Andrew Luck is just an overrated Eli Manning despite basically equal numbers behind one of the worst pass protections in football (not to mention, his top target is 5'9".) Personally I'd give both great QBs a lot of credit for doing so well with flawed teams, but can you imagine Luck's ability if the O-line was *gasp* top 10 caliber?

  11. I think we're further away from a championship caliber team than some people in this thread think.

We played 6 poor quarters of defense in the post-season.

And only played 3 good quarters of offense.

That's not a few tweaks and fixes away from a championship caliber team.

We'll be a playoff caliber team again next year.

But we're not ready for a deep run in the post-season just yet.

It's going to take more than one more off-season to build this monster........

And I'll enjoy the ride along the way!

I'd say if we can swing a good addition at C, RG, and maybe a WR, our offense will definitely be Superbowl caliber next season. Defense, I'm less sure exactly what pieces you would have to add to make this so, so we're probably further away on that side of the ball. But the offense (when the O-line gets fixed and we can finally run and pass protect) is just about there.

  12. Also keep in mind all the injuries, lack of WRs and not to mention Hernadez, that the Pats went through. They have average RBs, a couple good possession receivers, and a few nice pieces on D. As well as a great QB.

The big difference is their O line. BB has always had great lines. That line imposed their will.

Holmes may turn out decent, but we need a great C. We can't have two average players next to each other. Forget that garbage about getting a WR FA. Spend that money on the best Center we can find.

This. Our O-line is not fine. I can sort of agree with the OPs first point on weapons, while I do think we're a mite short here adding a WR would be a luxury. Adding a star C (and good RG) would give this offense such a better chance than just assuming Holmes (who didn't even start ahead of Satele) is a good NFL starter and that Thorton makes tons of progress. I like keeping Thorton as a 3rd G. What if Thomas goes down again? Well if we add a good G Thorton would be there to fill in. If we don't add another G? Someone likely worse than Thorton will be filling in. I have no idea what Holmes is capable of, but I think signing Mack would be well worth the upgrade over Satele. As far as WR goes, I think we could definitely add one but I'm leaning towards the idea that drafting a guy might be better than signing one (as always depending who would fall to us in the draft and which FA prospects want how much money. I do think we should consider both, but not until after the O-line is fixed, and defense is even a greater need than WR).

  13. I know this is only from half way through the regular season, but I think it illustrates where the offense needs upgrading. I'd really like a receiver too - but a good C (and even another starting G) are the number 1 priority on either side of the football imo.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1839318-how-the-colts-interior-offensive-line-is-holding-the-offense-back

The defense isn't really that strong on any level. I'd love to get another pass rusher or 2. How do you beat a good QB? You get in his face, put pressure on him, force mistakes. But we also got ran the hell over against the Cheifs and Pats in January. So I wouldn't mind bringing in a Brandon Spikes type, as long as we also at least bring in a new good pass rusher and a new good DB.

  14. Like I said before, the OL should be the first priority on this team imo. When you have no O-line you can't run the ball (not to mention it makes things hard on your QB.) We played this season with good but not great tackles and a very weak interior OL. In addition to getting Thomas back, I believe signing a C is a must (hopefully Mack or at least De La Puente) as well as either signing or using our 2nd round pick on a G. Thorton is nice to have for depth but I think we should and can better, especially because our tackles and other G (while solid) are not true standouts.

That said, I would like using a 2nd or 3rd rounder at WR if we could get a guy who falls to us who can actually make an impact. We do have defensive needs that outweigh WR, although I'd rather to go to free agency to fill some of those with veterans.

  15. I think Cooks would be a really good pick, but I have some doubt he'd fall that far. If he was available, it'd be hard not to take him though. What do you guys think about Gabe Jackson? I think in addition to adding a high caliber C through FA adding 1 more guard would be a really good move. It's always good to have depth, and we'd have Holmes at backup C and Thomas (hopefully he can finally stay healthy) playing along side Jackson (or possibly Thorton, with the other of the 2 as depth, but if we used a 2nd rounder on Jackson I'd hope he'd start.) He's supposed to be a really good pass blocker.

  16.

Hey guys, I believe Grigson has come to realize that overpaying for mid level free agents is not the way to go. With that being said, I believe he will go after the so call "stars" this offseason. After watching last nights game, there are a number of guys on the team who should be cut but most likely won't. However, I do believe Grigson will cut ties with Toler(too injury prone)  Landry (also injury prone, helps us long term with cap space plus he is horrific in coverage) and Satele (enough said). We will retain most of our own FA.

    QB: Luck

    RB:D.Brown,Ballard,Richardson

WR: Wayne, James Jones(provides us with a legit #2 receiver, allows ty to move to slot where he is most effective), Hilton, Brazill, Whalen

    TE: Allen, Fleener, Doyle

    OT: Castonzo, Cherilus

G: Thomas, Asomoah(very solid guard, helps our interior line)

C: Mack(Grigson will go all in for one of the best centers in football)

    De: Redding, Jean Francois

Dt: Soliai (good presence in the middle, shouldn't be too expensive) (Chapman for depth)

ILB: Freeman, Spikes(great against stopping the run, could come as a bargain)(McNary for depth)

OLB: Mathis, Walden/Werner(would absolutely love to see colts get orakpo but afraid he will cost too much,he and mathis would be lethal together)

S: Bethea(need his presence, still has enough left in tank) Bernard Pollard(local Indiana kid, exceptional in coverage plus hard hitter. Exemplifies the word"grit")

CB:Vontae, Dominique Rodgers Cromartie(solid #2, great season with Den), Darius Butler, Will Blackmon(corner from jags, adds depth)

P: McAfee(will overpay for his services)

K: Vinateri(cheap one year deal, his last year in the NFL)

In summary, I believe Grigson will fill all holes mostly through Free Agency.I believe he will use the draft in acquiring depth. What do you guys think?

I really like signing Mack. Asomoah would also be a great pick up if we decide not to try to fix G in the draft (so Gabe Jackson would be the alternative to Asomoah imo, but we should definitely go for 1 of the 2.) I'd rather add a receiver in the draft if a good enough player fell to us and we're not using the pick on a G, and realistically I'd be eyeing Jarvis Landry. If we look to FA for a WR I think might be able to find a better fit than James Jones (though he's not the worst idea). Spikes would be an option, run defense was a glaring weakness in the playoffs. Rogers Cromartie would be an option too, but we might look to the draft at CB. Personally Byrd would be on my wishlist for safety, but if we don't get him Pollard would be less expensive. I don't know if we really need to resign Bethea or Brown.

  17. I don't get why Julian Edleman would be appealing, I understand the price tag but there just isn't a need for a slot WR.

Imagine as a defense next year gameplanning for Wayne/Hiltion/Rogers/Whalen/Fleener/Allen. I just don't see Edleman being a great addition, also IMO he's a system player.

If we could get him at a reasonable price, I'd like it. Yes, he's a bit of a system player but the guy is crafty. He doesn't have the physical tools of a DHB but he'd be 10x more useful. I think we do need to either draft a guy like Jarvis Landry / Donte Moncrief or (maybe a bit more likely) sign a guy like Edleman. WR isn't at the top of our need list but it is a point of concern.

Interior O-line is priority number 1 to me. If we bring in Mack and Asamoah, with Thomas coming back, we may actually be able to run the football finally... And Luck will do even better! If we could do that and sign Byrd, we're on our way.
