CB doing great job, hitting all areas of need with players we like.

You hit it on the head. For once, our GM is selecting 1) players in areas of need, and 2) players that this forum generally likes. I'm not saying this is a guarantee for success, but it sure makes things much more fun for us!

It feels like I'm following a completely different team. Not only are we drafting good players w/ great value & hitting needs... but we also seemed to do well in free agency. Signed guys hitting their prime years & having youth, cutting older expensive veterans, being smart with money, obtaining extra draft picks...

Weird. But in a good way!

Derek Rivers, Tim Williams and Carl Lawson still on the board. Let's go COLTS!

Darnit, Jordan Willis was just taken. I'm hoping that doesn't setoff a run of EDGE rushers right before our pick. If we land any of these guys in the 3rd round, with the elite secondary players we've already taken... it'd be the most solid Rounds 1-3 selections I can remember

Wilson has the size of a free safety and a knack for reading routes and breaking on the ball that will make him a zone-coverage asset. He turns his head to play the ball in the air better than most collegiate defenders. He’s a No. 1 cornerback.

The Malik Hooker-Wilson 1-2 punch upgrade of the Colts secondary is going to have a noticeable impact on their won-loss column.

    Grade: A

When have the Colts' first two draft selections ever been graded so highly?? This feels like a different franchise. I can get used to this!

Chris "GOAT" Ballard, I love you.

Can you remember the last time our 1st- and 2nd-round picks were both:

    • 1) Great values at their selection spots
    • 2) Top-5 talents at their positions
    • 3) Easily fit our positions of need for our team
    • 4) Were arguably BPA when taken

Whatever Ballard's daily routine is, he needs to keep doing it. Wear the same shirt, eat the same breakfast, go to bed at the same time... don't change a thing CB. Keep up the good work!

Im glad we got him. I would have been mad if we drafted cook there.

Funny you say that, because I was telling my buddy "Knowing my Colts draft day history, I halfway expect us to draft Dalvin Cook here. With Hooker and Allen on the board. It would be a typical Colts pick."

Thank goodness that was not the case.

Thank you for proving my point.

Like I said actually watch some tape on the kid before taking someone else's write up as gospel.

As as far as your "write up" I already alluded to his lacking ability to take necessary angles but the rest of that is trash.  He finishes tackles just fine and his balance coming into question is downright laughable as his acrobatics (and impeccable turns to catch) is shown routinely in every scouting report and highlight reel you can find.

But hey let's go grab a sure fire tackling safety that can't follow the ball in the air... oh wait we have that already in Green, except he really can't tackle well either...

I cracked up at his "WEAKNESSES ALL IN BOLD TO EMPHATICALLY MAKE MY POINT" post. Which, by the way, I will point out that every player ever drafted has weaknesses. Especially players who are only 1-year starters and are far from being the finished products they will be upon entering the NFL and improving throughout their careers. But you know, I think kicking off your college career as a 1st-Team All-American is a pretty good start :)

Anyway, I really hope that "WEAKNESSES" becomes a Colts Fan Forum meme, when people try to prove points in a bizarre/overly aggressive way. I don't know, it just strikes me funny lmao

Calling him a no-name was a consequence of posting while disappointed.  You were right to call me out on that one.

I appreciate your response.  You made me start to feel better about the pick.  I knew a bit about him, but genuinely didn't think he'd go as high as he did in Round 1.

On a side note, I think your post is the epitome of how to respectfully disagree with someone on the board.  A genuine and sincere thank you for that.

Thanks man, no worries. And let's make this very clear - none of us have any idea how this pick will turn out. Every NFL draft pick has a 50/50 shot of being great or being a bust. So maybe all of us "OH YEAH HOOKER ROCKS!" picks will look like fools down the line. Who knows.

I just know that I've been watching Colts football for a while now. My family moved to Indy during Peyton's rookie season. So I've watched a lot of drafts... and I can't tell you how many times I get super pumped about our impending draft selection and then following it up with, "What?! We took WHO?! Oh come on you're kidding me!! What a (big reach, wrong position, overrated player, etc.)"

