  1. as Mike Golic has said countless times on mike and mike in the morning... the combine drug test is the "stupid test" if you fail that test, with millions of dollars on the line, that you know is coming for months/years even, you sir are an *.

personally I don't think them passing a combine drug test makes a difference, especially when dealing with a serial offender like Mathieu. You have to hear them speak, see the passion in them when they say they have reformed and our past that stuff, and they are moving forward with their life in order to believe it.

If you don't believe them when you speak to them, then it changes nothing about his history in your eyes. The combine test is irrelevant to me/my evaluations unless you fail. Because then as I said previously, you failed the stupid test, and I am not sure you can control yourself in anyway, why should I consider drafting you?

  2. But if your making a draft for a team, you should at least research that teams needs and players they are looking at...

assuming this isn't just a large 3 round mock draft where they simply pull out the picks for individual teams, (which it has to be to go around and do every division) the guy would be drafting for an entire division. The guys in the NFL who get paid for this are in no way shape get this right all the time, and all they do is focus on which guys fit their schemes the right, they don't try and do an entire division.

You are being somewhat unrealistic here with your expectations. These media guys do everything they can to get to know the surface level of a team, because 32 surface level understandings of an organization is a ton of information. I would bet, its significantly more information to understand and keep straight than it would be to be an expert on one team.

That said the media are still *s and are wrong more than they are right (for the exact reason that they can't be experts on everything at once).

  3. Do you think anyone will come back again the 2nd night if they don't get picked up the first?

Well since the Tebow year, they have had a ton of prospects at the draft. Last year was the largest 'class' ever, and I believe the last guy was drafted in the second half of the third round on day two. Most guys who slide come back, but some absolutely refuse to return, last year it was Cordy Glenn (eventually drafted early 2nd by the Bills) and the year before was Akeem Ayers (eventually drafted early 2nd as well by Tennessee).

Looking at the list, I would be shocked if no less than 4-5 guys slide out of round 1.

  4. Ball has diminutive stature??     Really?

    He's 5'11" and 210-215.     That's not diminutive....

But, I don't think he's in play for purposes of this conversation....    I think he'll be long gone...   and he's more a zone-read RB...  Not to say he couldn't run in our system...   but I'm not sure it's ideal either...

He's a tiny guy. Guys his size who make it in the NFL have legs bigger than the average dudes chest. Have you seen MJDs legs? How about C.J. Spiller? They need those gigantic legs to prevent injury to their lower bodies and to run through arm tackles. Ball doesn't have that trait.

He's had some injury issues in school (not major) but its still a bit of a question. Ball IMO won't be a very productive NFL back. But that's just one guys opinions.

  5. No way Monte Ball is there at 4. He's gone b4 the end of 2 if he's there at our 3 Irsay himself should run the card to the podium. I like Stefon Tayor for the fact that he's a good back and of course he already knows the offense (born ready) I personally would love it if Joesph randell was sitting there.

Be ready to be surprised then. ball has so much wear on his tires.... He can't be a feature back at the next level for very long, if at all given his diminutive stature.

  6. When you have a Ferrari you don't drive it like a pickup truck as all I'm saying...The big mauler slow down game is what teams do that don't have an all-time great qb...We have speed all over the place at receiver and a good back in Ballard if you add Lacy thunder and lightning.... So, would you rather win 21-13 or open it up and win 56-13???

There is so much wrong with this post I don't even know where to start.

    1. you don't have an all-time great QB. You had one. Then you drafted one of the greatest prospects ever, and he had a damn good rookie year. But make no mistake, at this stage of his development, Luck is not Peyton, he isn't Brady nor Rodgers or even Brees. If you want him to get there, you have to develop him and keep him upright.

David Carr is one of the top 20 QB prospects of all-time (my opinion) and he now has a syndrome named after him. If you don't have a capable OL Luck could get David Carr'd. And that would be a damn shame, he could be one of the best ever.

