Which is crazy to me why the owner would want to do that.  The trade value in a top 10 pick can be worth more than the actual person you may get.  According to draft value charts, we could have gotten a first and a second round pick for a top 10 pick from any team picking at 15 or above.

Losing can become a habit.  You never want to tank games.  Besides, if we lost our last 2, what are the chances that Pagano would have been signed again?  We could be facing another complete rebuild again.

We can all speculate or guess about trading up or down but even that is what it is. All this would depend on who was taken before the Colts pick. If they were waiting for one player and he was gone, trading down might be an option. With the needs this teams does need I don't see them trading up and trading much needed picks away.

This is going to be a tough first round guess on the Colts anyway.  We can go so many directions.  We need a young franchise RB like Elliott, or a #2 CB, or a young safety, or an OLB.  We have 2 potential FA TEs on our roster too.  If we let one leave, do we spend a first-rounder on the top TE?  Not sure I would get OL in first, but definitely 2nd and/or 3rd.

I'm not sure we need 3. When we get a real C that will  help the entire line especially our G's Thorton has the tools to be a good G. I would still bring in someone to challenge him. I really like Feeney should be a day 3 guy or a FA.

The thing that has me concerned is how happy the Owner and GM seem with RT. I waa thinking we would draft a RT and sign a real C in FA.

Joe Reitz is my favorite Colt, because he spent several years as our sixth man on the OL and a very good one.  He was always a security blanket for us when one of the starters went down.  He kept working and finally got his starting spot.  That being said, if we can draft somebody who is better as a RT, then I'm all for moving Reitz back to his "first off the bench" roll.  He's a darn sight better than bringing in that no-talent Khaled Holmes.  Holmes needs to go.  He comes in and gets our QBs hurt and kills any run game we've established.  Rodney Harrison was much improved this season over his rookie year.  He's not a pro-bowl candidate, but he's at least become average at the NFL level.  Thornton can't stay healthy and is better at run blocking than pass blocking.

Holmes may be the most intelligent guy on the team i have heard it said by player/players.
Very experienced with the system, and YOU think he sucks calling protections.
It must be Soooooo difficult! Good grief!

Khaled Holmes' problem isn't mental, it's physical.  He's just not NFL caliber.  Everytime he goes in the game I see him being pushed into the backfield or his man running around him to make a play on our side of the line of scrimmage.  He went in for Thornton after Gore had been having some success running the ball and our running game was zilch after the change.  Holmes would be the first player I'd jettison.

  5. The problem with the Colts is they are a Corvette (Luck, TY, Gore, etc.) with a 4 cylinder engine (the offensive line). I don't care how good your skill players are if you have NO line then it makes it very difficult for the skill players to perform. Luck got hit 11 times last night. This line is BAD. Possibly worst in the league bad. That is all entirely on Grigson. He has failed miserably when it comes to the OL every since he took over. No excuse for it whatsoever. Looks like Luck will once again be near the top of the league in QB hits taken. That is if he is able to survive the rest of the year.

I warned last year that if we did not address the OL, we were in danger of turning Luck into Tim Couch. Pagano publicly said after our fiasco against the Pats last year that he and Grigson got the message that we must upgrade both lines. I like the additions of Anderson and Parry, but we really did little to improve OL.
  6. It's gonna be Pep, folks. Get used to it.

The only benefit to Pep as head coach is that he would no longer be the OC. We might actually throw less than 45 times a game.

I would love to bring Jim Harbaugh in. Reunite he and Luck. Look at what he did in SF with Krapneck at QB.

But it seems pretty clear that Grigson wants a yes man who is going to do his bidding the way he wants it done, with no questions asked or concerns raised.

He also loves keeping Luck connected to his Stanford acquaintances, and Pep fits the bill on every level there.

  7. I like the idea of McDaniels. I have a hunch he'll be fielding calls from a lot of teams though, and he doesn't seem like the type that would be OK with having to answer to Grigson.

If Dorsett doesn't pan out BIG, Grigson should be gone as well.  I'm a Purdue man and really have been backing Grigs, but he's made some monumental errors on 1st rounders and as a result has depleted this team's upper echelon talent.  That's not to say he hasn't had some good draft picks as well, but Trent Richardson, Werner, and I think he was here when the decision to get rid of Jerry hughes was made.  He's done a nice job of bringing in veterans, but they are usually stop-gap 1 or 2 year solutions.

