Nick Foles still has a very high ceiling and is one of the best throwers when he's on his game.
Reich was able to get that out of him before so there's a chance for repeatition and getting a good pick on top of that sounds very intriguing.
But I fear the Jags don't want to give a good drafter in Ballard another pick and keep Foles out of the South.

I feel like Ballard puts a big emphasis on getting high tier athletes at WR. Last year he added Fountain and Pascal who jumped through the roof and Cain ran a 4.4 at 6'2.
The theme we heard about our coaching staff has been that they are great teachers. We even let go of our o-line coach, who did a good job, because a coach that is said to be a great fundamental guy was availble. Sirianni is also said to be a great teacher by some chargers WRs he worked with.
All that makes me believe that the theme for the draft is going to be about adding top tier athletes who have questions concerning their technique, production or level of play in their division. Since our staff is stacked with great teachers we are going to get the best out of them but the last checkbox for the prospects is going to be their character. Our coaches are here to teach and not to look after the players off the field.
Johnsons athletic profile is not good enough imo to be considered by the colts. I would look more towards guys like Boykin, E.Hall, D.Slayton, C.Thompson(Jonsons teammate), D.Sills,A.Dulin or A. Isabella to be selected on day 2-3.

If the Colts don't take a WR early, a guy named David Sills might be interesting. 6'3", 210 lbs, former QB. Pretty productive at WVU. Projected to go in the 5th or so. Just a thought.
Really like him for the Colts too. He is by far the best WR Prospect at tracking the ball throw the air. He combines that with a good sense for running underneath the ball which allows him to catch over the shoulder throws nicely infront of his chest.
He would give us a threat up the seam, which we didn't have since reggie. Luck is so good at these touch throws over the shoulder it was a bit sad to see that we could only throw them to TY last year and because of his size deficits it was only really possible when the safety was far off since Luck needed to throw in a high arc to get over the underneath coverage and not throw over TYs head.
Another thing i really like about Sills is his understanding of when and how to fake on routes( this may be because of his QB past). I hate WR that throw out elaborate fakes and try to break a CBs ankles but end up making their QB wait an extra second until they finish their route. He does a great job of making defenders bit just enough so he gets 1-2 yards seperation and can catch without interference and be open for his QB as fast as possible.

I think we are going to skip any S in the first 2 rounds. Since Eberfluss is here we have used only the minimal amount of capital, money wise and draft wise, on the backfield. The impact of early draftees on the lines is bigger than that of DBs in Ballards eyes i guess. I expect D- and O-line being the first 3 picks. I would be pretty happy with a haul of Wilkins, Lindstrom and Z.Allen.

Every pick is a probable bust and Metcalf at 26 would be very enticing. Agree with the safeties being unlikely. We didn't invest in the position in FA and also during last years draft we did not pull the trigger on one while there were some good prospects available. Polite also doesn't really fit the bill of a DL with tons of burst that we have added over last year. Guys like Wrenn or Z.Allen are more likely DL picks on day 2.
-
Personally i think we are going to stay at 26 and take J.Simmons and D.Samuel early 2nd. Then hope that our docs are confident about their injury history.
-
Trading out of the first because there are no players talented enough to go there seems unlikely to me. Not because I think the idea is bad but when you want to move back because of the talent level why would somebody else want to move up and pay you. If there's a plentitude of players at the position we want i could see a move though.
-
Hockenson is the 3rd best player in this draft behind q.williams and bosa. If he would be available at 26 it would be no-brainer to draft him but even with TE not being an highly sought after position in the draft he is going to be a top15 lock.
Last year Nelson also only dropped to 6, although Guards rank a bit higher on the position foodchain, and teams picking around 10 will be hard to convince that level go past them even if the position isn't sexy.

