  1. Is it true that under the new CBA a team can defer two contracts of dead money to the next year? I read that somewhere recently but don't remember the source. If that's the case, I wonder if the Colts would do that with Manning's hit and one other player if it won't create more problems in 2013.

  2. You can add Jamaal Anderson (to the Bengals) to the list of unrestricted free agents that the Colts have lost - they are the only ones that are factored in when the league decides on the compenstion picks, not players released - for a total of 9 lost and five signed. I don't think that Reggie counts because he was one of our players but I could be wrong. I won't be surprised if we sign one or two more players - maybe a TE and a D-line - but once the dust settles I would expect the Colts to receive three or four picks next year based on the value of the contracts and the anticipated performance of the players we've lost.

  3. Whether you're looking short term or long-term, RGIII will always be the better athlete and his quarterbacking skills may catch up with Luck's at some point but I don't think anyone would disagree that Luck is the much more ready to start and handle a pro-system quarterbacl than RGIII. Three years as a starter in a pro-style system with a former NFL quarterback as your head coach is pretty good resume. I also think that whoever drafts RGIII would, like the Panthers with Newton, will likely have to modify their playbook until he gets more experience. Unless Luck sucks tomorrow, he'll be the number one pick.

  4. Anderson is 6-6, 289. Maybe he doesn't have as much bulk as some 3-4 DEs but he's strong against the run. But you may be right and the new staff decides he isn't what they're looking for and cut him. Regarding Freeney versus Mathis playing up, Mathis really is built much more like a LB and Freeney like a DE. While both are exceptionally fast in getting to the QB, my impression based on watching a lot of games over the past several years is that Mathis is more athletic and agile and would have an easier transition to LB. If Anderson is too small for the 3-4 DE, then both Freeney and Mathis a way too small.

  5. Redding would be a solid addition as a 3-4 DE and I think that Jamaal Anderson could play the other end and then slide inside when they go to a 4-3. Where does this leave Mathis? Like Suggs with the Ravens, he'll play up in the 3-4, which fits him much more than Freeney, and he'll put his hand on the ground from the left side when they go to the 4-3. So they need a nose tackle (FA, middle round draft pick, or maybe Antonia Johnson can add 15 pounds and get up around 325?) and another pass rushing end (maybe Hughes?). Moala, Brayton and others can provide depth.

  6. I'm not so sure if it's about which team would be best fit be for Manning but rather that any team interested in him faces a similar dilemma as the Colts. If your not sure if his arm is 100 percent, or when that will be, or whether it will hold up for an entire season - some 500 plus regular season throws, pre-season, plus regular season practices, you need to hava plan B - another quarterback - ready to go. At least the Colts have the option of drafting either Luck or Griffin.

  7. Regarding Manusky, everyone knows he wasn't Pagano's first choice but I've got to believe that Chuck talked to his brother John, who coached with Manusky for a couple of years, and that John gave him an honest assessment of Manusky's coaching abilities, and that based on that assessment, along with input from other coaches or players who know Manusky, Chuck decided that Manusky would be a good choice for the DC position.

  8. Tressel is NOT the man for the QB job for all of the above reasons. How about John Shoop? He has been the UNC offensive coordinator the past few years (maybe that's why Irsay's jet went to Raleigh), he has both QB and offensive coordinator experience on the pro level and he and Pagano were on same Butch Davis staff at UNC in 2007.
