  1. I really lost it on the first drive: 3rd and 3, and we throw the ball 20 yards deep. (after a time out for gads sake!!)

Really, really lost it on the second drive: 3 and 9ish and we throw a screen for a gain of two. Not just any screen, but the same one that we tried a few plays earlier when DB fell.

This type of inane play calling has been going on all year. Pep needs to go.

This is what I was going to comment on. Is it me or did we try a similiar thing last week in a 3rd and short situation? Granted that deep ball was almost caught and it would have been awesome but just pound it in or do a quick slant .

Play calling: C (probably should be a 'F' but no coach left behind).

  2. My take on the Steelers' line was that they tried to make chicken salad out of you know what for a number of years. Maybe the got the most out of the talent they had?

I hope he is prepared to make some chicken salad for the Colts. He better not skimp on the mayo either 'cause...I lost the metaphor. Anyway, with the injuries last year and the possibility of 2 starters retiring this year he is going to have his work cut out for him.

  3. With Wheeler in I would not be surprised to see the Browns test him with the run game. I think they would also try exploiting the middle zone coverage and bootleg at least 10 times.

Wheeler/Angerer/Conner is not a bad LB lineup. At least they have experience from last year playing together. Improved D-line should help them in stopping the run too.

  4. Two things regarding this.

Link didn't do too bad. On Williams first sack, the announcers talked about perhaps Link was supposed to come over to help but Clark sure didn't look like he was expecting inside help. The same thing happened last year where Clark was manned up on Mario and for that I blame Metz, there should never be a situation where a TE should be pass blocking a blitzing OLB man on man, it should always be a double even if it's with a back and TE. I'm still not a fan, never have been but he looked better than he did all preseason.

Polian said something similar about Link after the SD game last year. The following week he was riding the pine.

General comment regarding the thread I sincerely doubt if this guy is being brought in to start next week. That is not likely or feasible. It may indicate Diem moving back to RT and Pollack back at RG and they are bringing someone in who may be able to play both RG and LG as a backup. I wonder why they just didn't bring Tepper up from the PS though?

I've repressed most of my memories from this game but there was one point in the game I remember Clark talking to Metz on the sideline. It looked like a pretty heated argument. Clark did not look happy from the very start of the game. Maybe that is what he was so miffed about.

Link should not start. That should have been apparent from preseason. Pollak and Diem should man the right side. I do not think they will start a guy they just acquired unless he has a "S" burned in his chest and can harness the the power of the sun to unleash god-like pass blocking skills.

  5. The most obvious way to beat a 3-4 is to run it up the middle. But, I think the Colts come out throwing short/intermediate passes and let Collins get into a rhythm. Hit Addai with the screen when Williams rushes in. Then use Carter to wear down that front 7 with the up the middle runs. Then stretch the field with Addai.

I would like to see Clark line up in the slot and Tamme at TE. Two big physical receiving threats to exploit the inside coverage. If Williams is going to be rushing every down I do not see how they can stop this. Someone has to get single coverage. That person will likely be Garcon. Collins has a pretty wicked pump fake and can look off the Safeties. Use that to hit Garcon with the big play downfield. BAM! Now that is big time football.

  6. The grieving process is also a continuum. You do not necessarily go through the levels of grief in a linear fashion. You may also experience two or more of these processes at the same time. For example, I am both in the bargaining and depression stage. Please, God I am sooooo depressed I haven't bathed or moved from the couch in 13 days. I will wash your car for a week if you let Manning play this weekend. Meh, it's only football. This just means I can obsess about other, more important things. I can actually grow and be more productive from this experience. NO! I want Manning back! This isn't happening. This isn't happening. Game over man. Game over.

  7. He had the physical tools and was touted as being a really smart football player. In addition, the coaching staff and Management insured the fans that he was progressing and should have a spot on the starting line this season. The Colts also have a history of holding on to drafted O-line (Ugoh, Pollak, Richard, Thomas)even when they get beat out by undrafted guys. So yeah, I thought he was going to be on the roster at least as a backup to Reitz.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Toudouze.

  8. 1st off i wanna say manning is an * for waiting until late may early june to have the surgery and not as soon as the off season started and with or without manning i had the texans beating us so no big deal lets hopes he gets back week 2. we still have no run d so foster is gonna run all over us again part 2

Maybe he wanted to spend time with his family before having surgery and going through rehab. Maybe he had to get his mind right before the operation. Maybe he wanted to avoid surgery and thought he could play through it like he has done in the past. Maybe he secretly wants the Texans too.

  9. The only cut that surprises me is McClendon. Pollian made it sound like this guy would be the starter this year somewhere on the line. There was talk about grooming him to be Center. They praised his intelligence and physical ability. I may have read into those comments too much and figured he going to develop either this year or next. Still, somewhat surprised.

  10. First off, how is hobbit2000 able to post a new topic when this is his first post? I thought you had to have 20 posts under your belt before that happened. Also has anyone else noticed that all of these "sign whatever big name is on ESPN today" threads are only started by new members? Oh well to each his own.

To address the topic, what is your source? The last I heard about Moss coming to Indy was that he was at St. Elmos a while back. I don't think we have the money for any more free agents, let alone a receiver that doesn't exactly fit the Colts' receiver mold. I'm 95% certain Moss will not be a Colts until I see more info.