    2. You have speed on the inside, no real #2 threat, and an aging superstar who could fall off a cliff at any time.

    3. Ballard and Lacy = thunder and lightning? Oh that's bad.... Thunder is for a pure power back, lightning is for a pure speed guy, the best example in recent memory is Tiki Barber and Brandon Jacobs for the Giants a few years ago. Lacy and Ballard don't fit either mold properly. A good tandem, but not really something that should be classified as thunder and lightning. Oh and Lacy would be a big reach at 24, but that's really besides the point isn't it?

    4. No team in NFL history has ever consistently won 56-13. Not even the 07 Patriots routinely did that, and they were the best offensive team of all-time.

    5. In the NFL it doesn't matter how you win, just that you do it. Each team needs it own identify and The colts have decided to go ground and pound until Luck develops and is ready to lead a team to the promised land slinging it around like Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers. The biggest mistake the colts can make (and it does t appear as if they are) is to assume the kid is already Peyton Manning. He isn't, and won't be that level of elite for quite awhile, if ever.

  7. Our draft has kicked off.... So for anyone interested in following along here is our two primary threads

Draft selections thread - please do not post here it is selections only! http://www.youdontknowfootball.com/forum/showthread.php?2809-YDKF-7-RD-Mock-Selection-Thread

Draft discussion here - please feel free to join in the discussion, only one major rule, don't discuss undrafted players! http://www.youdontknowfootball.com/forum/showthread.php?2812-YDKF-7-RD-Mock-Discussion-Thread&p=140066#post140066

I will do my best to keep you all informed of the colts draft as we go along. I'm sure as it gets close to my picks, I'll start throwing out names and ideas as we get close to picks.

  8. Since 2003 the only Dt's taken in top 10 to go to a probowl-Kevin Williams and Suh, and this includes Dewayne Robertson. Floyd will go top 10. You have a better chance getting a pro bowl DT from 11-21-...Such as2004#14- Tommie Harris, #21-Vince Wilfork-...2006 #12 Haloti Ngata,-2007-#13-Adam Carriker-2011#21-Phil Taylor.

That is not what you said. You said DTs in the top 10 are more likely to bust than any other position. I'd love to see the numbes.

As far as this new argument about more likely to go to a pro bowl, that needs to be done on percentages. What percent of DTs taken in the top 10 went to a pro bowl? What percent take from 11-20 went to a pro bowl?

Otherwise, you could simply make arbitrary statements like picking in the top 10 is useless because in the last decade their have only been 50 pro bowlers selected there, where as elsewhere in the draft there have been 120 pro bowlers. Now those numbers are arbirtrary and clearly well under the actual numbers. But with percentages those numbes are misleading...

Oh and BTW what is with the Jets hate? Seriously you go out of your way to do that. I come here on a peaceful mission and you seem to want nothing more than to * me off. If I did something to provoke you, I'm sorry, but grow up.

  9. If Lattimore is available in the 7th take him and let him rehab this season...That could be another gem and forward thinking pick, the way players are coming back from injuries these days it's def worth a 7th rd flier...

Remember Willis Mcgahee going 21 overall after obliterating his knee? Lattimore was the best back in this draft before his injury. If he isn't off the board before the end of the 4th I'd be shocked. And if he is still on the board after day 2 it will be a very big surprise.

  10. USA Today actually talks to his QB Coach Spavital and his teammate Stedman Bailey and get their take on Smith and his character and work ethic, people that actually been around him

    http://m.usatoday.com/article/news/2047693

I will say a few things about that article, #1 there is nothing to gain and everything to lose for Spavital and Bailey badmouthing Smith publically.

Secondly, the way Spavital defends Smith says something to me. He is absolutely over the top in his defense. He could simply have said 'the report is untrue, Geno is going to be great at the next level' but he didn't, he over-did everything he said. Which means one of two things, either he actually believes it, or he wants everything to think he does very badly.

