What about Danny Trevathan, Trumaine Johnson, Jeff Allen in free agency???

Would love to get them all but only at the right price. Trevathan might be to expensive, but I feel we could probably get Johnson and Allen at favorable prices. I agree with Defjamz26 we have to get better at drafting and developing, and getting cheap free agents that mix well with what we are doing, so that we get the most out of our money. We have hit on some guys in the draft, some even in the late rounds. But we have to make some strides in development of our young players.

I really hope we shore up the o-line, injury bug is major problem almost every year. Would be nice to have some talent in the bank. Sounds like the quality of the defense is pretty high this year(draft). Can probably get some good, athletic talent in the later rounds.

But by your same point, there is a very deep class of OL, We could go OLB, ILB, DL, or DB in the first and still have plenty of rounds to pick up more than one quality OL. We could go center in the 2ND and get a G in the 3RD.

Possibly. I'd have Lawson all day long as our first round OLB.

In the context of this thread and our system though they're definitely not defensive linemen

I agree that at least one of them will probably be a OLB, but they are definitely being looked at with both positions in mind. 43 DE and 34 OLB.  I personally like both of them but don't know if I would spend a 1ST round pick on either, maybe if we traded back toward the end of the 1ST. I think Dodd is very good, but could have helped himself by going back to Clemson and establishing himself as a sure fire 1ST rounder. Lawson is already a solid 1ST, but has had a little problem with his knee. That may or may not stop him from being picked before the 2ND.

  4. First off I believe Calhoun would probably be OLB in a 3-4 and DE in a 4-3. Butler has good burst off the snap, and Rankins has a really good pass rush for a DT. Robinson is a beast and could probably play every position on a 3-4 front. Nkemdiche would be a top 10 pick if not for some off the field buffoonery. Washington(Ohio St.) is really good some games and so so in others. If he can find consistency he will be a force in the pros. Robinson, Butler, Reed, and Billings could play DT/NT. So not only are these guys good at their position most of them can play multiple positions which IMO makes them even more valuable.

I like Conklin better. But neither should be our 1st round pick. If we go OL in the first I swear I would take Cody Whitehair. I think Whitehair will be an all pro type guard and he's a very safe pick IMO. A lot of people may disagree, but I think we need to bring in a Center and a Guard and let Reitz and good battle it out for the starting RT spot. Or I wouldn't mind drafting a Rackle in the 4th to compete with those 2. The more competition for a spot, the better chance in one of those guys really shinning right? But IMO we should fix the OL in free agency and go all D with our first 3 picks.

I like Whitehair also, but we very easily could get him or another very good guard in round 3, possibly even round 4 depending how the draft plays out. It seems this year offensive and defensive lineman are the two stacked category's, so I could definitely see some quality guards like Tretola, Garnett, and Turner falling there. Also you have tackles that are very well suited to be guards in the NFL, Beavers, Ifedi, etc., that will possibly go in those rounds.

He and Geathers would be a dominant duo IMO. And we need to go back to a traditional FS, SS too. Joseph would give us that ball hawking center fielder that great defenses need, while Geathers would be our enforcer and play the run well. And both are violent hitters so that's the icing on the cake for me.

I agree I don't like the interchangeable safety approach. I also love a hard hitter at safety, so two would be great.

Yet, after losing Edge the colts won the super bowl the very next year behind the running of Addai and a journeyman RB.

Not saying that I want Zeke, but Addai was also a first round pick. He was taken 30th overall and Edge was 4th overall. So IMO Zeke is well worth the spot at 18, he is a very talented player that probably shouldn't even fall to us. I wouldn't be very upset if we got him, but I too would rather draft defensive talent especially in the first.

they have 2 mock drafters and they each had the Colts going defense.

One was Sheldon Rankins and the other was Derron Lee--OLB from Ohio State

now I'd be all for Rankins at 18 but I actually don't know too much about Lee

Does anyone have any info on him?

Here is a scouting report on him from Landry football.

    https://landryfootball.com/draft-scouting-report-on-ohio-state-linebacker-darron-lee/

We are pleased to provide you a scouting report written by Michael Jasinski, a very successful college coach in Illinois who has over 7 years of coaching experience at the high school and collegiate level, and who is developing a very fine scouting career that is catching the eye of NFL clubs. Today, he breaks down the Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee.

