From what I read the market for him is up to 6m AAV, so I would say close to Arthur Jones money.

There are a lot of people saying there is no downside to this guy if we sign him. If he does good, great. If he does bad, cut him and move on. The problem is that we could sign him and Grigson may think highly enough of him that he could pass up a WR that might fall in the NFL Draft and instead reach on a different position of need. This is worst case scenario where the fallen WR (a kevin white or devante parker possibly) goes on to become the next reggie wayne, and we get a 1st round bust along with duron carter who gets cut because he isn't good enough or has attitude problems, etc... If we go with Duron Carter, I still hope we at least draft a WR at bare minimum, and I wouldn't be opposed to taking one as high as the first three rounds. Hopefully Grigson's opinion isn't extremely high of Carter, it could have a domino effect that burns us.
Alternatively, we fail to match his contract of something like 200k guaranteed because Grigson isn't very high on him and instead Grigson blows a first round pick and millions in guarantees on the next Heyward-Bey. All the while the word out of the CFL that Carter has matured proves true and he turns into the Cameron Wake of wide receivers and becomes a legitimate #1 WR with size and speed and we missed out on him all because Grigson was to enamored with drafting someone.
The fact is Grigson and the scouting department will grade him like any other WR and base picking him or any other player on need and perceived value. Cost vs return.

With our poor o-line do we really want/need a player who could get squashed so easily? I think we should stick with a power back.
Alternatively do you want a guy who can't make people miss and will turn the -1 to 1 yard runs the line will give him in to 1-4 yard runs by falling forward, or do you want a guy who can make people miss with shiftiness and speed and turn them in to 10 yard runs 1/5 times. Plus he'll add a major threat in the check down game that we have seen could be a big weapon.
If Duke works out LB's won't be able to cover him and when safeties have to come down that's going to open up deep throws for TY and Moncrief.
-
Love this guy for us in the 2nd.
Would love to see him as Luck's check down target, Boom showed just how effective it was in the playoffs and Duke would bring it to another level.
His size would definitely mean a few stuffs (we're used to that) but he has the home run potential to break one that we haven't really had since....?
-
Not just because he's a FA, but because of the money. We can try and say "we'll have plenty of cap room", but no one really knows. Probably better just to draft a guy and bide your time. McCourty's contract might mean in the long run you have to let go of a guy like Fleener, or may not be able to pay a guy like Castonzo. You have to throw Luck's contract into the mix too.
I just feel the Colts are in a position where they can't afford to sign a top FA.
We have 69m on the book for 2016 and if you include the next two drafts your talking about 85m. Cuts like RJF, Landry, and if they don't work out D'Q Jackson and Cherlius means we're talking about ~60m on the book and a cap of 150m.
Grigson takes grief rightfully so but we are set up fine for the 2012 draft class contracts as well as a couple FA pickups
-
I only think you cut him if you plan to find an upgrade in the draft or FA. He's not worth what he's getting paid but he's better than just about every other player on the DL right now.
The way we are set up going into 2016 I don't think we'll have any trouble fitting in contracts for 2012 signings.
-
I like you free agency. The only thing I would be concerned with is not bringing in a edge rusher.
I'm interested to see what Newsome can do before we invest heavily there, that and if Mathis can come back at even 50% would be great.
If we get a guy like Knighton or Williams to go with Jones I expect a lot more collapsed pockets too.
Don't think we'll be courting McCourty (pun intended). You have to get young at the safety position. We've had nothing but FAs starting there for too long. Brown, Adams, Landry, and Howell was an UDFA and Bethea was from the Polian era. I know McCourty isn't really old, but you can't keep putting FAs there.
I have different ideas of how the team should draft though.
For me Mccortry solve 1 of 2 positions for 3+ years. Yes we'll need someone to replace Adams soon but Mccourtry gives us time to see if Howell or Brown can handle it otherwise we look to the draft next year or so.
Good work on yours...
I would change cutting Chapman though. He still has some value and I don't see us cutting him while still under his rookie deal.
In free agency, I see the Colts signing more help at DL, and added depth at OG, S, and RB....
- Possible targets include...
DE Cedrick Thorton
NT Dan Williams
OG Orlando Franklin
S Marcus Gilchrist
S Will Hill
RB Frank Gore
2015 Draft
- Colts trade 1st for Chicago's 2, 3
- Colts trade 2, 6, 7 to NE for their 2, 4
Lot of money layed out in FA here not sure we can swing that. Also don't Thornton leaving Philly but would love him.
I'm for trading down in the draft, but too hard to know what we'd pull off so I left that idea out. Like Allen in the 4th though. Don't wanna do anything with NE except damage them hence the McCourtry move

