  1. I agree with Superman that this will become fodder for some funny posts next year at this time.... the thread that somebody recently started that looks back at what we said about last year's draft is very funny to read... I've learned my lesson: 2nd guessing the draft is pointless until some empirical data starts to come in from the field...

I like the draft... I was as surprised as everybody else to hear Thornton, Holmes, and Hughes's names called, but I'm fine with the positions selected and know for a fact that Indy's scouts knew the players better than I did...

I'm of the opinion that so many of the pundits that have been complaining that we didn't draft a corner are overreacting... I've never seen so much discontent over failing to get a guy who would most likely be 4th on the depth chart... I understand that depth was a concern there, but not nearly enough to stray from the BPA strategy and be out of synch with Grigs's draft board... Butler is a better 3rd corner than most teams have in the league...

The only move that would have made me 2nd guess the draft would have been a failure to get a guard, but that was an immediate need for 2013... a fourth corner can be gotten in UDFA much more easily than a starting caliber G (or an OLB who was the best DE in the country by a mile last season, for that matter)...

I do hope that many of my fellow Colts fans vigorously take part in this exercise because It does provide a good snapshot of what we were thinking after the draft and usually provides a perfect example of why football teams don't make personnel decisions by polling the fans...

I just did this for fun honestly.  Like I said before, I did like our draft and think that it was done very well by our front office.

  2. I thought this would be interesting to do since we would know who would be available at our picks (including trades) who would you have taken?

Round 1 Pick 24 - Xavier Rhodes CB Florida St. - Thought OLB could be addressed later on in the draft.
Round 3 Pick 86 - Hugh Thornton OG Illinois - I really liked this pick so I kept it I think he will do really well for us.
Round 4 Pick 121 - Johnathan Franklin RB UCLA - I thought he was the best back in this years draft.  Great pass protection and good speed.  3 down back.
Round 5 Pick 139 - Brandon Jenkins DE/OLB Florida St. - Was hurt and fell down the board, but I think will do well. Raw.
Round 6 Pick 192 - Cobi Hamilton WR Arkansas - I bit to lean needs to add bulk and a bit raw in route running and needs steadier hands.
Round 7 Pick 230 - Chase Thomas OLB Stanford - Surprised he is still on the board, huge steal and great depth.
Round 7 Pick 254 - Melvin White CB/S Louisiana-Lafayette - bit of a tweener, but has good size for the CB position and could play safety, would of added depth.

This is how I would of gone about our draft, but I know everyones opinions are different and I am actually pretty happy with our draft, but just wanted to see how everyone else would have drafted.

    Round 1 Pick 24 -
    Round 3 Pick 86 -
    Round 4 Pick 121 -
    Round 5 Pick 139 -
    Round 6 Pick 192 -
    Round 7 Pick 230 -
    Round 7 Pick 254 -

You can copy this template to redo your draft.
  3. The problem with getting Dansby would be that we have to very capable starters at MLB and a good backup with Freeman, Angerer, and Connor.  I don't know where he would fit in with that rotation and none of them fit really well at the OLB position.  I mean yes Dansby is probably better than all 3 of them, but I don't think it warrants us getting him as he is getting on the wrong side of 30.

Ahmad Bradshaw I wouldn't mind hes fairly young and is a 3 down back.  I'm not sure how he is in pass protection, but he is a weapon that Andrew Luck would love to have and would definitely help him in his 2nd year.  I really wish we would had picked up Johnathan Franklin out of UCLA. :(

  4. This "strategy" isn't something thats going to work immediately because we just don't have the right personnel for it, but it is something that we're more working towards the future.  Think of it like the the Steelers a couple years back.  They had a dominant front 7 that allowed like under 90 rushing yards a game, but had people like James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley that would just just the QB.

I think this is something we're trying to replicate, even the Ravens had something like this. Have good run stoppers like Lewis and Ngata and have a guy like Terrell Suggs dominate the pass rush.  And they didn't have the best of corners either, I mean yes they had guys like Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu who take away half the backfield by themselves, but I think our secondary is better than what the Steelers/Ravens secondary were a couple years ago.

A better example now days is the 49ers.  Their D-Line is nothing extremely special minus Justin Smith and guys like Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman cleaning up ball carriers and an Aldon Smith who just racks up sacks.

So I don't think it is something that is going to be successful right away, but something we're building towards.