,With the combine in the books I ended up doing some mocks on the new Draft Network site. This one was my favourite, because it isn't too ridicolous but I still got players i like a lot.
26. Wilkins has been talked about in this thread a lot and he appears as the most natural fit for us this year. Heres hoping he will actually be available for us.
34. Risner is my favourite O-lineman this year. 3-year captain, First team BIG12 for 3 straight years, all-american on multiple teams and started 50 out of 51 games. Strong as an oxe, with the smarts to play anywhere on the line and excellent hand-usage. Got away with some bad footwork because he could outmuscle anyone but I belive he can improve there with better coaching. He has enough length(34" arms and 10+" hands) to play tackle and take over the LT when Costanzo is no more. Meanwhile he could be an elite 6th man or start at RG or RT.
59. Sills reads defenses well and understands how to effectively fake out DBs with his routes.
His ball-tracking is best in the class and he is a beast on over the shoulder throws, which
Luck is great throwing at.
89. Crosby fits the typical Ballard player profile. Small school with good production and athletic. Too bad he isn't a senior, so he couldn't go to the senior bowl.
129. Jackson is a bulky corner. Reminds me a lot of Quincy. Similar Ballskills and bullish press
at the LoS. Surprised me with his 4.45 in the 40, thought he would be way slower. As a
whole his combine was great. He is also a menace defending the outside against runs.
135. Jelks is a super long EDGE who lacks some wiggle but i think in this D his explosiveness off
the snap and his length is going to make him be effective. Would love to see him add
10 pounds of muscle.
-
We can take his salary but it's going to be interesting whether Ballard is willing to give up a pick. In all of his trades so far he hasn't given up a pick straight for a player. Haven't watched the bengals so the only memory of him i have is him burning quincy wilson for a TD against us where he looked 3 times faster than quincy which was impressive.
-
I don't think he is good enough of a receiver to be worth an early draft pick, especially in reichs scheme where he moved the rb outside quite often. Hynes basically played 50% WR.
-
Pretty good to use as a tool and the integrated scouting reports are neat too.
Would be pretty satisfied with this haul.
Simmons is a top 15 talent that might be there because of his injury but he will not go any further than the raiders last 1st rounder. Gruden has the time to wait on him to heal.
Samuel is my top WR and a tremendous fit in reichs quick hitting scheme.
Williams got great length and reminds me a lot of desir.
Wren got great burst off the line and fits the penetrating DL style well.
Sills comes from a sophisticated Offense in WV and reads defenses well and also knows how to fake out CBs and Ss. He is an QB friendly receiver because he understands that getting open quick is crucial and keeps the QB from holding the ball a quarter second longer than needed. He got good length and tracks the ball well too. I think he would be able to operate on a level with luck when it comes to reading defenses, which has been crucial with luck and hilton, who are very hard to stop, because the both read defenses so well.

Really like Jones and he's one of the few interior d-line prospects that are impossible to defend 1v1 as a guard and we did a great job last year with giving our guys 1v1 matchups using pre-snap movement. He would be a tremendous fit and we would get a step closer to becoming 2017 ohio state pro edition.
-
I would love this draft to become true. Jones and Samuel are two of my favourite prospects this year and snagging them both would be amazing.
IMO Jones is a top15 player all day long but his draft is stacked at DL so it isn't impossible.
The hip fexibility he shows on inside moves is incredible, if any guard is tasked to 1v1 him and jones gets some space to work he is unstoppable. This is going to need some scheming by our line D-coaches but we were pretty good at it this year. It is rare to find somebody that has his agility while still having enough strength to play inside.
Deebo was one of my favourite college players 2 years ago and i hoped he would declare and we could snag him later in the draft but he stayed and solidified himself as the best senior wr by far and also my personal top wr. His step cadence is excellent and it allows him to react whatever happens in front of him instantly making him very dangerous after the catch. But you can also see it in his routes. Because of it he is able to modify his routes to fit the sticks very well, which is a trait i love in wrs and 3d down play is so crucial in the NFL. Was pleasently surprised by his senior bowl measurements too, Big hands and well over 200 pounds sounds great.
Mullen has ver good upside, while i don't really like his tape every DB will love to use him as their coaching canvas.
Haven't watched the safety but the last 4 safety drafts have all been very strong and i feel bad for any FA Safety looking for great deals. The overcrowded market is just death for lots of veterans.
Liked Collier at the seniorbowl and he could be a gould backup guy
Hurd has nice upside and Ballard has shown that he isn't scared to take players with injury woes (Hooker and Lewis f.e.) so i could see a pick like hime being true
I love late-round special teams LBs. They just seem like the best late-round value you can get in the draft to me