Numbers taken from Over The Cap - not including the newly reported 3m in Trich money incase it turns out not to be true.
Cuts
Landry - 1.4m savings - Hasn't done enough to justify another year
Phillips - 2.6m savings - Didn't add anything
Chapman - .7m - Lines just not been good enough, has to be casualties
TRich - 0 - No point to keep him at this point, time to end the mistake
Thomas - 3.2m - Injuries
Ballard - .65m - Injuries
Cap Space ~47m assuming 142m Cap Next season
Resigning
Freeman - 1yr / 2.3m - 2nd rd tender, he's good depth if nothing else.
Hasselbeck / Backup QB - 2yr / 4m - Needed, shouldn't skimp too much
Reitz - 2yr / 3.7m - Key backup and has played well when called upon
Herron - 2yr / 1.3m - Good enough for top 3
Butler - 3yr / 10m - Has played well in spurts
Brown - 2yr / 3.8m - Great special teamer and decent when called upon
Adams - 1yr / 1.3m - Probowl, he's 34 so won't get much anywhere I suspect
Bradshaw - 1yr / .9m - 2 years of injuries but successful when healthy
Overton, Whalen, etc... - 2m against cap (top 51) - Filler in top 51
Remaining Cap - 33m
Free Agency
Terrance Knighton - 4yr / 18m - Run stuffer NT that Hughers / Chapman haven't been
Brian De La Puente - 2yr / 4.5m - Center / Guard better than what we have at C and RG now
Duron Carter 3yr - 3m - Big body with speed, ++ potential and will compete with Moncrief
Devin Mccoutry - 5yr / 45m - Weaken our biggest rival while upgrading a position of need = +++++ for me
Remaining Cap - 17m
Draft
1st - La'el Collins - OT/G - Brought in for RG next season, ideally develop to replace Cherlius next year if he doesn't improve
2nd - Duke Johnson - RB - We have a good offense but NE game proved it can be too one dimensional, need a running game. Fits the running back by committee scheme that we use.
3rd - Stephone Anthony - ILB - Showing strong at Senior Bowl, good size and decent in coverage
4th - Henry Anderson - 3-4 DE - Replacement for Redding, need to add something to DL somewhere in draft
5th - Imoan Claiborne - CB - Gordy replacement.
6th - Jamison Crowder - WR - Whalen competition, fills the slot position.
7th - ......No preference here
Remaining cap for carry over or inseason picks ~ 8m. Our 2016 cap situation is quite healthy so I'm not too concerned about space for Hilton, AC, Allen etc..
-
Clearly you resign him unless he wants max bucks
34 next season and wasn't signed until June this year, can't see him getting much.
Hopefully he can keep his level of play up and Howell comes back healthy to give him some competition.
-
Murray maybe available. Ballard has been hurt way too much but maybe as a backup. Boom is also good but we need a star rb. Cant imagine what he would do with someone like murray or mershawn. He needs help bad.
The draft is good but there hasnt been that much success the past few years at rb. Ap and murray are still the leaders...
I expect Boom, a mid round 3-5 draft pick, and someone cheap between Bradshaw, Gore or as mentioned Spiller to fill out the 3 RB slots heading into next year.
Too hard to say what Ballard is at this point after two seasons out so I wouldn't count on him grabbing a spot.
-
Considering we match up with the AFC East and NFC South next year plus Houston are still short a QB and Tennessee and Jacksonville are still short..... I really think we should be looking for a 12 or 13 win season. Playoffs are a crap shoot so get a bye would be my goal.
Toughest games next year
Home - Pats, Denver
Road - Steelers, Bills / Texans(?)
I honestly think this could be a 13 or 14 win season with a strong offseason and a little Andrew Luck.
-
Terrance Knighton (NT) - Everything we hoped Hughes / Chapman would be he is, combine him with Jones and we may really have something
Brian De La Puente (C/G) - Thought we should of signed him last year now we have another chance, versatile and better than anything we have at RG or C now.
Duron Carter / Eddie Royal (WR) - We need more to take the pressure off TY, I expect Moncrief to take a big step this season but still not enough.
For me that leaves OL, SS, ILB, RB as my first four picks in the draft (what round depends on value at pick).
-
Like a lot of it, not sure how the numbers would work but I would definitely look at cutting Phillips 2.6m just because he doesn't really add anything. Even then it looks like there should be decent roll over for Luck, TY, AC etc...
Big hole for me is still feel like the D-Line could use a bit more and I'm not sold on Spiller fixing anything so that would depend on the money I guess.
-
I like drafting a CB in the second round, but I think someone needs to be brought in to shore up the safety position or the secondary will suffer. That and the RB position seems risky relying on Vick off ACL surgery and TR who had his struggles.
-
Atlantic Canadian - Started with Faulk, but never became a full fledge fan until about 10 years ago. Before that just floated around with my favourite players and supported their team. Peyton / Edge / Mathis won me over.
Just saw my first live game last weekend....

