I'm not sure if anyone else went to this or not? The big names on the initial panel were Peter King and Adam Shefter. The rest of the guys seemed to be beat writers from the NFL, also Matt Miller from B/R. McAfee was there as well.
Miami...Beat writer who had been there since Shula said that there were some pretty big signs that things were not right. Put the blame squarely on JP, saying Incognito shouldn't have been voted a captain even if players voted him in. Also JP should have gotten the scoop from "leaders/vets" as to what t going on. Beat writer also indicated that the fired trainer had been there since Jimmy Johnson, is one of the best in the NFL, and thought legal action would be coming for termination.
Harbaugh to Clev....King and Shefter indicated that there would have been some notification that was sent to NFL if the deal was that close to happening. Without that happening they thought that things weren't close.
NFL to Europe... Logistics would be a big obstacle but if it meant more revenue for the NFL then that would be a driver.
TRich...One beat writer said he looked like Shaun Alexander near his end in Seattle in that he could see the hole but not enough speed to get through the hole and no breakaway runs as well. Also noted that the OL needed to be better but DB & AB ran behind the same line with more success.
Draft Grades...King thought that it was the stupidest thing in journalism to give an evaluation just after the draft. He felt it would be more appropriate to say a particular player was picked because he fits the scheme of what the team was trying to do. 3 years out is the better evaluation. Writers agreed but fans like to see this and their companies like to have those internet hits.
Combine Risers and Fallers..medical tests was the biggest thing that would push a player down. The interview could throw a player off the board if it went bad. The good front offices aren't really affected by the combine numbers too much. The bad ones really juggle their boards based on combine results, that is why they stay bad. The Combine is also really the start of FA, everyone knows there is tampering. The league has it start in March and now the draft in May to try and space events to maintain year round interest.
Hakeem Nicks...Shefter thought that Clev & Car could end up being his landing spot.
Pretty cool that 1070fan put the event on with help of sponsors for free to the fans. Also there looked to be a good mix of fans from other teams.

With the draft being so deep hopefully there are a lot of good options at #59 and Colts can trade back to somewhere in the top 10 of the 3rd and also get that teams 4th rounder as well. If that doesn't happen I could see them getting back into the 4th in exchange of a 3rd rounder for 2015. I hope they don't go back into the first this year. Leveraging picks has to stop soon I would hope.

I think that they sign Jeremy Maclin. One of Grigson's guys that they may be able to sign on a 1yr prove it deal. There may not be any real good receiver options with the draft.
Late Round pick

Maybe go back to the Browns and get their
3rd pick 71
Get our 4th back pick 122
6th pick 164
-
I think the CB was Hayward. GB traded up at the end of the second, two picks before the colts 3rd round.
-
Initially I was having flashbacks to Polian, but after seeing some of the info from, Irsay, Grigson, & Pagano I think they did pretty good. The main thing I wonder about is if they had a chance to trade back 4 or 5 spots with both Fleener and Allen and still get them? Maybe they could have had extra pick(s) that may have helped with a trade up?
I have to believe that they really wanted Casey Hayward with that Third round pick and just got beat to it by two spots with GB trading up with New England. Maybe the other corner was Asa Jackson that the Raven took at 169 and the Colts sit at 170? The other D player might have been Billy Winn the Dt from Boise St. that was picked at 205 by the browns & the Colts are there at 206.
I thought the RB pick on Ballard could have been better used on D lineman or LB but that is the only pick I really didn't like. 7th round is a roll of the dice.
The moves before the draft were pretty good but thought bailing out the Jets and taking Stanton wasn't needed and wasted a 6th round pick. Got to believe that they could have had any number of back QBs once the camp rolled around.
Overall B+

So he thinks this guy is a starter, BPA, doubt it. There had to be a better option for a lineman, CB, anything but RB. If they need a blocker, pick someone this summer before camp. They are now left with basically (4) 7 round picks. CB was deep for this draft and they could have used 2 and to this point have 0. Changing to a new defense and they only have a defensive player, but seems like a good one. I guess they will go shopping on the UDFA store to find a CB.
-
What the.... They really needed to give up 4&5 for this? Gave away 6 round pick twice & end up with Stanton for back & bail the Jets out on that deal.
This team needed probably 2 CB's & line help. Nothing!
Poor Chuck!!!
Where is Polian?
-
I hope Brandon Boykin, CB, falls to them.
-
Guess they didn't like any of the possible trades. Not a bad pick but have to believe they could dropped back a few spots, still got Fleener, and picked up a 4th round pick
-
Trading down 6 spots with Carolina would be a great option. Trade 34 and get back pick 40 & 104(4th). If Denver doesn't take Fleener @ 35 probably good chance Colts can still get him. If Fleener goes then there will be good choices with 40th pick
-
Maybe we could trade our 2nd and Freeney? I heard he is valued as a 4th-6th rounder. Like Asante Samuel.
I think the Bears are still playing the T2 Defense, that might be a good spot for Freeney? If Colts could get a 4th for him that would be pretty good. I think the Colts would still need to add something else package to get to 19 spot.
-
With many so many teams supposedly wanting to trade down, I wonder if they could find a good offer? Sounds like they would have to at least jump ahead of Pittsburgh at 24 to get it done? I wonder if the Colts could get away with trading their 2nd pick this year & next years 2nd to pull it off? I would go for it. Maybe with Cleveland at 22? What do you think?
-
Trade back to someone who wants Hill or Randle at34
-
Yes, worded that bad. Most options that they would have at 34 would still be there at 40, so unless there is a player they love at 34 then trade down if possible
-
Think Pagano would be loving this scenario
-
I think Grigson mentioned that the he thought O line was the strongest part of this draft. With his background I think he would be able to fill some O line spots in later rounds or in UFA.
-
I gotta believe that Pagano wants a difference maker on D, front 7, with the second pick. I would take Dont'a Hightower if he is there at 34 but I am guessing that he is gone and Fleener is also off the board at this point.
Trade the 34th to Carolina for their 2nd(40) &4th(104). If there isn't a front 7 player that they really like at 40 then take Janoris Jenkins. Draft at 104 or try and package it to jump back into round 3.
-
I am guessing that 34 DT the Colts want is not there at pick 34, and they can get 2 extra 4th round picks with the two trade backs.
-Trade the 34th pick to Carolina and get their 2nd (40) & 4th (104).
- Then trade the 40th pick to Philadelphia for their 2nd (46) & 4th (114).
I mainly looked at the CBS site rankings as well as the Rang's Gang article for picks.
Andrew Luck, QB Standford(1)
Shea McClellin, OLB Boise State(46)
Brandon Boykin, CB Georgia (64)
Orson Charles, TE Georgia (97)
Marvin Jones, WR Cal (104)
Brandon Brooks, OG Miami OH (114)
Josh Norman, CB Costal Carolina (136)
Jack Crawford, DE Penn St (170) - compensatory
Hebron Fangupo, DT BYU (206)- compensatory
Duke Ihenacho, SS San Jose State (208)
Brandon Hardin, FS Oregon St (214)
Dustin Waldron OT Portland St (253)- compensatory
Hopefully I have the pick numbers correct?
-
Decent draft but I would be surprised to see the Eagles giving up 46 and 51 for Colts at 34, based on trade value chart
-
any idea when the league awards compensatory picks?
