  1. One small adjustment to your drafts, which I love and would be happy with both scenarios, but we do not have a 5th round pick.

This is a close one, but I'm gonna have to give the nod to scenario 2.  That looks more like my kind of draft, fills all our needs and sets up the defense well for years.  After the senior bowl I've gone back and watched several games from Trufant and I've gotta say he's now my favorite corner in the draft.

I'm in agreement with you on Williams, his 27 career sacks at the DT position is unreal.  Mathieu I believe has turned a corner and if he's available in the 5th round I think we have to take him, like you said the perfect nickel coner.  As far as Bond goes I've been on board with him as a late round selection since my first mock draft, I think he has plenty of potential and really could do no harm as a late round pick.  Ever since Cyprien has burst onto the scene at the senior bowl I have been paying very close attention to him, I love the way he likes to hit and is more than willing to come into the box and help out.

Overall my favorite 2 picks have to be Trufant and Cyprien, but I love the draft from top to bottom.

  2. Only way I see Porter fitting in this defense is playing the Mathis/Hughes role, he is not an elite pass rusher at this stage and way overrated by some, for my money if Brandon Jenkins is there in the 3rd I snatch him up but IF he is healthy he could easily be a first round pick and the best pass rusher in the draft

Thats what Porter would be playing currently as he learns from Mathis and Spencer.  But I will agree with you, you could exchange Porter for Jenkins and vice versa and I would be just as happy.

  3. Honestly, not a fan. I'd prefer Tharold Simon in the 3rd over Desmond Trufant in the 2nd. We need a good, young OT and the Vikes are not gonna let Phil Loadholt leave. Cyprien might climb the ladder in the 3rd, but I'd prefer a guy like either Philip Thomas or DJ Swearinger over Cyprien. Sean Porter is extremely undersized. Goodman is a good pick, I'll give you that. Not a fan of Bond, he's like Justin Anderson, the guy we got last year, he's prime asset is his size. Other than that, not very valuable. Keenan Davis is a good selection.

The Colts don't need just average help at cornerback, I understand he's tall and played in the SEC, but overall he's just slightly above average in my opinion.  Trufant is emerging as a top talent at cornerback and would be a difference maker, I'd be much more willing to spend high on a cornerback than wait til the mid rounds to draft a more average talent.  I do like Thomas and Swearinger as well, I just like Cyprien better.  He showed teams what he could do at the senior bowl and to be honest i think the Colts would be lucky to have him in the third.  And I don't know about your assessment of Porter being extremely undersized, is he undersized yes, but not by a lot.  He is like the new wave of hybrid LB coming into the league, he can rush the passer and is fast enough to cover the TE's in there routes, which I'm not sure if you saw this year but was one of the Colts biggest weakness on defense this year.

But thanks for the comments, I just disagree with some of them.  Overall I think this draft and offseason would fill the majority of the Colts needs and continue to leave us flexible with our cap situation, which will be important to us when our young offense comes off of all there rookie contracts.

  4. So heading into the 2013 NFL season these are the acquisitions I'd like to see the Colts make (in order of preference):

    1.  Louis Vasquez, OG, Chargers

    2.  Anthony Spencer, OLB, Cowboys

    3.  Geoff Schwartz, OG, Vikings (thank you Peytonator for posting about him)

    4.  Phil Loadholt, RT, Vikings

Ok and now the draft, I think if at all possible the Colts could get good value if they trade down into the second round, so I'm going to assume trading into the early 2nd and also recieving a 3rd and a 5th:

    ROUND 2:

       - Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington - Had a great senior bowl and I think could be a great #2 CB.

    ROUND 3:

       - John Cyprien, S, Florida International (thank you Nobody for bringing him up) - Also had a great senior bowl and the word coming from this week is that he has natural leadership qualities.  He is a hard hitter and plays under control, and I believe a great replacement for Zibikowski.

    ROUND 3:

       - Sean Porter, OLB, Texas A&M - Mathis will not be around forever and he would be good for the rotation with him and Anthony Spencer.  Porter was a difference maker when A&M was playing in a 3-4, this year his production dropped but I believe that was because the team switched to a 4-3, if he is here for this pick he makes a lot of sense for the Colts.

    ROUND 4:

       - Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas - A powerful back, but is slightly injury prone, has proven though when healthy can be a diffence maker, with the colts switching to a power running game he could be perfect to pair with Ballard and have a nice young tandem to grow with our young team.

    ROUND 5:

       - Malliciah Goodman, DE, Clemson - Powerful defensive end that can work his way into our rotation at defensive end.  Relentless worker and good at setting the edge and stopping the run.

    ROUND 6:

       - Travis Bond, OG, North Carolina - A big guard that played opposite of Cooper and had a solid year especially in the run game.  Has the potential to be a mauler and can be brought in for competition in camp and help out incase we have injuries along the line.

    ROUND 7:

       - Keenan Davis, WR, Iowa - At 6'3" 215 lbs. he is a big reciever with some potential and descent production, but where he can really help out is in the run blocking.  He is a more than willing blocker that Pep could appreciate.

