  1. Exactly how does that work and couldn't the contract be redone after the start of the new league year?

I'm not exactly sure the wording in his contract, but it might be similiar to "the right to first refusal" meaning Peyton could deny trade proposals from the Colts. I would think that if Peyton is going to take the time to redo his contract and stick with the team, he would not want to get traded at that point.

  2. Very true, I wonder if that 10-20 mil is if all 19 of our free agents go elsewhere though. Trying to fill that many roster spots even at the league minimum ($390,000 for a rookie) might prove to be a daunting task since that comes to $7.4 mil.

I wish I could remember the title of the thread in where we talked about this. It was very informative and very encouraging in regards to our situation next year. Maybe someone else will remember which one it was. We have a lot of intellegent people on here that know what they are talking about, including I think BlueShoe and Undecided Frog.

  3. Interesting, guess they know more than the guy who writes the checks. Makes me wonder why he would come out and lie and say there are cap issues if there aren't any. Thanks for the info though

I believe it's more of a strategy to say things like this. You know, in case they release manning, they might be able to blame it on salary cap issues. If they have been quoted in the past saying this could be a problem, the media and fans will be more accepting.

The fact of it being an "issue" is more of a subjective view point.

  4. Irsay has said numerous times that this team is in a bad way with the cap. Grigson better be one heck of a number cruncher to work some of the miracles he's gonna need to pull this off. I doubt we will be able to make any splash in the FA market for a cpl of years.

Several users familiar with the Colts cap situation have said that even with Manning and Luck we should have 10 - 20 Mil under the cap. There are no real cap issues as eluded to by the organization.

  5. Yes, what you say is true. However, if you compare the perspectives of the Colts versus another NFL team, you will see the difference:

Colt's perspective of a new contract that hits the 2012 salary cap at $6.6MM = neutral to old contract's cap hit of $17MM.

Another NFL team's perspective of a new contract that hits the 2012 salary cap at $6.6MM = only $6.6MM hit to the salary cap for PM.

IOW, another NFL team has an additional $10.4MM worth of cap room with which to negotiate to make a better offer to PM than the Colts.

Yes, you are definitely right, this will give an advantage to another team if they were able to sign him. However, I guess that's the real question, does Peyton truely want to stay in Indy. If yes, they could save a bit of cap hit by restructuring. If no, Peyton will probably command top dollar anyways (Given he is healthy at signing).

  6. Now for the full disclosure portion of it...If that happens, the Colts will suffer an immediate $10.4MM hit to the salary cap for 2012. Any new contract, depending on structure will just add on top of that. All things equal, the Colts will be at a $10.4MM cap disadvantage (compared to the other teams) when negotiating a new contract with PM.

I am only providing the above information to fully disclose the consequences of such a scenario. I am not being a Debbie Downer by providing it.

What's his cap hit next year if he is allowed to take the bonus and continue on? 16-17 mill? If that's the case, he could still restructure to make a hit of 1-6 mill for 2012 and still make a difference. If he couldn't reduce his hit in a new contract to those dollar amounts, then it wouldn't be worth it, obviously.

  7. I agree 100 % with what you said. all of this is just speculation to throw us colt fans off and get us talking everything but what is really going on. I have pretty much made it to where when ever i hear anything about PM i come to the colts website or on twitter to see what irsay says.

Sometimes I wonder, with how much Irsay listens to the teams fans and his critics, that we don't negatively affect the outcome of the circumstance simply by the fanbases mood. Which could all be based on some false ESPN media spin generated to create controversy. Do we affect Irsay's thoughts and decisions on the organization? Could, for example, Irsay ultimately take the side of Luck/Rebuilder position simply because their social media voice is so loud (which in many ways includes ESPN)? Is the thought of acceptance of change creeping into Irsay's head because of the input he gets from news outlets, twitter, and fan sites?

Are some of the fans pulling an Inception on Irsay?