IMO Smith is an athlete that found success at the college level due to Holgersons one-read system, and the ridiculous level of talent around him. Austin and Bailey will both be high picks, he has had 2 or 3 OL drafted over the past two years. Smith struggled against Syracuse two years in a row, despite WVU being the more talented team in every way. Smith threw a hissy-fit two years ina row when Marrone was kicking his butt in the state of NY.

It's for those football reasons I don't think Geno will be successful at the next level.

  11. Vontae wasn't speaking on Nawrocki, if you follow Vontae on twitter you would he does VontaeCorner everyday that's just him giving his tip of the day or his message for the day. I just felt it fit with what is going on here so I plugged it inAs far as scouts not BSing each other.Does these anonymous quotes on RGIII last year ring a bell:"Everybody is just assuming because of the Heisman and the socks and all that *. . . . they are ignoring a lot of bad tape that he's had," a third scout said. "I don't think he has vision or pocket feel, which to me are the two most important components of quarterbacking. He's just running around winging it. He's (Michael) Vick, but not as good a thrower. [...]He has better arm action and is more accurate with his deep ball, but he's not as good as Cam Newton," a fourth scout said. "As much as is written about his athleticism, his athleticism under duress in the pocket isn't even close to Cam Newton's. This guy, the only way he gets big plays with his feet is if he's got a wide-open field and the sea opens for him. He's got a little bit of a selfish streak, too. Everybody was laying on Cam, but for some reason this guy has become gloves off. He doesn't treat anybody good."Selfish streak and doesn't treat anybody good, yea scouts don't * each other

I don't follow Vontae Davis. I'm not a fan of his team.

I'm still confused what's wrong with the RGIII analysis? One scout said he has bad tape, well of course he did. the point about him needing the red-sea to part to make a big time play with his feet was true on tape. RGIII was not a runner in college, he was a thrower, he only ran when either he had no choice, or the red-sea parted.

As to why everybody laid on Cam, but laid off RGIII, Cam was caught doing bad things, and so it was easy to rip on him (negativity and purity sell best after all). For RGIII, nothing bad was out there for the general public, and my-oh-my isn't he the most charismatic QB prospect ever? So the media makes him the saint, plying up the purist angle.

As to how poorly RGIII treated his teammates, I don't know. I just know that behind closed doors, scouts will talk openly about their opinions of players without fear of it coming back on them.

At the end of the day, remember these are all opinions on players. One scout may see RGIII ripping on his teammates as him being an *, and the next may see those exact same actions as him being an elite leader that holds his teammates accountable. That's how opinions work, two people take the facts about a situation and form their beliefs about what they mean.

  12. Never even met the guy but talks about his character, work ethic, and personality. Never even met the guy

@VontaeDavis23: #VontaeCorner: Never judge a person based off of someone else's opinion of them......

That person he heard it from(although he didn't source) might have a personal agenda on the guy/player. If you are going to make those kind of accusations at least go see for yourself and talk to his coaches and teammates who are around Jim everyday. This guy never met Geno, never been on WV campus to talk to his coaches or teammates but he knows all this stuff about his personality and character.

Well, to be fair, how does Vontae know what Nawrocki has or hasn't done? I haven't seen anything from WV staff/teammates that says they didn't talk to Nawrocki.

On top of it the scouting community has a somewhat sacred bond. They don't nonesense each other (or rather aren't supposed to) so saw Nawrocki is talking to a scout who says "yeah I was talking to Holgerson the other day about Geno, and he tells me ........ " so Nawrocki could just run with it.

Unfortunately we won't know exactly what happened and how Nawrocki got his I FO, because he won't ever give up his sources...

  13. I personally think a great QB can make your wr's better no matter what round they were drafted (or undrafted) in

    Conner Verson

    Emory Blake

    Tyrone Goard

    Alec Lemon

    Cory Fuller

    Aaron Mellette

    4th or later for me

all would do good for us in my opinion

No disagreements with that statement. I was just curious how the fan base feels, is it WR early (aka Wayne's replacement) or not at all. Or we need a WR somewhere...