  5. Too small in my opinion.  Pete Carrolls approach to CB I think is what the NFL is going to start going towards more bigger, more aggressive corners who may not be the fastest, but strong enough to contain them and disrupt their routes.  He is just plain to small 5'10'' and not even close to 200 he will be bullied by bigger WRs.

  6. What is everyone complaining about?  A team starts from the trenches... you think about all the best teams right now, 49ers, Ravens, Patriots, Seahawks, Broncos -- they all have great offensive lines that can protect their QB's and on the defensive side they have a stout front 7.  Your teams get better through the trenches.  If the front 7 starts dominating and getting pressure your corners look better, if your offensive line blocks really well you r RB and QB look better.  It all starts from there and thats where we're putting our focus.

Just some breaking news I guarantee that more than likely most of you don't know more than Grigson and Pagano... they see something in these guys that you don't.  I'm pretty sure they know what kind of player that is going to fit their scheme more than anyone else.  So what if they don't pan out... thats what happens in the draft, you're making an educated guess on whos going to do well.  So if they don't do well, cool you got lucky and called it right... if they do well you'll probably come back later on saying you had liked that pick all way back when.

People complaining about not taking a RB/CB/WR... you don't fix all your problems on a football team over night.  We're not going to fill in every little hole we have in one offseason.  You try to improve every year which I think we have improved this year compared to last year as a football team.  There is always next year to draft a CB or start looking for a replacement for Reggie... it is not the end of the world... calm down.  What is done is done and have faith in the coaches and front office.

  7. I don't think there is a corner worth taking in the 4th round, Quintin Patton would be a great pickup but doubt he will be available when we pick in the 4th.  I think Marcus Lattimore or Johnathan Franklin would be a great pick.  I lean more towards Franklin, because he fits everything we need him to do.  Runs well, has good enough speed who explodes out of his cuts and through open holes, and has solid hands and good in pass protection.  Would be a 3 down back.

I think for WR someone who has been a bit under the radar that we can pick up in the 5th would be Rodney Smith. 6'4'' 225 out of Florida St. vertical threat down that has good hands, but a bit raw in terms of his route running, but nothing that Reggie Wayne can't help him with.  He might even drop to the 6th, so unless Quinton falls to us in the 4th I think RB would be a good pick.

  8. Is going to be my final mock draft before the draft tomorrow.

Trade first round pick to SF for 2nd and 3rd.

Pick 34 (From SF) - D.J. Hayden CB University of Houston

There has been a lot of hype about this kid over the past couple weeks leading up to the draft.  Mayock even has him as his number 1 CB this year, but I didn't think it was a big deal until I saw the tape.  Has great speed and quick feet, uses speed to close in on the ball.  Fights for the ball in jump ball situations and is fluid while mirroring WR's.  Solid in both zone and man coverage and although a big undersized does not shy away from contact and will take ball carriers down.  Everyone should know the story about this kid, hes going to be a good player.  I know a lot of people have him going late in the 1st round, but I see him more of a 2-3 round pick.  Guess we'll see.

Pick 74 (From SF) - Jamie Collins OLB Southern Miss

This is a kid that I've really fallen in love with over the past couple weeks.  He has great explosiveness and speed that helps close in on the QB.  Has long arms that helps with separation and is one of the better coverage linebackers in this years draft and has the speed to lineup with quicker TE's and slot receivers.  Had an amazing combine 6'3'' 250lbs 4.64 40, 41.5 inch vert, 139.0 inch broad jump.  He is a bit lean and still needs to fill out his frame and doesn't have great moves in the pass rush, but nothing that he can't learn from Robert Mathis.

    Pick 86 - Barrett Jones T/OG/C Alabama

Versatile offensive lineman that has played every position on the o-line for Alabama.  Shows good strength and has good technique and very smart.  Is not a great athlete  but has good fundamentals.  Will be able to help in both the run and passing game.

Pick 121 - Chris Harper WR Kansas St.

Good sized WR at 6'1'' 230 has a thick muscular build makes it hard for defenders to bring him down.  Has good speed for his size, 4.55 40, and has solid hands.  Does lose focus and occasionally drops the ball and a bit stiff in his hips and a bit raw in his route running, but nothing that Reggie can't help him with.  I can see him being groomed by Reggie and later replacing him.

Pick 192 - Knile Davis RB Arkansas

Has some question marks about being able to stay healthy, but if he can he can be a game changing 3 down running back.  Has the size to be a 3 down back 5'11'' 227 lbs and has great straight line speed.  Is big and strong enough to break through tackles, but agile enough to make defenders miss.  Not afraid of contact and has solid hands to catch passes out of the back field.  Needs to use his strength to get up on defenders and help in pass protection, goes fro cut blocks rather than body-to-body.  Ran a 4.37 40 and benched 31 reps.