Let me know if I'm getting my point across there, it hurt my brain to try to decribe what I was thinking.

  8. I come in peace. I can honestly say that the Colts might just be my favorite team now (other than the Steelers). My wife has been a long time Colts fan and I admire the way the organization is ran. But the reason why I love you so much now, is because you guys took Bruce Arians away.

I know it didn't really happen like that, but hey, as long as the guy isn't a Steeler anymore I'm happy.

For those of you that hate the bubble screen, you better be ready for a lot more of that! That was one of the biggest complaints from Steeler fans (and the fact he is a terrible play caller in general).

Check out the SteelersFever forum. There has been a thread stickied since November of 2010 calling for his head here.

    For example:

Our O line isn't the greatest to say the least. However, Arians insists on calling slow developing, 7 step drop deep routes on almost every play. The worst part is he does it out of an empty backfield with no one to help block for Ben. Also, he consistently calls empty sets in the Red Zone after the running game has been working great, taking away any threat of a run and putting unneeded pressure on our poor O-Line.

You may be right, and only time will tell. But I can assure you, that if the Steeler Org. decides to hire Jim Caldwell as the OC, you will regret ever talking bad about Bruce Arians.

  9. Ok...Let me begin by saying IF you don't like the way I post, then PLEASE bypass. I'm not you and you're not me!

    Okay!

You actually made my point for me. What has Clyde done on his own WITHOUT Peyton beside simply being the next man up on a system that was already in place. Peyton RAN the offense period. Mind you Brady was lost game one and the oc ADJUSTED on the fly. The offense didn't fall off a cliff or look totally inept without him. I can point out examples of teams losing their qbs short or long term and the oc ADJUSTED.

I can name a rather obvious team this year that flopped because their starting quarter back went down. The Bears. Now, I'm not saying he had nothing to do with it, but what I am saying is that to go from arguably the GOAT in Manning to Curtis Painter is such a huge drop talent wise that the blame shifts from QB coaches and Offensive Coordinators straight on to the shoulders of Bill and Chris Polian. This is why Bill and Chris were ultimately fired. Because they didn't have an adequate back up with the same caliber as these other big teams.

Big Ben's suspension, Flynn for Rogers when hurt last or resting this year. Who was Kurt Warner?

Again, these reasons right here aren't CC's fault, these are Bill and Chris's fault, and the reason they were fired and not CC. Give CC a backup that actually has some tallent and you can see what our offense can do, I.E. Dan Orlovsky.

Who was in charge of developing Curtis for three years?

The Quarterback coach among others, and that's why he was also fired. But not only that, these players are professionals, and are partially responsible for their own development.

The numbers don't lie. Clyde's playcalling and lack of creativity (run up the middle first two downs jailbreak on 3rd) is who HE is.

Please show me what numbers you are speaking of. If you do want to compare numbers, you should compare to when Kerry Collins was QB/Painter/ and then Orlovsky.

  10. So thrilled with Pagano as hc!!! Now on to some UNFINISHED business with Clyde still on as oc. One of the last NEXT man up frauds who INHERITED Tom Moore's system, Peyton and the playbook. While Peyton was playing, it was hard to gauge Clyde's OWN abilities or lack of. When the GOAT went down Clyde was exposed BIG time. The playcalling was AWFUL (run up the middle 1st down, repeat same on 2nd, JAILBREAK on 3rd) and the offense couldn't generate ANYTHING! Stat wise it ranked near the bottom or dead last in most categories. The backup qbs looked terrible with Dan being the exception toward the end. Some say KEEP Clyde because Peyton is comfortable with him and wouldn't have to learn a new offense but that's the nfl. Peyton became spoiled by having Tom all those years and IF the Colts cut ties with the GOAT he would HAVE to learn a new system anyway. So like Caldwell who brought nothing to the table on his own Clyde needs to be upgraded also. Amazing how ONE man could CARRY so many on his back.