  14. Watt was surrounded with NFL caliber talent, while Hunt is the only NFL talent on SMU and I doubt it's a coincidence that a team that once faced the death penalty suddenly began getting back to bowls...All you have to do is watch the tape??? I've watched plenty and it's not all about sacks, he had a ton of pressures and blew up a lot of plays...He has a motor like Watt and has the look in his eyes as well....If you notice a trend with Gholson and Ducasse it is the Jets where players go to die other than Revis , they are becoming the new Raiders...He blocked 17 field goals and when he begins being coached to tip and deflect passes like Watt he will create big plays and turnovers...It's not just the height, speed, and power...More than anything it's the motor and passion he plays with...The only thing that worries me is the age, but DE has a longer shelf-life than most positions....Okafor and Moore will be busts I just can see it....If we pass it better be for Hunter or trading down and taking Lacy, or possibly Austin if he falls because he is just a pure playmaker and would give us a true return man for the first time years even though he is similar to Hilton who says it's a bad thing to have 2 players like that on the field at the same time??? We could become the greatest show on turf 2.0....The signing of HBD has allowed us to go in either direction, but I still believe Hunt has the potential to have the biggest upside of ANY player in the draft and it's worth a risk, we never took risks with Polian and he had multiple busts his last 5 years in charge anyways...

Ok, the jets bashing is bullsh-t. The Jets were an exceptional team all of two seasons ago, Colts fans should know, we had you on the ropes until Peyton pulled off a signature drive just before the half. There is no reason to pretend every jets draft pick is a failure. We have drafted a plethora of damn good football players. Unfortunately none of them are QBs. Like I said a few days ago, not everyone is as lucky as the colts to suck at exactly the right time to draft 3 of the 5 greatest QB prospects of all-time in Elway, Manning and Luck.

The reason I picked those two as examples is because I know the Jets like the back of my hand, and i dont need to do a second of research to find examples. if you would like, i can sure as heck go find a bunch of them for every team In the league, including hour precious Colts.I would also bet if I actually delved into the Colts draft history you have some pretty ugly busts as well.

As for Hunt, agree to disagree then. Hunt wasn't a dominant college player despite having ridiculous potential due to his athleticism, and his relatively poor level of competition. As for the guy with the most potential in the draft, that my friend is a toss up between Sharrif Floyd DT from Florida and Dion Jordan OLB out of Oregon. They were both dominant high level D1 athletes with absolute freakish athleticism to go with their insane size and strength. Hunt was just a freak without production, and it will take him years to tap into his potential, if he ever does. Those two.... Are in another galaxy as far that goes. Doesn't mean they will reach their potential, but theirs is so much higher than Hunt it's not even funny. And Hunts is pretty damn high.

  15. You understand DHB contract is only 1 year. and Reggie is getting old...so if one is there the FO likes...why not ?

    no wr needed now

Speaking of WR, is this a take one high, or don't take one at all kinda need for the colts? Or would you be willing to take a guy in the later rounds (4th round on)?

  16. Apparently this guy is very well known in NFL circles.    McShay agreed with some of the criticism, but thought overall it was a bit harsh yesterday on M&M.    Mayock was just on M&M and he totally defended this guy.     And said there is no way he drafts Geno in the top 10 and maybe even the first round.

And as far as Cam he questioned his commitment and maturity.      Which after watching some of Cam's meltdowns last season he may not be too far off base.

Ding ding ding... Nawrocki is well respected in the scouting circles and has been doing this a long time. Also the guy is comparing PLAYING STYLES of players, not their future success. What he is saying by comparing Smith to Brooks and Akili is that he may have the ability to move in the pocket, but he isn't a real threat to take off and run. Also people forget Akili Smith was the 3rd overall pick for a reason, he had a considerable amount of talent, and he never recovered from an injury to play up to his potential.