Maybe you felt that way tonight, but as you can see by the more positive comments as of late... many of us are ecstatic by this one. I can't recall the Colts landing this high-caliber of a 1st-round player besides Luck/Manning. And that is cause for hope.

Took a good paragraph on one of Ballards interviews recently so I definitely get what his vision is for us...

“We need guys defensively with speed and explosive playmaking ability, guys that can go get the ball,” Ballard said. “That’s important. Everywhere I’ve been, we’ve led the league in turnovers. In Chicago I think under Lovie [Smith] our defense was in the top five of the league every year that he was there, and then the last few years in Kansas City we’ve led the league in turnovers. And look, that was a big reason when we drafted Marcus [Peters], his ability to go get the football. Extra possessions in games, I think the average is nine, so the more possessions you could add by taking away the football is important. So the more speed you have, the more athleticism you have, guys with hands, guys that can catch the ball, guys with that can run so when the ball pops out they can get the ball, we’ve got to continue to add those type of players.”

Peppers more versatile and he can tackle. Couldn't believe they passed on Allen or Foster.

We were very fortunate to have selected from Hooker, Allen or Foster. But those other two guys have more concerning injury red-flags, and Foster has off-the-field character issues to boot. Hooker is not only safer than those two, but also has a higher ceiling. I was fine with us taking either of the 3, but wanted Hooker most. Best draft pick we've made in years!

The only people hating on this pick are the needs based draft thinkers.

True. Even then, this pick satisfies a need! Our secondary as a whole needs a complete overhaul. How does a rare ball-hawking talent with incredible range and instincts not help the secondary? There will be corners available in future rounds. But moving forward, Hooker will make all future CB additions better.

This guy doesn't seem very good as a 1st rounder to me...

"Raw and still learning nuances of the position."
    "Just one year of experience."

Uhh, if all it takes is one year of experience to make it to the NFL, I should have made it my New Year's Resolution. What exactly are you guys seeing in this pick?

I see the fact that he was a 1st-Team All-American. I see the fact that he had 7 INT's last season and took 3 of them to the house for TD's. I see that he somehow managed to standout in that loaded Ohio State secondary, with Lattimore and Conley next to him.

    I see this:

I've seen Hooker be projected as high as #2 to the 49ers (by "The Ringer"). Sports Illustrated praises him in his player profile and rates him the 9th best overall prospect. Here's Michael Lombardi declaring Hooker as one of the Top 14 players available and a Day One starter. Another article highlights Hooker's most impressive plays since he's one of the most exciting players available in the draft.

There are no guarantees in the draft, and maybe he busts. Every player has that chance. But based on the above, and considering we picked at #15... this should definitely qualify as an "exciting" pick that raises our hopes up for the future.

Dang, I thought CB was a bigger need. We got nothing beyond V. Davis at corner.

The 2nd starting corner could have been addressed.

    D. Butler or T.J. Green could have competed for that FS type position.

I know they'll draft a corner or two in later rounds but the really good guys will be gone.

    Hope this works out.

    Peace

Way too focused on positional need. This draft is very deep at corner. When a top-tier secondary talent like this luckily falls into your lap, you take the talent and run with it. Plus, it's not as if he won't drastically improve our secondary. The last time we had a top-tier ball-hawking safety, our Colts won a Super Bowl.

This pick is awesome and should give Colts fans a lot of hope for the future of our D.

There were 3 QBs taken along with 2 WRs, plus 2 RB. The only thing askew was the teams who jumped up to pick mediocre QBs. Doesn't mean something is wrong with hooker.

Exactly. We just happened to take advantage of a perfect-breaking board ahead of us. You could see it happening. Teams panicked to reach big-time on QB's and WR's. That just guaranteed that a few good defensive players were going to fall in our lap. Plus heading into the draft, nobody projected Hooker to "fall" due to any issues. In contrast to Allen/Foster, who each had pre-draft issues facilitating their fall, Hooker just happened to be the 2nd safety and 3rd overall secondary player taken.