  5. So I've been trying to figure out why we've been looking at am inside linebacker for a couple of days now, and I know its early in the process and were doing our due diligence, but still it seems strange that we'd spend time looking at guys at a position where we don't really have a need. But on my way home today it kinda hit me, maybe Pagano sees some Ray Lewis in him or someone like that, he knows better than any of us what a dominant middle linebacker can do. So who knows, I know the odds that were going to take him are slim and I'm fine with that. But it kinda makes a little more sense to me why Pagano would look at a position like that, especially if he doesn't think we currently have that on the team.

  6. Props to Chelsea....

I think this is one of the better mock drafts any fan has posted so far.....

I'm not a big fan of Rhodes.....   I'm not a fan of corners that big.    Too big for my taste.   I'd worry he'd eventually become a safety and if we're going to take a safety, I'd prefer not to spend a #1 on that unless it's a special player.

But,  on balance,  this is a very good mock draft....

    Well done!

Thank you, I did spend a few days on this one and tried to keep it a balanced draft.  To be honest I wouldn't mind the alternate picks for rounds 1 and 3, I like them both and think we could go defensive end or olb in the first and corner in the third.  Whatever happens this offseasons I'll be fine with, but this is a really fun time of year.

  7. Nice draft but I want a stud O Lineman early in the draft, Im not up for getting some bum journeymen O Line through FA, we saw how that went this year

Gavin I understand what you're saying and completely agree that we need an upgrade, but if you remember last offseason we had no money and had to do a patchwork offensive line. That's not the case this year and can afford to go get a real offensive line. So I say let us spend the money on the line and fix the defense in the draft.

  8. First of all congradulations to the Colts on a great season, I could not be more proud of what we accomplished this year.  But now on to a very fun offseason and one I'm sure there will be a lot of changes.  This is obviously based on what our needs are currently, we all have no idea what players are going to be signed this offseason, so this is all subject to change.  I am going to make one assumption, however, and that is the offensive line will be fixed through free agency, so you will not see that reflected in my draft.  So here is my current mock draft, complete with alternate picks as well:

    ROUND 1:

    • Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
      • Height/Weight:  6’2”/217 lbs.
      • Season Stats:  39 tackles, 3 INT, 7 PD
      • Strong, physical man corner to pair with Vontae next year.
    • Alternate pick:  Ezekiel Ansah, DE/OLB, BYU

    ROUND 3:

    • Brandon Jenkins, OLB, Florida State
      • Height/Weight:  6’3”/260 lbs.
      • Season Stats (2011):  41 tackles, 12 TFL, 8 sacks
      • Potential first rounder, but drops due to his injury, replacement for Freeney.
    • Alternate pick:  Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington

    ROUND 4:

    • Robert Lester, S, Alabama
      • Height/Weight:  6’2”/210 lbs.
      • Season Stats:  42 tackles, 4 INT, 3.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks
      • Steady production throughout his career, hard hitter and a great pickup in the 4th to replace Zibikowski.
    • Alternate pick:  Baccari Rambo, S, Georgia

    ROUND 6:

    • Travis Bond, OG, North Carolina
      • Height/Weight:  6’6”/345 lbs.
      • Descent guard option, brought in as depth and maybe potential starter in the future.  Could become a mauler and has a bit of a mean streak, good run blocker.
    • Alternate pick:  Bruce Taylor, ILB, Virginia Tech

    ROUND 6 (compensation):

    • Brandon Williams, DT, Southern Missouri State (Div II)
      • Height/Weight:  6’2”/330 lbs.
      • Season Stats:  68 tackles, 16.5 TFL, 8.5 sacks, 5 FF
      • This is my sneaky good pick late in the draft and I’d be willing to take a flyer on this guy. I understand his competition is division II, but that kind of production is hard to argue with, and he has been solid throughout his college career (27 career sacks).
    • Alternate pick:  Montori Hughes, DT, Tennessee Martin

    ROUND 7:

    • Joe Kruger, DE, Utah
      • Height/Weight:  6’7”/270 lbs.
      • Season Stats:  30 tackles, 8 TFL, 1 INT, 6 sacks, 2 FF
      • A little on the lite side for a defensive end in the 3-4, but could add bulk.  His height could be an advantage at being able to get up and swat down balls and can set the edge well.
    • Alternate pick:  Dan Giordano, DE/OLB, Cincinnati
  9. Not bad but I would go with a OL instead of Matheau

I agree we need OL help (desperatly, I might add), but like i said in my OP I believe the Colts will address that in free agency. Our secondary though is drastically missing a playmaker, and if Mathieu is still there in the 5th I think taking a flyer on a potentially huge playmaker would be great value at that pick. Remember he not only could make plays on defense, he also made plays as a returner.

  10. Ok so this is my first topic ever made, wanna give this a shot and see what you guys think.

First off, I believe the colts will fix the offensive line in free agency, so you will not see that reflected in my draft. Second, for my mocks' purpose I'm going to say the Colts will be picking 22nd in the draft.