As for Cam, Nawrocki never questioned his playing ability, but questioned his maturity, and ability to lead when things go bad. Well, fast forward two years, Cam is acting like a two year old, pouting around and there were whispers that teammates are starting to question his leadership....

  17. First, let me say thanks for taking the time to do this right.

Now on to the details.  I guess I would first point out that we've generally stuck to a theme this off-season which is to get better at running and stopping the run.  Pagano, like all defensive minded coaches, believes in this philosophy deeply.  Arians on the other hand was a pass first, pass often offensive guy and our team did just that last year.  So you will probably see us continue to transition the team in the draft to a more balanced offense and a bigger, more physical defense.

    Our needs in order (IMO):

RG - This is probably the only position now on the team where no one has a clue who could or will be the starter.

ILB - We really only have 3 guys to play these two spots and 2 of those guys (Angerer and Connor) are in contract years.  I could also see us continuing to beef up against the run here with a thumper type prospect which you could argue only Connor fits.

WR - For the present there is a depth issue here on the outside but we also need to find a WR of the future.  Wayne is getting older.  DHB is on a one year deal.  Hilton and Brazil are more suited for the slot.  We could find the future now or wait a year but depth is still a must.

S - We have 3 capable safeties, 2 starters.  We brought in Landry but cut Zibikowski... so there is an immediate hole at the #2 SS spot.  We also have to consider that Bethea is in a contract year and personally I don't think Grigson will bring him back.  Lefeged is pretty good but starter quality?  Not sure.

CB - We have bodies and some decent guys now.  I'm not quite sold that Toler is a #2 guy.  A great #3 but there's a question there.  Butler is a good #3 and quality depth.  Vaughn and Gordy are on RFA tenders and could be easily cut in camp or gone next year.  Vontae Davis is in a contract year.  I could see us going high in the draft for a corner or not getting one at all.

5 players I want... this is harder:

RG - One of the 2 top guards (Warmack and Cooper) would put a huge smile on my face but it won't happen unless we trade up. Alvin Bailey, Hugh Thornton, Barrett Jones or Brian Schwenke will make due otherwise.

ILB - Jon Bostic perhaps and I'm not as down on Teo as others are, I'd be ok with him.

WR - An outside receiver obviously so no Tavon Austin for me.  I want size and upside to be that #1 successor to Reggie.  Justin Hunter, Da'Rick Rogers, Chris Harper

S - Lots of depth all the way through this draft at safety.  If we get to a spot where we can't fill another hole with value, safety is probably our best bet.

CB - I like Trufant, true shut down type athletic ability.. and bloodline.  Robert Alford intrigues me as well.  I value players who show up at the senior bowl.

    Ideal first round

Like I said, one of the top 2 guards would be ideal.  Otherwise Trufant or Fluker who I think can play both guard and tackle (could use some more tackle depth as well)... or if need be, Teo or Arthur Brown.  A trade up or down would probably be ideal depending on who fell.

    Late round sleepers

Staying with the theme.  I could see us picking up another physical running back.  Someone like Zac Stacy or Rex Burkhead.  Perhaps a fullback to compete with Havili such as Kyle Juszczyk.

    Team interest

We've shown a good amount of interest to Duke Williams, Shamarko Thomas, Ty Powell, and Christine Michael

Good luck.  Be sure to post the results to us.

Thanks for the thorough response. We actually kick off the draft tomorrow. I will certainly post the results. I can even post the draft threads for those that want to follow along in the discussion supposing of course it doesn't violate any rules here on ColtsFans. We do a lot of interesting things with our mocks and frankly I can't get enough of em.

Hopefully I put the Colts in a position to succeed. As we get further in the draft, I will probably start asking questions specifically about certain players as the draft board gets whittled down.... So I guess I'm asking guys to keep tabs on the thread so I can get any last minute input that's possible.