This draft was loaded with top-tier defensive talent, and we scooped up one of those studs. Gotta love that 1st-round good luck :)

To all the people calling him incomplete and a project player, he was the number one rated FS on every mock draft board in a decent safety class (compared to Earl Thomas and Ed Reed).  Give me a freaking break.  Some people just like to be unhappy.

It's truly baffling, right? I cannot believe how much negativity is on this board. We took advantage of a bizarre early draft board and landed arguably the top secondary talent in the class. This is a great day!!

Another no-name with limited tape, limited experience (at least in the sport of football), injury history, and no tackling ability.

Beyond bummed out by this pick.

"Another no-name"? I'm guessing you have not read many mock drafts leading up to today. He has been a near-consensus Top 5-10 player overall.

To be fair, he has limited experience as a 1-year starter. I give you that. He also has an injury history. So I'm not completely disputing your post. No player is perfect, they all have flaws, and picking at #15 typically gives you a player with high-end talent and reasonable question marks. That's to be expected.

But to call him "no name"... I just wanted to maybe change your perspective on that one :)

  16. What the heck, Colts fans?! Did our fanbase have a collective really bad day today?! GOOD GRIEF PEOPLE haha. Let's happy up!! I just watched this live at Buffalo Wild Wings with my buddies & began seeing the Hooker possibility around pick #10. As it became more possible that we'd have a shot at him, my heart beat quickened. Then came pick #14, which guaranteed that we'd have our choice of Hooker, Allen or Foster. I was in shock.

Then it happened - somehow, someway we landed Malik Hooker! Woohoo!! What an amazing and surprising pick. For a franchise that has neglected its' defense for a decade, it's refreshing to see us finally select the following:

    1) A defensive STUD with a high-ceiling

    2) A consensus Top 5-10 projected player overall

    3) Arguably the best defensive player at his position

    4) Fits a position of need (our entire secondary needs overhauling, not just CB)

    5) Represents great value, rather than being a reach

Are you kidding me?! This is great!

Then I came home and was so excited to get on this forum, which I read and enjoy daily. I expected nothing but overjoyed ecstasy from our beloved Fan Forum. But boy... I sure was wrong.

Rather than feed into this bizarre and ridiculous negativity, I'm here to enjoy this pick. Today is a great day. I remember so many stupid, dumb, "reach" draft picks over the years. We've used 1st rounders on TE's, on WR's, on Bjoern Freaking Werner. Heck, we've even traded a 1st-rounder for... yep, Trent Richardson.

This pick is the OPPOSITE OF THAT. For once, you can read a Colts Draft Day article and take pride in our pick. That makes me feel really, really good. Thank you, Chris Ballard, for taking advantage of a surprising draft board and taking the best talent on the board. I cannot wait to watch him develop not only as a rookie, but throughout what will hopefully be a multi-Pro Bowl career.

    Let's go, Colts!!

  17. Well grigson won't spend but to say decker or Byrd doesn't make an immiediate impact is a bit much. Both decker and Byrd will make offense and defense better instantly.

I agree, altho Byrd is much more of an impact player than Decker. I don't mind the idea of signing Decker, as our WR corps would be truly stacked next season. However, taking that $$$ and giving it to Byrd instead would be a wise move. His impact on our D would be felt immediately. I really hope we start hearing rumors of Indy & Byrd once FA starts

  18. I'm really excited by this signing! D'Qwell is a veteran ILB who piles up tackles, is fairly durable and apparently is a good leader. Sounds like he'll fit in just fine with our locker room. He's a big upgrade over who we had and lets our young guys develop and learn. Meanwhile, Jackson & Freeman is a pretty exciting duo at ILB. I know he'll only be here for a few years, but that's one big hole filled. Good signing Grigson!

I like the fact that he's averaged 139 tackles & 3 sacks over the past three years.
