  2. If Nicks proves it... I'm sure the Colts will re-sign him.

If he proves it I am all for it. I want the Colts to win. But hard salary caps are tough. You can't pay everyone the big deal. If it comes down to Ty or Hakeem, everyone here knows what direction the Colts will go. And so does Hakeem Nicks.

  3. If the Colts knew the RB/TE/WRs on this roster were this deep and talented, they likely never would have signed Nicks. But WR2 has been an issue since Luck's rookie year. Donnie Avery was terrible in 2012. In 2013, I was shocked at how bad DHB was. Its amazing to think he was a #1 pick just a few years ago. DHB can't even get on the field in Pittsburgh, where they are in desperate need for another WR to go with Brown.

What has happened is the TE position has really blossomed. Dwayne Allen has star potential. And both RBs (Bradshaw and Richardson) have been better than expected in the passing game, especially in the red zone. Throw in an emerging TY Hilton and some guy named Reggie Wayne, and even on an offense throwing more than 40 times a game, its tough to find room for Nicks. And as the season progresses, I think Moncrief has the skills to flourish.

At this point Nicks is here for depth. Having said this, with Wayne likely out for 2 weeks, this depth may be tested.

  4. Nicks is only 26......

Its not an age issue. Nicks is on a 1 year deal. We have T.Y Hilton who will be paid handsomely once his rookie deal is up. We also just used a high draft pick on Moncrief. Plus there's  Dwayne Allen who's rookie deal will be up soon too. There isn't enough room to give Nicks the kind of money he would be seeking (or would be available to him on the open market) were he to have a good season. And everyone knows it.

If the Colts (or Nicks) were serious, they would have signed him to a 1 year deal with a club option for year 2. That's not the case. No matter what happens he is only going to be here a year. That's why he is so upset. Nicks wanted to have a big year so he could command a big contract via FA. Not because he was going to be involved with any long term plans with the Colts.

  5. PLUSES:

Moncrief and Rogers looked great at WR. I think both could be better than Hicks. I think we quietly are building a deep WR core. I love me some Donte. I wish he was working with the first unit.

Herron was great. He could be an outstanding 3rd down back

Luck and the passing game really clicked. The offense was rolling against a good defense until our center went down

    MINUSES:

    Injuries PERIOD.

Trent Richardson once again wasn't even the best RB on his own team.

AV missed a short FG.  I know he is a HOFamer and IMHO the greatest kicker of all time. But he is getting up there in age. Nobody plays forever. I hope this isn't a trend. Not worried. Just concerned.

    OL depth.

  6. I hate to say this. But once again another Colts RB looked better than TR. I know its preseason. I know Boom wasn't with the first team. But still. Boom showed more burst, explosiveness and was very elusive. He was very good catching passes out of the backfield.

Just once  I would like to see TR come away as the best RB in these situations. But last night it was Boom Herron

  7. There really has not been a go to guy this year except for Endelman. He has over 100 catches but most of them are 5-10 grabs. Although he is very dangerous after the catch as he is fast and tough to bring down. After him it is the open guy for Brady. Dobson was looking good in the middle of the season but has been hampered with the foot for a few weeks now and seems doubtful to play. Thompkins looked great to start the season but has since faded a bit. I think much will have to do with match-ups and how the Colts choose to play the WRs. I wouldn't be surprised to see Collie get some targets if he is singled.

You are right about the backfield though. I expect a lot of runs and Vareen could be split out wide as well.

I miss Faulk. I do not think he was ever undervalued in NE. The rest of the league maybe but not Pats fans. We all knew just how special he was. I hope Vareen can do his best imitation of him Saturday night.  :)

I always thought Kevin Faulk was one of the most underrated players in the NFL.

  8. So KC supports their team more than Indy?!  Gotta get more support form our local fanbase this week.

Here are the TV ratings for each team's home market while they were playing Wildcard Weekend.

    1) Milwaukee 58

    2) New Orleans 55.8

    3) Kansas City 48

    4) Cincinnati 42.9

    5) Philadelphia 42

    6) Indianpaolis 41.3

    7) San Francisco 40

    8) San Diego  38.8

  9. What would be real interesting is to see what the ratings were for the game after the Colts in the Indy and KC markets.  I bet in Indy a large portion watched the Philly game if only to hear what they said about the Colts.  In KC I bet a large percentage were to disgusted to watch any more football that day.

Ha! I bet that was a possibility. Those numbers weren't published. However I found it interesting that after Indianapolis and Kansas CIty, the 3rd best TV market for our game was Denver. In Denver the game scored a 28.0 TV rating.  A lot of people in Denver were very interested in the Colts/Chiefs Saturday afternoon.

  10. The Colts vs. Chiefs Wildcard game earned a 41.3 TV rating in the Indianapolis TV market. For those who don't understand TV ratings, this means that for all TV homes in Indianapolis and the greater Indianapolis area (Indianapolis, Greenwood, Carmel, Fishers, Columbus, Avon, Zionsville, Greenfield, etc.) a whopping 41% of these homes were watching the game.

The game did well in Kansas City too, earning a 48.0 TV rating in the Kansas City market.

Nationally the game did a 16.0 TV rating, translating into 27.6 million viewers for NBC. This was the second largest TV audience ever for an NFL Wildcard Saturday afternoon game.

  11. Brady has the best record at home of any current QB in the game. And the Pats are 8-0 this year at the razor.

Weren't the Bengals undefeated at home this year too?

Isn't Brady a .500 QB at home in the playoffs over the last 5 years?

  12. Marvin Lewis:

The Good- He has 5 playoff appearances in 11 years, playing in a very difficult division. He is the only coach in Bengals history to have 3 straight playoff appearances. He is the only coach in franchise history over 500. The franchise is far more stable and better regarded than when he took over in the early 2000s. Before his arrival, the Bengals were thought of as the most hapless franchise in the NFL.

The Bad- He has 0 playoff wins in 11 years as head coach. He has 3 straight "one and done" playoff seasons. Stagnant.

  13. Think about this.

Coach Andy Reid is known to rest his players once his playoff seed is finalized. He coached the Eagles for years. He fielded good teams, often conference leading #1 seeds. But the Eagles always came up short in the Playoffs. The Eagles never won a Super Bowl.

In the prior era the Colts became notorious for resting players. One year the Colts voluntarily gave up a perfect season in the name of "rest". The Colts like the Eagles became well known for playoff failures. Slow starts were usually to blame. The one year the Colts won the Super Bowl they did not sit any starters at the end of the season and played wildcard weekend. I don't think that's coincidence.

During week 17, Andy Reid, now the coach of the Chiefs rested his players. The Colts under Chuck Pagano and a new regime did not.

The Colts and Chiefs met in the playoffs.

    The Colts won.

But not only did they win. They looked like the fresher, younger team. They were stronger in the 4th quarter than the well rested Chiefs. In addition, the number of injuries suffered by the Chiefs during the game seemed way out of the norm. I wonder if this was because the team was coming off of an artificial bye. I wonder if the Chiefs would have suffered all of those in game injuries if they had played a normal game for week 17.

I think this result finally settles the issue of the rest/play debate at the end of the season. The evidence is clear. Teams are better off playing out the schedule instead of trying to "game" the system for extra rest. Momentum trumps time off.