Pick 230 - Eric Herman OG Ohio

Adding depth into our interior as we're pretty thin there.  Has good size 6'4'' 320 and had 36 bench reps at the combine.  Can't be much worse than McGlynn.

Pick 254 - Jonathan Stewart ILB Texas A&M

Mr. Irrelevant is Jonathan Stewart!  Good sized ILB that adds depth in the linebacking corp and can immediately contribute on special teams.

  9. I understand we don't have two 4th round picks. My introduction presupposes a trade back with the 49ers who have picks to trade.

WR is a need position. Wide receivers have a tendency to drop off precipitously near the end of their careers. This draft is deep at WR and the value is particularly there at the end of the 1st. Take a guy that can replace Wayne now and let him learn with Wayne for a couple years. Patton can be a great WR in this league.

The idea for Stoneburner is to get a guy that is under the radar that could be a steal. He was underutilized at Ohio State. I disagree that Allen is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league. That is just not an accurate statement. We often utilized a 3rd tight end even when Fleener was healthy near the end of the season. Stoneburner offers versatility. We will be using a FB more and he can be that guy in the backfield that can block as well as catch passes out of the backfield. He can also line up in the slot, on the line, numerous possibilities. Look at New England, they collect tight ends for a reason. Good ones offer matchup problems.

Also, it would be a mistake not to add depth at safety. I like Wolf. I would not be surprised if we add a free safety actually since Bethea is in the last year of his deal. Landry has an injury history. I think we can get a better backup that Lefeged.

If the WR is so deep in this class theres no reason to make a reach at the end of the 1st for Patton, hes probably gonna be a mid-to-late 2nd early 3rd round selection.  And Allen is one of the best blocking TE's in the League.  Watch the tape, he was effective in the run and the pass, even played fullback and paved the way for whoever was running.  We just traded for a FB from the Eagles who is just as versatile, and if we need someone to block we also have Saunders, there is absolutely no reason to draft a TE this year with so many other needs.  Drafting a TE at all this year would just be a waste.

You're choosing luxury over needs.  I would much rather us get an immediate need at G/C or OLB early.  Like I said before... WR is not a position of NEED. There's nothing wrong with looking at the future, but as of right now there are much more pressing needs that can be fixed through this draft.  We can find a quality WR that we can groom later in the draft or address it in FA or next years draft with our 1st round draft pick.

  10. I really feel like we need a WR in the first. If there is a good player that drops to #24, we might be able to trade back into the late first and pick up an extra 4th rounder, maybe even an extra 6th to boot. A team like the 49ers have picks they need to trade, all these guys will not make the team next year for them.

Trade back to #31 and take Quinton Patton from Louisiana Tech. The guy dominated the Senior Bowl and just like ten other WRs from this draft is a "Reggie Wayne clone"

In the 3rd, I would love to see us take Alvin Bailey, OG from Arkansas. I am sick of the musical chairs that is played at guard. We have Reitz who is healthy for about 8 games, McGlynn is effective on about half the snaps, and we are better off having no guard out there than play Linkenbach. Bailey is athletic for his size and would represent a tremendous upgrade over what we have.

With two 4th rounders, I would look at Earl Wolf, SS from NC State and Will Davis CB from Utah State. Tough to know if they will both be available, but they would offer solid depth in the secondary. Wolf is 5' 11" and and about 210 ilbs so he has good size. Landry has a history of injuries so a solid backup is a must. Davis has good size and speed. He offers depth with Toler and Davis having a history of injuries.

I have no ida who may be available in the 6th or if we do pick up an extra 6th if we can package them up into the 5th round, but a guy to look at would be Jake Stoneburner, TE Ohio State. I think this guy will be a late round steal. He is 6' 3" and 250 lbs and runs a 4.6 forty. He can line up in the slot or in the backfield. He is a James Casey type player that can bring a lot of versatility to an offense.

Honestly I couldn't disagree more.  WR is by no means our most needed position.  Drafting a WR this year is actually kind of a luxury, its just something that would be nice so we can groom them into something later on.  And we don't have 2 4th round picks, we have 1 and 2 7th round picks an no 5th round pick, not counting any trades.