    Linebacker Prospect Evaluation
    Player: Darron Lee
    Size: 6’2” 235 lbs.
    School: Ohio State University
    Position: LB
    Number: 43
Films: (2015 Ohio St. vs. Alabama {National Semifinal}-2015 Ohio St. vs. Oregon {National Title Game})

    Strong Points:

This player was a Freshman All-American and made a huge impact for the 2014 buckeyes. He has played predominantly in a 4-3 defense as an OLB, but has also shown an ability to play in a 3-4 defense that OSU utilizes against spread teams as well as in their blitz packages. In OSU’s 4-3 scheme this player will always line up to the field and be asked to play in space. He is the conflict player in the Run/Pass/Option game and plays this role well. His speed and athleticism allow him to play as an apexed LB and cover both run and pass. In the 3-4 scheme he will be used on the outside and is often the blitzer in their zone blitz game. He will kick inside in their nickel package and be used as an interior blitzer with different looping stunts. His athleticism jumps out, as he is a sudden and explosive athlete. He made multiple blow up plays on the edge with perimeter runs and bubbles. He has a bag of tricks that enable him to be unblocked in space. He is able to chase down inside out and make sure tackles on the edge. He is a very competent blitzer that can take the edge as well being very adept on twists and loops. He has extremely loose hips that make him tough to block when blitzing. Looks comfortable in coverage and is often the flat player to the field. Made a great tip on a seam route against Oregon on a zone blitz. He has good stamina as he rarely comes off of the field and gives consistent effort during the game. He is a 3 down LB.

    Weak Points:

He looks a bit undersized and does not look to be the weight that he is listed at. He is light in his backside and legs and it does not look like he could carry much more weight without sacrificing speed. He has already put on 30 lbs. since being at OSU. He is a different LB when playing in the box. He does not have the girth to engage and displace OL. He looks lost at times in the box as he lacks some awareness in that area. He is more of a hitter than wrapper at this point. He was the nail and not the hammer on a couple of occasions against bigger RB’s when he did not bring his feet on contact. He can play out of control on the edge and miss tackles by not breaking down. He has a tendency to dip his head looking for blow up shots especially around the QB. Must play smarter and keep the crown of his hat out of the action.

    Special Teams:

This player should make a huge impact on special teams with his ability to tackle and avoid blocks. From day 1 this player should be a terror on KO as well as KOR where his lateral quickness will be vital. He also might have enough quick twitch in him to get the edge on Extra Pt. Block. He will make a special teams coach happy at the next level.

    Summation:

This player is a top-level athlete for his position that utilizes that athleticism to make game changing, impactful plays. He is flat out too aggressive and elusive to block on the perimeter and to quick and sudden for OL to get to at the 2nd level. He has good blitz and coverage skills that will only improve with more experience. His size is never going to be ideal and there doesn’t appear to be a lot more room for growth without impacting his speed and agility. He has to stay within himself and become more of a sound tackler and make sure he comes to balance upon impact and drive through the contact.

    Projection:

I see this player being a mid to late first round selection based on his film as a redshirt freshman. His athleticism is rare and having the ability to cover and get home in passing situations is very rare. Be it 3-4 or 4-3, he will be best suited in a defense where he can play in space and disrupt. With another big year, this player could have a big decision after next season.

  9.  Great scouting report Superman. I do still think Smith will be taken in the middle of the first round, there are a few teams there that I think could wait for him to be ready to play by the middle of the season. If Dr's think he will be out all season, then he will drop. I would be ok with Jack(who I don't think will be there) or Smith(if Dr's think he will play in 2016). Our new DC is know for his work in developing LB talent, so I'm sure he could round either into a very good players.

  10. I think Kelly and Martin will probably be there in the second round, and a few more that we could get in later rounds. I thought there are a couple of very good natural guards also, Tretola and Garnett come to mind. Then there are a few T's, Whitehair, Willie Beavers, Vadal Alexander, and Jerald Hawkins I believe could provide us with even more versatility by playing RT and RG. I believe this is a fairly good draft for OL and we will get some good talent in the early to middle rounds.

  11. I would cut Cole, and try to restructure DQ and AJ, if they didn't want to I would cut them. The rest I would keep. I also would eventually cut one of the OC, probably Harrison because it looks like we are shifting to a zone blocking scheme. Which I don't believe he would fit well in.

  12. No way on Clady. Castanzo had some bad games last year, but he owned up to it and worked through it, and I think he will work hard in the off season and training camp to get back to playing at an elite level. Keep the Left side of the line intact, get a C and T that can play G in rounds two through four, and then maybe another G or T late. While this is a very good year for DL, there will also be some really good quality OL through rounds three and four.

  13. I agree UK, but I would rather it be another experienced CB, like the other three you named. I am not really big on a corner in the first round, but I do like Maurice Canady in the later rounds and feel he is going to be good as a press corner in the NFL. So if we are able to get Claiborne on a short cheap deal, like say 2 years $2 million dollar range, that gives us another year or two  to see what we have in D'joun Smith. Then if Smith doesn't develope we can add someone early in the draft in 17' or 18'.