we could actually get something from mack in a trade rather than just park him on the bench, thats why i entertained the question
he would be a good back up, but so would hines and hes a better receiver too
Getting multiple RBs on the field isn't hard and we did with hines and mack. Bell can essentially even play as a slot. So between 2 back sets, some end around/ jets and bell running routes from the slot, Mack will find plenty of snaps even behind Bell.

Agree to disagree. I don't see us spending a lot of dollars on FA this year. That money will be used to solidify our own FA in the future..."keeping our own players" I've heard Ballard use a couple of times... Don't get me wrong, I think if those specific pieces are out there, he will pursue them...but I believe he will only pull the trigger to complete the team at the right price / at the right time... 2020... Best guess... We are just ahead of his curve / spoiled with last years draft class.
Most of Ballards guys are the ones he picked(obv.) and they are on rookie contracts for another 3 years mostly, so my train of thought is that we can sign guys this year and maybe the next and have their contracts be economically endable when guys like hooker, nelson or leonard will command new ones. Going for expensive guys in 2020 will be problematic with giving the the 18 class new contracts because i doubt many top FAs are going to sign 2 year contracts.

We have the most capspace and lots of rookie contracts for the next 2 years, so moneywise i would happily do that.
Free Agents in general always going to have question marks, whether it's age, off-field stuff or spotty production, else they would have not become free agents and teams would have made caproom for them.
Essentially FA is like the draft and you got to roll the dice if you want to be successful and the colts aren't going to be in a better spot cap wise for the next 10 years hopefully, so yeah go for it.

I don't think that there is ever going to be a "generational" position group going into the draft because underclassmen are staying an extra year in school if they are too many good prospects in a class. In 2017 we had the same talks about the generational rb class and because of that we had guys like michel, chubb and penny staying in college. Now the 17 rb class is considered really good but without these guys it didn't become generational.
Davis and Brown, who are both top 15 players, want to make that jump to q. williams and ed oliver territory, so losing two potential all-pro will always be a big hit on a draft class.
To make a class generational you really need the unknown guys that get picked on day 3 and become long time franchise players and that's something you can only find years after the draft took place.

Edelman is a system player. Last time his contract expired they let him test FA and he re-signed once he saw how low other teams were on him. Edelman is overrated. Remember that once upon a time everyone wanted to find the next Wes Welker.
I wouldn't call him a system player. IMO he is one of the most technically sound players in the league, especially when it comes to his footwork. You won't see him misstep or having to waste time regathering his balance or do unnecessary fakes during routes. He understands better than most that it's not about getting open but about getting open fast and being ready to catch the ball the moment the qb looks at you. He doesn't allow CBs to regain position and that makes him dangerous.
For FA you have to look from the viewpoint of coaches. When they see Edelmann they see a guy whose athletic profile is easy to get via draft or udfa and they feel that don't need to spend top dollar on a technique guy because they are good coaches and will coach the pick or udfa to Edelmanns level.
Top FA is, like the top of the draft, all about potential