And why would we draft a "versatile" TE? We have Allen and Fleener.  Allen is one of the best blocking TE in the game and he has good hands and decent speed.  Fleener is a guy who is working on his blocking, but can stretch the field at TE and make a lot of mismatches.  And I don't think we should draft a safety, if its going to be anyone it should be Cyperien in the 1st, but we do need another corner, but OLB and G I think are our most needed in this draft.

I would throw Nose Tackle in there, but I'm just gonna see how everyone does there this year. Josh Chapman, Franklin, etc.

  11. At work with nothing to do so I thought I would just write up another mock draft, but instead of with our original picks have make a trade and get a 2nd and 3rd rounder.

    2nd Round - Larry Warford G Kentucky

Big guard that can immediately make an impact as a starter from day 1.  Has good quickness for a man his size and can mirror defenders in pass protection and also has good upper body and lower body strength to drive defenders off the ball and can open up holes for the runner.

3rd Round - Terrance Williams WR Baylor

With other needs for other teams being more of a concern I can see Williams dropping to the 3rd round.  He is a big WR that has good speed and can be a vertical threat.  Has great size for targeting the in the red zone and can be a difference maker after Reggie Wayne retires.  He is a bit raw when it comes to running routes, but with Reggie helping him out for his first year or two this shouldn't be a problem and can be fixed.

3rd Round - Jamie Collins OLB/DE Southern Miss

Collins is a quick and fairly big defender that can get after the QB.  He came to the combine as 6'3'' 250 and still has room in his frame to get bigger, which shouldn't be a problem after a year or two hitting the weight room during the offseason.  He has good quickness and burst off the snap.  Big enough to make plays and disrupt at not only in the backfield, but at the line of scrimmage.  He is a bit unreliable when it comes to defending the run because he is quite lean and linemen can neutralize him, but once he fills out his frame this shouldn't be a problem as he is not afraid of contact. His athleticism is remarkable.  4.68 40, 41.5 inch vert, 139 inch broad jump.

4th Round - Tyrann Mathieu CB LSU

With his antics off the field and getting kicked out of LSU's football program makes it so that he drops down draft boards.  But in the 4th round I think its a good pick to try and get a risk-reward type of player.  He has good instincts at the corner position and can make plays on the ball.  Even though he is small (5'9'' 190lbs) he will fight for jump balls and is not afraid of contact.  Will bring his defender down and will go attack the ballcarrier on running plays.  Can also contribute in the return game.  I thought of him as a 3rd rounder, but with more and more off the field issues arising I can see him dropping to the 4th.

6th Round - Knile Davis RB Arkansas

After his great sophomore year he followed it up with disappointing junior and senior years because of injury and the Arkansas team underperforming as a whole.  He came to the combine healthy and showed us what he is capable of doing. Physical runner with good speed and showed good vision and burst if you watch his tape from his sophomore year.  I have no doubt in my mind that he can run the football and also has good hands and the strength/size to help in pass protection.  Came to the combine at 5'11'' 216 lbs.  Ran the 40 in 4.37 and bench pressed 31 reps.  Numbers and size are similar to Adrian Peterson.  Can be a game changer and 3 down back.

7th Round - Jonathan Stewart ILB Texas A&M

Big bodied linebacker (6'4'' 250lbs) that has good speed and punishes defenders with good instincts.  Can be immediate contributor on special teams and adds good depth to the linebacking corps.

7th Round - Quinn Sharp K/P Oklahoma St.

Has a good leg and shows he can hit kicks from 50+ yards consistently can challenge Vinatieri for starting job. He can also be a punter, but we already have McAfee for that.

  12. Mathieu would be a back-up for a year. The more I think about it, the only thing that he has the appeals to me is his return game. Having him would allow us to take TY off of punt returns. I think that is worth a 4th. As a corner no I don't like him, but as a returner and backup safety than yeah I think a 4th is worth it.

He appeals to me as a corner, hes aggressive has good technique, and is fluid.  He has the speed to keep up with WR and competes for balls doesn't matter how big they are.  And most CB's require a full season of NFL play before they get adjusted to the speed of the NFL game.  And his returning abilities are more the reason we should try him out.

We definitely need another guard. Swap your 3rd round pick for someone like Brian Winters or 4th for Alvin Bailey.

I agree with you that we need another guard, but I don't find either of these very appealing.  I think if Williams is available it would be much better to take him and try and find a guard/center combo later in the draft.  I know someone might try and reach for him, but would be a great pick up for us.

