  1. This may sound radical and I have not really heard anyone mention this as a possibility, but if Manning is healthy and the Colts indeed select Luck, could anyone else fathom the idea of trading or cutting Freeney and not resigning Mathis? That will give the Colts somewhere around 35-40 million to resign players, pursue free agents, and sign rookies. That's all before reworking Manning, Clarke, Addai. The idea is to keep the offense the same, but create more balance on defense. Pagano can focus on the D,Manusky on developing the players, Arians to develop Luck, and Manning to run the offense.

We would have absolutely no pass rush. I think we need at least one on the team. The census says that Mathis would transition better for the 3-4 but who knows..

  2. From the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He did have a solid season, but that could be from having another really good DE line up on the other side. If I'm not making a mistake, Newton was on the team before

Yeah, Newton was on the team...

Newton, 5-10, 197 pounds, was originally signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2010. He competed in 12 games on special teams and as a reserve defensive back. Newton finished the season with six special teams tackles and contributed with one fumble recovery against Cincinnati (11/14). He missed the 2011 campaign and was placed on the Colts’ Waived/Injured list on August 28.

  3. Former Colts president Bill Polian disputes this week's reports that Peyton Manning doesn't current possess NFL-caliber arm strength.

Polian labeled the reports "untrue," adding that Manning showed "quick release, good zip, but it was capped at about 25 yards" in a New Year's Even throwing session. Polian insists Manning has been showing progress and that "his range of motion between his right arm and his left arm are almost the same at this point."
  4. Former Titans LB Keith Bulluck, a long-time friend of Dwight Freeney, says the veteran Colts star has no intention of converting to outside linebacker in the new coach Chuck Pagano's 3-4 defense.

"Dwight's thinking is, he ain't standing up," Bulluck said. "Dwight's had his hand in the (ground) for 11 years." The Colts can save $14 million of Freeney's more than $19 million against the cap by releasing him, but Freeney doesn't expect that to happen. Keeping the Pro Bowl pass rusher on the roster at that rate would be like decking out a jalopy with a Rolls Royce hood ornament.
  5. Found this on rotoworld...

The Chargers defense fell off after replacing Ron Rivera with Manusky while the 49ers defense surged to elite status after moving on from Manusky. According to the Union-Trib San Diego, "many in the organization, including several players, had been convinced for some time that hiring Manusky was a mistake."

  6. XTRA 910 Arizona's Mike Jurecki reports former Steelers OC Bruce Arians is expected to accept the same position in Indianapolis.

Jurecki likely has the news because Arians was under consideration to be the Cardinals QBs coach. A notoriously pass-first play-caller, Arians would be an intriguing mentor for presumptive No. 1 pick Stanford QB Andrew Luck. Coincidentally, rumors surfaced Saturday that former Colts coach Jim Caldwell was meeting with Steelers coach Mike Tomlin with regards to replacing Arians.