I would love to get williams in FA but i have the fear that he is gonna creep up closer to sammy watkins money. I definately think he is going to get more than moncrief.
With him getting possibly 12 million a year and a decent amount of that guaranteed, he might be more expensive than what ballard is willing to give him.
If I had to bet, I would put money on Humphries because he fits age-wise into the rest of the team. He should be 3 million cheaper than Williams. He has the good 2nd option/depth-guy production that ballard has liked in other FA, like autry, and i think to remember that there was some news that the colts were moving their feelers towards before he got 2nd round tendered.
-
I would be pretty happy if our draft was close to your mock.
Wilkins and the rest of the DL guys are going to be impacted a lot by the combine and pro-day numbers like it's common with DL/EDGE. He could got top 15 or we may have the chance to get him. Would be another "boring" pick after nelson this year but probably will be smartest choice.
I really like Adderly as a player(i think he has late first potential) but the safety position has been flooded with good and skilled players. The S free-agency is most likely going to be most talented out of all the positions and the draft also will bring multiple good ones. The drop-off between adderley and a safety in the third(f.e. abram from miss. state) or a good free-agent( who will not be that expensive relative to other positions) makes me dislike picking a S top of the second.
I agrre with most of the other people hear that ya-sin is a bit early in the second.
Now Renfrow, i think, is a really nice scheme fit in our passing game. He has good reaction time during the snap of the ball. He does a little dip of the shoulder which surprisingly gets him off press cov. quite often( or forced some holds by cbs). He runs all of the short and intermediate routes well. He also understands how much fakes you should put in a route so that you don't make your QB wait a quarter second longer than it's needed( really not a fan of Thielen because he wastes so much time doing dumb fakes in his routes). And although he has tiny hands he catches everything especially on third-down.
That makes him a great fit in franks quick hit offense and with a qb like luck who does lots of 3rd down magic renfrow might be the white tiger for lucks siegfried&roy.
The pats who run a similar passing scheme are also sitting close behind us and i think they also have their eyes on him so 3rd round might be spot we have to get him.
Brailford had a nice senior bowl and might rise higher than that after combine or pro-day but if we get him he has that motor that i love in d-line guys.
The rest of the picks might go a round or 2 earlier but who the # knows where players go on day 3. It's total needle and hay at that point.

That’s a fair argument if your point is that you think Ferguson and Sweat are better players than the WRs or other positions that will be there. That’s an honest opinion.
My only question is what if they’re gone? Say Q. Williams, Josh Allen, Bosa, Polite, Burns, Gary, Ferguson, Sweat, Wilkins, and Simmons are all gone at 26? Who do you draft?
All we do is make assumptions about how the draft is gonna go until the draft actually happens. Because the DL class is strong this year we are gonna have an increased chance of it being the top remaining player on the colts bigboard if there are no unusual runs on positions.
If there is an unusual run on DL and 15 DL are taken before us you have to assume we are going to take a diffrent position, but there could be very well also a run on o-line, Lbs or CBs.
You are singeling out one possible outcome out of dozens, which just doesn't seem that likely.

So it looks like this is another cleverly disguised “Don’t take a WR in the 1st. Defense Only!!!” Thread.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s not smart drafting to commit to only drafting certain positions in certain rounds. Basically YOU DONT DRAFT FOR NEED. With the exception of punters and kickers, every position has value in every round. I don’t think a lot of posters here really understand what “deep” means when it comes to a position group in the draft.
There is a good chance we will have a choice for a good talent and a good fit at DL this year at pick 26. You typically don't have that at 2.2 where the talent or the fit might be gone. I don't see the level of talent and a good fit at other positions in the draft in the late first.

The pats did exactly what we should've did against the chiefs....press coverage and blitz the qb and run the ball alot
We blitzed mahomes a ton too although mostly from the slot and running the ball alot is pretty wide range term. I really liked the pats approch to the run game. They saw us trying to run the heavy pull and reach-block and trap and wham type plays and how the chiefs just had a great gameplan for us finding our reach-blocks and attacking that aggressively and getting into the backfield. So the Pats went 180 and brought gap run through the middle with lots of FB and TE in the backfield or dives from 5-wide. Rarely did one of their o-line try to move horizontally and it showed that the chiefs weren't strong enough up front to hold them.
In the end i think the loss was 100% on the offense since we held them to 31 the same the pats did. That's just how much a great O like the chiefs are gonna score on you.
Our O gameplan and more so the o-line gameplan just was worse than the chiefs d-line gameplan

For me the top of the draft is a lot more offensive heavy than what ive seen in the thread.
I'd go:
1.Chase Young
2.Joe Burrow
3.Ceedee Lamb
4.Jeff Okudah
5.Jerry Jeudy
6.Isaiah Simmons
7. Tua
8.Mekhi Becton
9.Henry Ruggs
10:Derrick Brown