Latest Incarnation:
Cut:
Satele
Cap: 41.5m (after Cut)
Resignings:
Bradshaw, Reitz, Gordy, Sergio, and Link - 5M of cap space
Vinateri - 2.75 cap space (2yr/5.5m)
Mcafee - 2.4m cap space (5 yr/12m)
Davis - 5.7m cap space (5yr/28.5m)
Cap remaining - 25.6
New Offensive Signings
De Le Puente - 5.75m cap space (4yr/23m)
Vet OG think Willie Colon or Chad Rinehart - 2m cap space (2yr/4m) - to push Thorton and Reitz
New Defensive Signings
Vet ILB thinking Daryl Smith - 1.5m cap space (2yr/3m) - provide leadership and competition to Mcnary and draft pick
Jarius Byrd - 8.8m cap space (5yr/44m)
Arthur Jones - 5m cap space (5yr/25m)
Cap remaining - 2.6m
The draft will eat up about 2.3m of that, but with a little back loading on the new contracts freeing up 3-5m is quite easy. With Redding, Mathis, and Wayne coming off big contracts in the next few years the back loading shouldn't hurt to much when resigning the likes of Hilton and Luck.
In the draft I would target (position first to hard to predict players available)
2nd - CB Desir or Joyner
3rd - ILB Smallwood, Skov, Borland, or Jones (competition for Mcnary/Smith)
5th - WR Matt Hazel
6th - DE Brent Urban
7th - OT Donald Hawkins
QB - Luck
RB - Ballard, TR, Bradshaw (That order for now, preserve Bradshaw a bit)
FB - Stanley
WR - Wayne, Hilton, Hazel / Brazil / Rogers / Whalen (good competition behind Wayne and Hilton)
TE - Allen, Fleener
OT - GC , AC
OG - Thomas, Thorton / Vet OG / Reitz (competition for starter opposite Thomas)
C - De Le Puente
CB - Davis, Toler, Butler, 2nd Rd CB / Gordy (Toler is a concern so creating depth here is important for if / when he goes down)
FS - Byrd
SS - Landry
OLB - Mathis, Werner / Walden ///// Adongo (one can hope)
ILB - Freeman, Mcnary / Vet ILB / 3rd Rd ILB (competition Mcnary seems coaches early favourite)
NT - Chapman, Hughes
DE/DT - Jones, RJF, Redding (strong rotation between those 3 with possibly Moala or vet min filling in some holes)
-
People still do not understand his role in the defense. They are still living in the Dungy 4-3 days and think our d-linemen are supposed to rush the QB. People need to read some documentation on a 3-4 2 gap defense and then maybe they'll understand how our DE's are supposed to play. RJF was a very good pickup and has played well.
The line needs upgrading and RJF is an ok player, but at 5.1 he is the easiest target to look for an upgrade. He would be great depth but at that price it just doesn't work. Arthur Jones would be a great pickup to upgrade the line is my thinking.
-
A bit drastic but
Cuts:
RJF
Toler
Satele
New Cap Space - 48.2
Signings
Brian De La Puente - 5yr/5.8m per
Jarius Byrd - 5yr/9.3m per
Arthur Jones 3/5m per
Vontae Davis - 5yr/6m per
Sam Shields - 4yr/4.5m per
Vinatieri + Mcafee - 6m per combined
Bradshaw, Sergio Brown, Gordy...other depth guys - 6.5m per combined
That leaves 5.3m to sign 2nd,3rd,5th rounder, which would leave around 3m for the season in case of trade or injury replacements.
Draft Picks (Obviously alot of this depends on other teams but the positions are where I would be looking at)
2nd - Borland, Smallwood, Or Christian Jones (Current preference in order) ILB
3rd - Donte Moncrief WR
5th - Taylor Hart DE/DT
All this talk about La' El Collins just reminded me....

Maybe if Simon showed up for workouts he could of kept a little closer to Edelman.
Still like Collins potential though, and as mentioned above this was years ago.