Mayock said that Moore game tape didn't equal his stats, more of a mid 2nd round pick.

This was a consensus top 5 player before his poor combine workout and doubts on his work ethic.  I doubt hes going to drop that far into the 2nd and theres only a handful of prospects I would take over him with our pick and they're more than likely not going to be there. I.e. Xavier Rhodes, Cooper.

And before some starts ranting on me for not taking a DT/OLB in this mock draft.  Although I think Walden wasn't a good sign in FA I think he will fill the void pretty well and there aren't many that caught my eye and for DT before I use another pick and try and draft someone I want to see how Franklin and Chapman play this year.  We have some pretty solid looking guys to play DT for us its just a matter of giving them a chance.  If they don't pan out well then theres always next years draft, its not as big a need as the others imo.  Just thought I'd throw this in here.

  13. My first post in the forums, I thought I would do a mock draft since its nearing draft day.

Round 1 Pick 24 - Damontre Moore DE Texas A&M
The more I think about who we can take here the more it makes sense we pick up Moore if he is available, but I do see him dropping down to us with his poor combine and just bigger needs for the teams ahead of us.  I don't think much about combine results and on tape this guy is a monster.  He plays the run really well and he can put pressure on the QB.  I think he would fit well as we are adjusting to our hybrid 3-4 defense.  Game tape shows better explosion and speed than his combine numbers showed.

Round 3 Pick 86 - Terrence Williams WR Baylor

Big physical WR thats a bit raw in terms of route running ability and catches with his body too much rather than with his hands.  These are all things that he can work on and someone Reggie can groom to fill his spot after he retires.  Hes a good redzone threat with great height (6'2'') and leaping ability (33'' Vert).

    Round 4 Pick 118 - Tyrann Mathieu CB LSU(Formerly)

Mathieu is someone who has fallen down because of decisions off the field and getting kicked out of LSU, but he showed up with good combine and proday numbers and is someone who I think we should role the dice.  He has a lot of upside and although hes undersized at 5'9'' he plays bigger than his height.  Is very sound in both man and zone coverage would help out our secondary a lot.

Round 6 Pick 182 - Knile Davis RB Arkansas

Davis is someone whos going to drop into the later rounds because of a poor showing his last 2 seasons in college and just better RB prospects that are ahead of him.  But looking back on his 2010 numbers this is a kid who knows how to run the ball, plays with good speed and power, and has good vision.  He came to the combine healthy at 5'10'' 227 lbs he ran a 4.37 40 and racked up 31 reps on the bench press.  He has comparable numbers to Adrian Peterson, just shorter and thicker.  He is going to be a good back in the NFL and could be the 3 down game changing RB the Colts have  been looking for since Edgerrin James.

Round 7 Pick 214 - David Quessenberry C/G/T San Jose St.

From a smaller division school, but had a good showing at the Senior Bowl and caught peoples eye.  He played OT at school, but can shift anywhere in the interior.  Decent athlete and quickness, good enough to pull if he played guard.  Is a bit thin compared to what you would like to see an interior linemen, but at 6'5'' he can thicken his frame just let him hit the weight room and he should fill in quicky. Is a good technician and can contribute at guard or use him for depth.

Just my ideal draft, I know anything can happen during draft day and some of you have these players taken higher up.  Thanks for reading.

  14. Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 30 (ATL): Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State (A-)
Round 3 Pick 1 (K.C.): Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor (A-)
Round 3 Pick 24: Jonathan Cyprien, SS, Florida International (A)
Round 3 Pick 32 (BALT): Barrett Jones, C, Alabama (A)
Round 4 Pick 2 (K.C.): Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina (A)
Round 4 Pick 24: Zaviar Gooden, OLB, Missouri (B+)
Round 6 Pick 24: Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas (D+)
Round 7 Pick 24: Joe Kruger, DE, Utah (C-)
Round 7 Pick 48 (COMP): Dan Conroy, K, Michigan State (D+)

I would be pretty content with this draft, although I hadn't realized that Knile Davis would have lasted till our COMP pick, but all in all if this happened later on in April I wouldn't complain.

  15. I think Knile Davis would be a great pickup if hes available in the 4th-5th round.  Hes 6'0'' 225 bench pressed 225 lbs 31 reps and ran a 4.37 at the combine.  Thats Adrian Peterson type numbers and size.  I know he wasn't very productive the last 2 years of his college career, but watching game tape during his 2010 season you know if you put him in front of a decent line and some quality coaching he is capable of being a top back in the NFL.