ROUND 1 (Pick 22): Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU

    - Honestly I'm surprised this guy hasn't started being brought up more, he's sliding a bit (kiper has him down to 16th on his board), the colts would have to be a little bit lucky to see him fall to us, but with the amount of defensive line talent on the board this year I would not be surprised to see him fall to us. He would be perfect to pair with Mathis and continue our transition to the 3-4.

ROUND 3 (Pick 86): Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington

    - A solid all around CB with good cover skills, could be a good fit for us as the number 2 CB. Bring him in and pair him up with Vontae and lets see what they can do.

ROUND 4 (Pick 118): Robert Lester, S, Alabama

    - Zibikowski is not the answer for us in the secondary, more of just a stop gap. The colts I believe could look for a safety earlier in the draft, but with us having other needs this seems like the right round to grab one. Lester has had solid production the past 3 years and he continues to get better and has had 14 interceptions over those 3 years, so he has a nose for the ball, and we all know how much we would love if the colts could force a few more turnovers on defense.

ROUND 5 (Pick 150): Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU

    - With the recent news of him entering the draft this year, I started to think about if the Colts should take a shot at him. I'll be the first to say I have no idea where he's going to go in the draft, but if hes around with this pick I think he would be worth a shot. No matter what you think of him, he's a playmaker and I believe could excell as our slot corner. Put him with Vontae and Trufant, and the Colts could turn one of there biggest weaknesses into a strength

Feel free to comment and let me know how I did, try not to be too harsh to me though.

  11. Guys I think its time to start realizing that these guys are both likely out of the picture and the colts will probably picking more like 15th or lower. With 4 wins on the season already and some very winable games from here on out you gotta believe the colts will have a minimum of 7 wins (kansas city, "maurice jones drewless" jacksonville, tennessee at home, and a 17th week texans team, plus with the way the Colts are playing you just can't really count them out of any game). With that said I believe the colts will be looking to shore up the middle of the offensive line with the range we are picking in.

    Castanzo

    Reitz

    Shipley or Satele

    Warmack

    Justice or Ijalana

Doesn't look that bad on paper and I'm sure the line will get better through free agency as well.

  12. ROUND 1:

    Andrew Luck, QB Stanford

    ROUND 2:

    Coby Fleener, TE Stanford

    Alshon Jeffery, WR South Carolina

    Stephen Hill, WR Georgia Tech

    Kendall Wright, WR Baylor

    Kevin Zeitler, OG Wisconsin

    Peter Konz, OG/C Wisconsin

    Stephon Gilmore, DB South Carolina

    Janoris Jenkins, CB Northern Alabama

    ROUND 3:

    A.J. Jenkins, WR Illinois

    Brian Quick, WR Appalachian St.

    Dwayne Allen, TE Clemson

    Orson Charles, TE Georgia

    Brandon Boykin, CB Georgia

    Casey Hayward, CB Vanderbuilt

    Jayron Hosley, CB Virginia Tech

    Jamell Flemming, CB Oklahoma

    Alameda Ta’amu, DT Washington

    Jarad Crick, DE Nebraska

    ROUND 4:

    Ladarius Green, TE Louisiana-Lafayette

    Michael Egnew, TE Missouri

    Jarius Wright, WR Arkansas

    Joe Adams, WR Arkansas

    Tommy Streeter, WR Miami

    Derek Wolfe, DT/DE Cincinnati

    Josh Chapman, DT Alabama

    Bobby Wagner, ILB Utah State

    Chase Minnifield, CB Virginia

    George Iloka, S Boise State

    ROUND 5:

    James Hanna, TE Oklahoma

    Audie Cole, ILB NC State

    Akiem Hicks, DT Regina

    Nick Jean-Baptiste, DT Baylor

    Shaun Prater, CB Iowa

    Ryan Steed, CB Furman

    ROUND 6:

    Travis Lewis, OLB Oklahoma

    Dequan Menzie, S Alabama

    Dwight Jones, WR North Carolina

Dale Moss, WR South Dakota State

    BJ Cunningham, WR Michigan St.

    Greg Childs, WR Arkansas

    ROUND 7:

    Matt Daniels, SS Duke

    Winston Guy, SS Kentucky

    Micah Pellerin, CB Hampton

    Donte Paige-moss, DE/OLB North Carolina

    Chris Owusu, WR Stanford

    Griff Whalen, WR Stanford

    Chris Rainey, RB Florida

  13. I'm starting to agree with that more and more as I do more research in the draft. Now if Fleener were there at 34 I think it will be very hard for the FO to pass him up. I personally do not see him falling that far in the draft anyways, and am now heavily in favor of Jeffery. If he grows up and stays motivated he will be an absolute steal at 34.

  14. I'm not sure all those picks will be there where you slotted them, but if the draft plays out this way I would be ecstatic, that's a solid draft. I'll finish the draft for you

    7. Rishaw Johnson, G California (PA) - we need depth at guard

    7. Micah Pellerin, CB Hampton - I have been very high on this guy for awhile, I'm glad to see he's finally getting his due on here

    7. Shawn Loiseau, ILB Merrimack - Very tough ILB and could use some depth at the position