  8. To me, the coordinator at any point in the game should be able to tell the QB that the game is getting away from him and we're not going to audible out of every run play four series in a row.

Blame Luck for not being sharp, but blame Pep for not reeling Luck in at some during that 16-3 streak of paases vs runs.

Pep is part of the problem, but nobody seems to give Luck much grief for the way the O is and has been playing.  Everyone talks about Luck's talent level and how he is the best young QB in the league.  It's year 4.  He needs to step up.  Brady and Rothlisberger won SB as rookies.  Maybe he hasn't had the supporting cast he's needed yet, but from a skill position standpoint, he can't complain too much about his weapons.  I'll be the first to admit that the OL is far from the NFL's best and I think that goes right to the GM and Head Coach.  They apparently think they can coach 5th and 6th rounders up to play like 1st rounders.  Yes, technique and communication is 90% of the deal on the OL, but that other 10% can be the difference between winning and losing.  Given that Pep's offense is supposed to be a version of the West Coast Offense, we aren't a very good screen team.  Maybe we don't have enough athleticism on the OL to run screens, but we need more ways to beat these blitzes if we're going anywhere this year.

  9. I admit I am one of the first to hammer Grigson over the OL.  I am not going to let him completely off the hook as I think he has made some questionable decisions in this area,  but I think this article highlights some interesting reasons that could at least be contributing to the problem.

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/pete-prisco/25285796/preseason-musings-why-the-quality-of-o-line-play-in-the-nfl-is-getting-worse

This guy may have a point, but my question is why do NFLteams not have OL coaches who just handle teaching technique?  They pay QBs and left tackles millions of dollars a year and can't spring a few extra bucks for a technique coach?  Hard to believe that is the case.

  10. Yeah, considering  ole "High Ankle" Jones will probably miss at least that much time.

Let's hope the oaching staff doesn't do what they did with Holmes' high ankle sprain last year.  Sit him out for most of the season, then bring him back at a different position.  Never could figure out why it took so long to get Holmes back at OC last year.

  11. to your first question no. They beat the Vikings and Texas. With Pagano that year and the Packers with Arians other than that they didn't beat a playoff team that season. Most of their "big" wins have come with Pagano coaching the team including the Seahawks.49ees, Chiefs (twice), and Broncos (twice).

I'll give you T-Rich was a bad trade and to this point Werner has not lived up to the billing of a first round pick. He couldn't predict injury with Donald Thomas so let's not put that in the same boat as T-Rich. RJF and Landry were bigger mistakes than Thomas. DHB was here on a cheap one year deal so I don't really see how that was a really bad move. They took a flyer on a guy and it didn't workout. It happens. DHB's deal hardly crippled this team in anyway when they wanted to move forward without him. Grigson has made mistakes but I feel his hits have out weighed his mistakes as a whole. Run d has to get better, hopefully Langford, Anderson, and Parry will help that. Early signs from them have been positive. As for oline it was a trainwreck when Grigson took over with one NFL level starter in Castonzo. He's found Mewhort who had a really good rookie year and held up very well against the Rams front seven. Holmes looks like he's coming around at center. Grigson now has three good young olinemen in place. He needs help at the guard spot. Still in three years it's getting better. No they aren't the Cowboys front but they aren't the hot mess they were when he took over either.

This team was an aging 2-14 team in real trouble with the cap when Grigson and Pagano got here. Since then they have gone 11-5 three straight years, been to the playoffs every year, won two division titles, won three playoff games, been to an AFCCG, and gone a round further every year, you don't do that having both a bad coach and a bad GM. Someone is doing their job right.

Let's not forget that Grigson and Pagano were handed Andrew Luck.  He was a no-brainer (almost-there are a few teams who always seem to mess up those kind of opportunities).  The main reason we are perennial AFC South champs is because we are the only team with a top QB.  I think Werner may be a pretty good player, but he's probably in the wrong system.  He's more of a 4-3 DE IMHO.  Reminds me of Jerry Hughes who was tried under the wrong system when Polian drafted him.  Both Pagano and Grigson stated at the end of last season that they really took those lopsided losses to heart and that they would seriously address our front line on both sides of the ball.  They did address those areas with free agency, but seemed to wait until late rounds in the draft.  We need to realize that a few of our free agent pick ups will help, but that help is likely short-term and we need to fill those positions long-term through the draft.