It's really hard and annoying to READ your POSTS when they ALL LOOK like THIS.

On topic though: How can you say CC was exposed when Peyton left? Caldwell for example wasn't fired for what happen this year alone. He was fired for many inconsistencies since 2009. Now, knowing that, please show me evidence CC was a bad OC or made major mistakes in 2009 and 2010. The whole reason our offense was terrible is because Peyton was not playing. CC had Kerry Collins and Curtis Painter to work with half the year?! CC even made Curtis look like he knew what he was doing for 3 games. Once a serviceable QB came in, our offense started to look really good. Too bad the decision to start Dan was way to late, and I can tell you that wasn't CC's fault.

IF the Colts cut ties with the GOAT he would HAVE to learn a new system anyway.
If keeping CC is a strong reason Peyton would stay in town, wouldn't we want to keep CC?! What if the difference between keeping CC and not keeping CC, isn't that he goes to a new team, but that he calls it quits all together. Obviously if CC was a terrible OC Grigson would have gotten rid of him with the rest.
  11. Do you know how quickly you can send a tweet when you have the twitter app? How is him sending a tweet showing that he is eccentric and not focused on finding the right guy? So a guy takes maybe two to three minutes in a day to send a few tweets out and now he is completely unfocused? Last time I checked there was 24 hours in every day and sending a few tweets does not take that long to send.

The problem is fans and media just try to read something into these tweets and then get their panties in a bunch because the tweet ends up meaning nothing other then him tweeting a quote from a song he likes.

Seriously, this is @JimIrsay, not @IndianapolisColtsOwner. It's Jim's personal twitter account, who are we to say he can't take 30 seconds to post some song lyrics, or reward some of his followers with early Colts news?

  12. How about our "teams owner" starts actling like one instead of Alex Trebec....

I am personally sick of this stupid tweeting.. With Jimbo showing how savy he is in the 60's pop music culture genre.

    Run a team man...

    ughhhhh

So you think writing a 30 second tweet is keeping him from doing his job?

Get over it. I'd rather wade through 9 out of 10 tweets that are garbage to find one that actually informs the fans then to go back to the way the Polians ran the secretive, lock down, and misleading organization of 12 years.

  13. These kind of tid-bits just add to my already extreme restlessness for news regarding our recent changes. ARGH!

Any trips to Raleigh, North Carolina? Bill Cowher is waiting.

  14. One of the big complaints about Caldwell was his only meaningful HC experience was at Wake Forest and his record was not that good.

Tressel, if nothing else, is a winner. Unlike some, I don't sweat what he did at Ohio State too much. We are talking *ic NCAA rules- the most conveluted, stupid set of rules ever created for managing a sport. That he tried to help his players, when as college students, they >>>ed up- is not a crime. He is known as a great game planner and game manager- something we have sorely missed these last few years. He is also a players coach, something that we have had around here for a while and I think that plays in his favor with Irsay in particular.

If he is hired, I would not be terribly surprised. It would be interesting to see what kind of staff he could compile. If he is hired, would like to see him get strong OC & DC's who know NFL football rather than college coaches. If he's not hired- won't be surprised if he sticks around here in one capacity or another.

Really just don't want to see them take a flyer on some assistant with no proven leadership ability. One of the reasons I liked Grigson's comment about leadership. You don't have to have a screamer on the sidelines, but you do have to have someone who can be respected and creates a positive atmosphere to win games.

I agree. I don't see how anyone could say that Tressel woudn't be an upgrade over Caldwell. Zimmer or Tressel, I know FO will make the correct call. It's obvious to me that Grigson isn't going to settle, or give any one person bias over another. They will go off the merits of their interviews and take into consideration their football pasts. They will pick the best coaching candidate for our organization and we will just have to wait and see how it turns out. I know that my opinion on our new head coach will be as unbiased as possible, and I will let his coaching do the talking.
