  1. I don't really see it as a down grade for Chris Polian.

I agree, I was comparing the new hire to the Bill Polian legacy--in that sense its a downgrade. I'm excited to have new talent at GM. I'm not a big Irsay fan--I remember too much from his years as a manager to think that he could have changed at his core. But people do change--and his Christian experience has something to do with it as well. Something happened to Irsay when he went through rehab that made Christianity more important to him. Lets give it a chance.

  2. How is it a downgrade?

    YOU JUST GOT HIRED!

I see it as a downgrade because Bill Polian in his prime was one of history's most successful GMs. He took a terrible Bills team and made a great team. He took a hopeless situation in Indy and made it into a historically great franchise. So we just traded one of the best managers in the history of pro sports for a dude that has never been a GM before who is from Lafayette. It sounds to me like another knee jerk mistake by Irsay (like drafting Jeff George). I'm hopeful that he will be good--I certainly will give him a chance to prove himself-- but Irsay's success as an owner was all due to Bill Polian. Irsay himself was a reckless manager who compounded knee jerk mistake upon stupid decision. If it wasn't for Polian, the Colts would have gone to LA. It seems like people who love Irsay have too short a memory.

  3. i think i will remember that irsay has a pretty good track record on his choices.

welcome the new guy and hope for the best!

Yes hope for the best. For me this is deffinately a downgrade at GM. But, Polian has not been at his best recently, Chris Polian was not the GM of the future. I'm glad Irsay has made a decision to bring in a pro (as opposed to managing the team himself like he used to).

  4. This year is alot like '98. In '97 we were 1 -15 and Polian had drafted many O-linemen in the previous draft, and we were able to bring in a great young prospect in Peyton Manning. I don't believe Luck would be like Ryan Leaf. In fact, he would be ideal for the offense we have. He is a decision maker--a mental quarterback. A ball distributor--a pocket passer. Luck is perfect for the NFL and especially for the Colts. He has the mental capacity to process 3 to 4 receivers in the pattern and chose the best one on time. That is what separates great NFL qbs.

Another thing, Jeff George was a knee jerk mistake by GM Jim Irsay. As GM Irsay was terrible.--I hope he hasn't forgotten how bad he was and why he hired Polian in the first place. I hope the firings of the Polians is not just another knee jerk mistake like Jeff George (and his bloated contract) or Eric Dickerson was. We need a new GM yesterday--I wish Irsay would go ahead and hire Tressel as GM. I believe he can build a great football team. I know no one is talking about Tressel for GM, its just how I feel.

  5. I think Irsay fired the Polians because they wanted to keep Caldwell. What I'm most worried about is that Jim Irsay may end up not hiring another GM--but might take the job back himself--"ouch". What I most want to see is Jim Tressel promoted to some other capacity. He is tremendously talented and could make a good GM, coordinator, or head coach in my view. He is unproven, but so is everybody before they prove it. You think he doesn't know football talent enough to be a GM, or how to build a great football team? He does--he would be good at whatever job he was put in.

Our special teams (kick coverage) has been terrible the last several years, and its not because the special teams coach can't coach, its because we don't put elite athletes on the field for kick coverage. The best college coaches put their best athletes on the kickoff and punt teams. In the pros we don't do that cause we don't want to get em hurt. Changing the coach is not going to help if we don't put elite athletes on the field.

  6. I believe Irsay will trade the No. 1 pick in the draft for incredible value. The Colts will bring Peyton back with a pretty good re-vamped team next year. But in 3 or 4 years we won't have Manning, we won't have Luck, and our team will not be as good as it would have been if we took Luck and released Manning.

The one aspect that could change that is the Caldwell situation. Manning likes Caldwell, but Irsay wants to fire him. The Polians both liked Caldwell, and that's why they got fired. If Irsay really wants to fire Caldwell, and Peyton really doesn't like that idea, it could be the end of the road for Peyton in Indy. I think there is a compromise--Caldwell could go back to QB coach (I don't know if he would).

One more thing, it doesn't seem to me like the Colts picked up Jim Tressel so he could be the red flag guy for the rest of his career. I suggest that he could be a good head coach or GM.

  7. I dont see how it's possible to keep Manning, Draft Luck and still have money to pay quality players to be competitive. If it turns out this way I dont know why, other then maybe a sense of loyalty, Peyton would want to stay here for the remainder of his career.

well, we can do it for 1 or maybe 2 years because of the adjusted rookie pay scale. Luck will make far less under the new collective bargaining agreement. The only reason Irsay fired the Polians is to get a new coach. I like the idea that Caldwell (who wasn't terrible) might stay on as QB coach. I don't know what Irsay is thinking, but I do remember he was a horrible GM and we need another good one like today. I also know that we have a talented mature man named Jim Tressel on staff who I could respect as either GM or head coach.

  8. How about Jim Tressel for GM? Atleast the idea deserves consideration. I think the only reason Irsay let the Polians go is that they liked Caldwell, and Irsay wanted to fire Caldwell, which task he will summarily accomplish. The last few years Chris Polian has been a below average choice for GM. Apparently, Bill Polian is passed his great years, and Chris Polian is not a replacement. But the worst possible scenario is going back to Jim Irsay as general manager. He was the worst GM in sports history, and it was his vicodin addiction in 1995 that led to his rehab, which led to hiring Bill Polian as general manager. Bill Polian saved the Colts in Indianapolis. Because of him we were able to build a new stadium here. I think that its another horrible mistake by Irsay to fire Bill/Chris Polian like this--and the Colts will end up being worse because of it. Caldwell is a decent coach and they don't grow on trees. We had a chance to build a culture of success here, but because of one bad year, Irsay has torn down the whole thing and the Colts will start over. Its horrible timing for this, sickening.

  9. I didn't say anything about Tomlin, he is just a cog in the steelers machine, just like Cower and knoll were as well. The point is its not about the head coach. The Colts have a brand new offensive line, a defense thats in flux and no qb. The same coach went 14 - 0 out of the box 2 years ago. Why do we want to fix whats not the problem? We've got to fix the right problem.

  10. We don't need a super star for a coach. A coach in the NFL is a just a cog in the machine like everyone else. We've already got the right guy as head coach. The most successful franchise "steelers) have never fired their head coach, why? because they understand how to run a successful and competetive franchise. They don't need the best guy in the league, they just need their guy. We've already got our guy as head coach. Firing coach Caldwell would be like going to the doctor w/ 2 broken arms and broken legs, and having the doctor say you need a head transplant. Whatever is wrong w/ the Colts there is nothing wrong w/ the head.