  12. This kind of friction happens in most situations.     Friction between the HC and the GM happens all the time.    This is NOT something new or should it be shocking to anyone.

Pagano's job is on the line.    Grigson has made a number of serious missteps that have prevented this team from being better.  That's on Grigson.

As for the getting out butt kicked by better teams -- that was last year.

And as far back as the year before last we beat Seattle (SB winner) Denver (SB runner-up) SF (in the '12 SB)  and playoff team Kansas City -- twice.

So, I think the losing to better teams issue is way overblown and very misleading.

Things will all play out this year.    It worked in Dallas last year.    Jones didn't extend Garrett, and Garrett led Dallas to a 12-4 season.     If we have a very good year this year,  then Pagano will be back.    If not, he'll be coaching elsewhere next year.

Weren't most of those wins in the year when Ariens was at the helm subbing for Pagano?  Despite the expenditure of draft picks and free agents, I don't think our offense has been as explosive since Ariens left.  I'm a Purdue man and have been rooting for Grigson to succeed, but he has really made some poor draft decisions.  It's too early to critcize him for Dorsett, but Richardson, Werner, Donald Thomas, Hetward-Bey, etc. were some really bad moves.  He's had some good ones too, but it's a mixed bag and a couple of his misses really hurt this team.  We have been losing to those good teams because we are getting whipped up front.

  13. Would've liked if Jay Ajayi was still available. I liked him as a 5th or 6th.

Would've liked if Jay Ajayi was still available. I liked him as a 5th or 6th.

Really disappointed thjat we didn't get either Jay Ajayi or Jeremy Langdon with our first pick on Day 3.  Liked them both a ton better than Robinson.  Saw Robinson in a couple of games last year and was unimpressed.  Overall, I was pretty disappointed with Grigson's whole Draft.  It was advertised that drafting was his strong suit when he was hired.  Don't see it.

  14. I can see him making a play for at least 1 difference maker on both lines.

Iupati and Knighton fit that bill.

Possibly Tamba Hali, Wisniewski as well.

I think I read that Roy Helu from the Skins is a FA this year.  He's not a superstar, but I really like his effort and reliability as a RB.  Great out of the backfield, too.  He'd make a good back-up and occasional 3rd-down guy.

  15. I don't care that Dawson didn't look great today. The kids a stud, and his tape backs it up. He's going to be a Lavonte David type star IMO. So I still want him. I've never been big on McKinney personally. I really like Anthony now though. I wouldn't mind him if we don't get Dawson. BTW, I think we need to pick up an ILB in the 6th or so too to be a backup since A. Jackson and McNary are both gone.  A guy like Hull would be nice if he's there.

Late round, I like Hull too.  I also like Jake Ryan from Michigan.  He could play inside or outside and this will be his 2nd year back from knee injury.  I know everybody now thinks knee surgery is now a one year return to form, but I still think it takes 2.(especially phychologically).  I think Hull is also coming off year-old surgery.

  16. I may be in the minority here but I actually want to see Richardson succeed as a colt...  I think with a new RB coach, upgraded offensive line and a pass first mind set, he would do better.  He needs to develop a chip on his shoulder and realize this is it.  he has potential.

I bet the coaching staff gives him this summer to show what he truely has.  he can rise above or sink its up to him now.  I think about Brown and all the grief we gave him, how we all thought he was terrible.  but then something clicked and he started to produce.  I want to see that happen with Trent.

RB Camp will be interesting regardless of Richardson, I am excited to see Ballard again, and see how we utilize all of the backs we have on the roster.  I don't think we need anymore via draft or FA.  I would rather take any extra flyer on a CB, S or OL before we get yet another RB.

Richardson's a bust.  Read an article quoting a staffer for the Browns who was responsible for making sure that Richardson and Josh Gordon showed up on time for practices, road trips, etc.  That was in his job description!!