I've been steadily plucking away at the 20 post limit since this forum relocated. While I may not be the most articulate or knowledgeable forum poster, there have been times I would have liked to start a thread and was not able to because of this rule. So, what gives? Does hobbit2000 know a guy who knows a guy? Is this "guy" also the source of these revived Moss rumors? Will the eventual shifting of the poles detrimentally change the Earth's magnetosphere? What was I talking about again? Oh, well I will get back on topic my next post. Oh, wait I can't post anymore today because of the rules!

  11. Couldn't agree more. But I won't be too upset if we get 1/16th of the value for him if he starts one game or even 1/8th if it's two games. That gives the O-Line more time to gel as a unit. And Peyton more time to heal.

As far as Collins, he still has the arm, no doubt about that. He also has the experience. I never realized that he had such a long windup. The way the line looked last night, he's going to have to get rid of that ball a half second sooner.

He can still zip it in there!

There's a lot of film on this guy too. Coaches teach their defense to go for the ball because it's going to be hanging out there. Still, I think his experience makes him a better backup than Painter.

  12. I never understood this either. It seems to me, the only way stunting works is if by chance or by a mistake on the offense. They have to watch the film on this. They have to see that Freeney gets to the QB 2 seconds slower than if he just spins or bull rushes. So frustrating to see a DT finally getting penetration and then you "mix" it up by taking everyone's ability to get the QB. I ranted about this last year so if I say anymore I'm going to boil over.

    No stunts in regular season.

    CB don't give a 10 yard cushion.

    Disguise the blitz.

    Top 10 Defense, Done.

  13. My three things for which to watch...at (so hard not to end a sentence in a preposition):

    1) How Collins reacts to pressure. He does not have the quick release which has led to sacks and fumbles in the past. Since he will not be working with 1st string i think he will be under pressure a lot.

    2) WRs. With all this talk of Gonzo still being hurt possible waived and White possibly going to IR, I want to see if Brooks or someone else (Smith?)steps up and earns that spot.

    3) CB play. I am thinking the Bengals are going to pass a lot in this game. Hope to see somebody step up and challenge Lacey for the position. Tryon is still the guy in my mind but I'd like to see Thomas or Rucker show us why they were drafted.

Only 10 more days until football fo real!

  14. A little surprised by the waiving of Glenn. He seemed to be an adequate ST player, and wasn't terrible when he had to play D...

The cut of Moore isn't overly surprising, to me at least. Once the regular season starts, I think we'll see touchbacks increase greatly.

Apparently he was waived more because of injuries. I thought he played well last year and a ST contributor. Can't really say that Moten, Colasanti, Triplett or Kerry Neal (never even seen this guy on the field) are better than him.

  15. D-line: I was pumped about the D-line play all night. Imagine when Mathis gets in the game. So much pressure coming from everywhere. Several times during the first half I remember shouting "that's Colts' football!". Forcing checkdown throws or RB to bounce it to the outside where they gang tackle for short gains.

Wheeler: I'm not a big Wheeler fan, mostly because of his poor tackling, but I thought he was laying the wood out there. (maybe it was Caldwell, my screen is small and they both have the hair covering their numbers).

O-line: Maybe Link needs another week of practice to get down the RT spot with Diem. I just don't want them to continue experimenting with the O-line throughout the regular season. I think continuity is important to the pass blocking. Maybe I have selective amnesia but didn't Link do okay last year at RT filling in for Diem?

  16. The thing with the Tampa 2 is that our guys always play 5-10 yards in front of receivers to keep them from getting behind.

Unfortunately I've lost count on how many times we've gotten burned on third and long with this mindset. Most of the time in Lacey's direction.

It doesn't work. Move him a max of 5 yards off the receiver so he can GET there! He can't tackle once they have it, so may as well let him try and disrupt the pass.

This seems to be his strength. Seems to play well at about 5 yards off and is able to anticipate the short pass and break it up or go for interception. He has not been good at tackling in the preseason. Against the Packers he actually took Wheeler out of the play when the receiver slung him around like a hula hoop and proceeded to run for 30 yards.

I like Tryon over Lacey. Hopefully, the Colts can scout up some more CB depth after the roster shake-down this Tuesday.

  17. I think Hughes still has potential. He needs to work on the spin move or have Mathis teach him how to take an angle. He has the speed, he just needs a something to go with it-spin move, bull rush, swim, something.

Unfortunately, RB have to prove their worth from the start. They don't get time to develop. I'm conflicted on Brown. I think he has shown flashes and has actual game experience. On the other hand Carter looks like the real deal and James looks to be coming along too.

  18. I would say our D-line did a good job. 4 sacks on Rogers (who is a very mobile QB).

    Nevis continues to impress me.

    Harris got good pressure too.

Angerer looked like he took a bad angle on that touchdown pass in the 1st. Otherwise that was good coverage.

I'm going to put D. Brown in the "good" category. Had some really good blocks. On one play I think he took 2 defenders out of the play.

    The bad:

Pass blocking. I know this is a blitz happy D but come on. Give your QB more than 2 seconds. Harrison was in the backfield before Painter even got the ball.

  19. Pretty much on board with everyone else. Don't really have much to add but i'm trying to get some posts approved so I can start threads too.

Linkenbach did okay at run blocking. By "okay" I mean by Colts standards. Which translates to really bad.

He did terrible on pass blocking. If you can't pass block on this offense you are of no use.

Keep Diem at Guard. Let Ijalana take some reps or back to, ugh...Pollack at G and Diem at T.
