  1. The Jets are very much like Denver was when he took over. Beaten down, insecure, lacking confidence. It's the kind of situation he excels at. If he gets the keys, I would expect him to give the entire team a burst of energy. For that reason alone, I wouldn't laugh his presence off as some kind of joke.

  2. One unknown factor to consider here. I was diagnosed with bowel and prostate cancer within 30 days of each other. 4 years later so far so good. But in the aftermath of treatments, you do a lot of reading about what you can do to minimize your chances of relapse. And EVERYTHING I read that I respected listed adequate rest and minimizing stress as two of the most important things you can do, along with nutrition and exercise. Not predicting or preaching, but just pointing out how much at odds his career is with those recommendations.

  3. I buy into the assumption that the Colts are committed to rebuilding a team that is more balanced in terms of offense vs defense. The first draft in this rebuilding process seemed to be a bit tilted more towards offense, for a variety of legitimate reasons, Given their stated direction, it seems reasonable to assume that next year's draft would be aimed more towards defense. And for this transaction to happen, the Colts would likely have to part with a decent chunk of that [assumed] defensive draft, PLUS possibly give up a defensive stalwart like Freeney. So that approach would appear (to me) to be more similar to the previous approach - of blue-chipping the offense and trying to put together a serviceable defense based on late-round picks and UDFAs. Not saying that's a terrible thing, but it seems like the type of approach they are trying to get away from.

  4. As one who can easily go 4 days between shaves without anyone noticing, I salute any attempt at facial hair - however misguided and pathetic it may be. Amish beards for the whole team, I say.

  5. ,

Hmm trying to get a rise out of people with that comment eh

Were it possible to separate the past from the present (it's not), I would say OJ. Watching him run through the vaunted Steel Curtain for some ridiculous yardage (275-ish?) will always stick with me. He would sort of glide for a moment, then plant a foot and blow by people, and was extremely fast in his prime.

  6. Fans come and go, just like players. The only constant in all of this is Irsay's ownership of the entity known as the Colts. I believe he wants to provide a great product that will please fans. Not please me, not please you, but please that ever-evolving, constantly changing group known as fans. I suspect if the Colts start out decently with Luck, and improve each year - their fanbase will be there. It may not include a bunch of people who were in that group yesterday, but the ones that leave will be replaced with new ones. It's just how life goes.

  7. It's a testament to Peyton's greatness that he makes extraordinary plays seem almost routine. The thing I will always remember most about him is just how funny he can be. When you watch him at work, you would probably expect him to be almost like a cyborg in person. But seeing him do the roundhouse kick to Eli's butt in the classic brothers-fighting commercial on ESPN - just floors me every time. Such a rare mix in one person.

  8. Maybe Peyton's too good for his own good? Lots of respectable people talk about how he redefined the position. He covered SO many flaws, took pressure off so many players, coaches, and FO people for so long. Imagine the Colts are a state-of-the-art high-def 3D television. Peyton's the remote. Lose the remote and you can't even watch re-runs of Maude. Suddenly a less fancy TV doesn't look so bad.

  9. Please name one significant media outlet that isn't owned by a large corporation that treats its news organization just like any other business unit. The bottom line is all that matters. If it drives revenue, it goes in. If it don't, it don't. Controversy sells, and sales drive profit. And profit has replaced prophet as almighty. Can't believe you all seem shocked by this.

  10. Ok, so let's just continue to mutate my simple statement into larger and larger claims why don't we? This thread was a discussion of how many SBs people thought PEYTON should have. I just made the point that if you only have one to hang on your wall, it would be nice if it was really memorable. it was a shame that it had to be one where Peyton's counterpart came off as Bozo the Clown, who repeatedly shot his own great team in the foot. But please, make my point whatever fits your argument, I'm cool with it. And thanks especially for the new tag name "Respected Duolian", I kind of like the sound of that. This is a nice place.

  11. A much better explanation. Still wrong but stated much better.

I don't care about the perception of the general football public. Who does? If someone belittles the Colts' accomplishment that year because of Grossman, how does that matter? It means nothing to me and I don't know why it would mean anything to fans of the Colts. History will only recognize them as the champs that year. It is like a golf scorecard - there is no dialog box to detail how you arrived at your score on a particular hole. The only thing relevant is the score itself.

I can see your point, but judging from the daily outrage on this board when someone in the national media disrespects the Colts - I'd say quite a few Colts fans care about what "outsiders" think. It's just human nature to want as many people as possible to share your high opinion of your team, and there's nothing wrong with that. Eventually, Peyton's era will ONLY exist (for most) on TV shows, just like Bart Starr only exists there for us. Fewer and fewer people who actually watched the games are around with each passing year. And I think that unfortunately, that SB - if it gets shown much - will probably be presented almost like an NFL bloopers reel. I hated Grossman for stinking up the game the way he did, I wanted an epic battle of two worthy champions. That's all I'm pushing.

And I do grant Jaric points about the AFCGG - it was epic. But the OP was about Super Bowls, so that's the road I took.

  12. Absolutely ridicuous. So the Colts Super Bowl win is undervalued because they beat a Rex Grossman QB'd team? What a bunch of nonsense. Isn't that kind of like saying you date the ugliest Playboy Playmate? She may not be as pretty as Ms. September but Ms. June is still pretty freaking good.

They can only play and beat whoever is in front of them.

Sorry, but years down the road the main thing I remember is the frequent laughing at Rex Grossman tripping over himself. Which tends to undercut the perception that it was a match worthy of two teams for the title. No fault of anyone's, just the way it turned out. I'm fully aware that you play whoever you get - but I am talking about the Colts historical legacy, and if they only end up with the single SB win during Peyton's era I think it is unfortunate that this game is what we have to put up there with all the rest. Doesn't cheapen the accomplishment, but it does cheapen the PERCEPTION of the accomplishment by the general football public (ie non-Colts diehards).

He may have had the nickname Sexy Rexy, but on your dating scale I would have to rank him somewhere Phyllis Diller and that decomposing woman Jack Nicholson was making out with in The Shining.

  13. If you're only gonna win one Super Bowl, it would be helpful to at least have it be a classic game that would enter the rotation of great moments in Super Bowl history. I really don't know that beating Rex Grossman in the pouring rain is going to qualify. The SB against the Saints certainly fits the bill, but not for Indy fans unfortunately.

  14. Imagine the pressure/motivation that Dan Orlovsky must be experiencing right now. His previous stint at QB with the only 0-16 team to date must be a huge albatross around his neck, now made larger by the "opportunity" he has been presented with by the Colts. If he fails to stop another slide to 0-16 his second time around, he is destined to suffer ridicule on every sports trivia game for all eternity.
