  1. He was mediocore because he payed in a coverage based role in our cover 2. In college he was a blitzing lb in an odd front defense, and was quite good. It would make sense for him to struggle in the cover 2, and he should fit well into a 34. We would be asking him to go back to more of what he knows how to do.

  2. The thing is when frathis does have to cover somebody its not like they will have to do it alone. I doubt Pagano will tell them to run Downfield with a receiver with no help by a safety. They will mostly cover the flats I think. Maybe a shallow zone. these guys are some of the best athletes in the world, they can learn to do a couple new things in space.

  3. Not saying specifically him being small caused this. He got rolled on by one of our guys who is also undersized. They were both getting blown up by stronger o linemen. And one got pushed into him. If we weren't so small maybe our entire line on that play wouldn't have got destroyed like that. He fell victim to our scheme is all I'm saying.

  4. Its sad but I think he fell victim to our strategy of using undersized players. He was too small to play tackle like he did for season after season. Our tactics got a lot of players hurt.

  5. This organization has to play their cards close to their chest at this point in time. You don't want to tip other teams off to our plans because then they can take advantage of our loose lips. Like Pagano said it's all about building trust right now between everyone in the organization.

  6. I think this is the main reason why espn is setting Irsay wants to be the new Jerry Jones. Even though its obvious he is not trying to be the new face of the franchise. He is making changes that should have been made a long time ago and calling out the rumor mongers while he's doing it. The media doesn't like this and so they are firing back by saying Irsay wants to be the next tyrant owner.

  7. I didn't think they did anything possitive, but I had to go back and look.

2001 7-9 w/Davis as HC, Arians as OC, and Pagano as secondary coach

2002 9-7 same. One and done in playoffs

    2003 5-11 same

2004 4-12 Davis fired after 3-7 start. Arians already gone to the Steelers in a lower position, suggesting that he had already been fired.

Anderson wasn't on the team for any of it. As I said earlier, Couch was - and that's not a good sign regarding peoples enthusiasm for them guiding Luck. Couch was an equally high pick, and a massive dissapointment.

Ok but this guy got Tim Couch to the playoffs. C'mon man. You can't give him all of the blame for Couch. Timmy Couch just sucked plain and simple. After Couch, Arians did develop Big Ben, so he made up for his failure in Cleveland already. Peyton & Ben > Couch. And in 2004 after Arians left they got worse according to what you just posted.

  8. You're correct that he was the last guy who got the 'stinkin Browns' into the playoffs. But he was gone before the great Anderson/Quinn controversy.

Whatever QB played that year Arians must have coached him up alot. Was that Couch that year? That must've been like his only good year.

  9. And with the rumour about Butch Davis, can one conclude that the 2003 Clevelend Browns had "the best coaching staff in the league"? I'm feeling a bit quesy about all this.

That was the last time I remember the stinkin Browns having a good team. Didn't they make the playoffs that year? Coaching surely had something to do with that. Didn't Derek Anderson throw for huge numbers that year. I could be wrong but if Arians can make Derek freaking Andeson look good I'll take him as OC.

  10. I think maybe if we run a Wade Phillips style 1-gap odd front we could transition faster. Wade is quoted as saying he runs more of a 5-2 defense with the ends standing up essentially. This is why the NT in Dallas was less than 300lbs when Wade was there. Our front could be Hughes, Freeney, New huge NT, Nevis?, and Mathis. Angerer can play the Ray Lewis sideline to sideline role. And Wheeler/Connor can rotate in at all LB spots. Really it would be replacing one LB with Hughes and having him and Mathis rush standing up.

I would especially like to see exotic nickel packages With a front of Freeney, New huge NT, Nevis on the line. Angerer, Connor, and Wheeler at LB. Then 5 Dbs hopefullt being coached up by Pagano who is a secondary kinda guy. That would be exciting.

Im responding to posts here cuz of the new member limit.

Yea we need a few new lineman. I think we will invest heavily in Dbs in the draft. If we do drop a Lb essentially to put Hughes on the field we will lose some coverage ability on the field. THIS is why we hired Pagano. he is a former safety. he can teach our backs how to cover finally.

  11. Brackett's strength is against the run....I think he can take on guards better than Angerer..who is faster but smaller..right?

He's weaker against the pass because of his height and age..

Wow, I thought just the opposite. Gary was a very good pass defender (you may be correct about his age though), but he's basically a bigger safety, and wasn't more than adequate against the run.

No Bracket is better against the pass while Angerer is better against the run. It has nothing to do with size as they are nearly identical in height and weight.

Brackett is a favorite player of mine and what a great story. But he's just not strong enough to play LB in a 3-4 D. He's great at seeing the play develop and hitting the hole but once engaged he does nothing. And while he has good speed and recognition in the zone he does not have the agility and quickness to cover TEs and RBs man on man, which is required from the ILB from time to time.

That's odd..Joker..BB....I've always seem Gary as a liability against the pass..He's one of my favorite players...but he's 32

I remember all the goal line stops he's made...taking on runners in gaps

Brackett is great at tackling the ball carrier definately. That's why you might think he is a run stopper but he is not. Like I said the inside LBs in a 3-4 need to take on guards that weigh 300+ pounds. Brackett CANNOT do this. He will get swallowed by guys weighing almost 100 pounds more than him. He is an aging coverage LB that is in a system that funnels runners towards him where he makes the tackle.

  12. what about J. Powers at the SS position, is this a move that would be possible as we look at going to a more man to man cb'sd?

not sure if Rucker/Thomas could fill one of these cb spots

what would be some thoughts to this?

powers at ss? about as feasible as mike pollock playing te

Powers has potential to be a solid starting CB when he's on his game and healthy. It seemed like a significantly larger # of plays were going towards Laceys side when Powers was playing. The Bethea/Powers backfield can do a lot of damage to their surround areas. I also like Powers in his run support. The unfortunate thing is Powers has missed 14 games since his rookie year 3 seasons ago. He just needs to stay healthy and try to keep improving, which I hope he can do. If he can't stay healthy he will be the Bob Sanders of CBs (always injured).

I know in the past our safties have been interchangeable, but Powers at SS is asking for trouble. I can't see him being the 8th man in the box. He should be a FS and put Bethea at SS so he can be the fill guy on the running plays. Powers can play centerfield.
