  1. With as good of a season TY had last year, and a pretty good camp and preseason this year, why can he not be our future #1?  Just curious, not saying that he should be, just want to know IYO why he can't develop into that guy.

He is the #1. Reggie is really a slot receiver and Andrew is going to over target the Hall of Fame fan Favorite again.

T.Y. will wait his turn. Reggie only caught like 49 passes in his year two. TY improves his game in year two.

The reason why he can't is if you want a dominant offense, your #1 receiver cannot be 5'9". It just isn't that intimidating or physically imposing. Reggie and Avery pulled coverage from him. If you put him up against a double team (as the #1) against a decent safety and a CB like Patrick Peterson he'll be irrelevant all day. You need size in a number 1. The closest thing to an exception I can find is Steve Smith, but even then, his offense was never really dominant, just above average. And all respect to Hilton, he probably isn't quite as good as Steve Smith was in his day. I love Hilton, but all I'm saying is his production was what it was because Reggie had to be considered by the defense, as well as the deep speed potential of Avery.

  2. Well considering what we've found in Luck....

    1) WR- Need a new bigtime playmaker to pair with Luck and Hilton over the next 5 or so years, especially once Wayne retires. It would be ideal if this new playmaker could learn from Reggie Wayne for a year.

    2) CB- In todays NFL, and despite the Toler signing, it still looms to me as a major need. We are average here. Davis has good moments, and clear lapses in sound judgement. For every big play he made last year, he got lit up for a 15 yard catch an equal number of times. Feel free to call it priority 3 or 4 instead, but I think we still need upgrading here.

    3) RB- It's been said already, and it made sense, we're a power running team with no clear stud of the future. Ballard looks to be a very capable number 2, but a Ray Rice or Jones-Drew type stud ahead of him could help take this offense to the next level.

    4) LB- I can't decide if inside or outside is a bigger priority, in large part because it depends on so many factors. Do Pagano/Grigson re-sign a trio of our current interior linebackers over the next year or so? Does our young first-rounder Werner  and/or any of our outside backer free agents develop well and provide a consistent passrush? One thing I know for sure, Mathis isn't getting any younger.

Always tough to say "most important" though. S could use upgrading for the future. DL and OL could always be MORE dominant. Obviously it would be really nice to find a 3-4 STAR on the DL. Currently we just boast a reasonably qualified group, but no bonified stars. No Haloti Ngata or J.J. Watt on this squad currently...

  3. Well I've posted it in 3 different threads now, but I'm most shocked about us waiving Nevis as opposed to any other cut, or even a couple non-cuts that seem a little curious to me. Nevis was liked by his team-mates and was making an impact on the field. Later big Drake. I kinda hope you do make a great play against us just to rub it in  ;)

  4. Agreed. wth...Kerwynn had added value as a returner too. Was younger, and hadn't let us down for four years already like Brown. I don't get it. Plus, just to make room for Jack Doyle?? We already have Fleener, Allen, and Cunningham, plus Jones on the practice squad. Not sure what we hoped to gain with Doyle over Kerwynn. I was excited to watch that kid this year too. Bummer!

  5. For me the two most surprising cuts were DL's Lawrence Guy and Drake Nevis. I was surprised by both of those.

If it were up to me, we'd have kept those two and given up on Fili Moala and Donald Brown. How long are they gonna wait for Brown to make a noticeable impact anyways?? Even when health has let him participate, he's been mostly average on the field.

I'm sorry to see Nevis and Guy go. I am happy however that Delano Howell made the roster. He was impressive throughout this preseason. Spot well earned there.

  6. Lots of teams had a good day. 49ers I hate to say have to be a top 3 draft from where I sit.

Honorable mention to the Raiders. They so rarely get to have a quality draft, and they did well in this one.

Giants, Rams, Lions, Ravens all had good drafts. Texans and Eagles too.

Vikings draft was good, but because I'm lower on WR Patterson than most I'm not pushing them to the absolute top of the heap. Their draft was solid, not spectacular.

Cardinals did alright for themselves too. Love their double RB drafting. Stepfan Taylor was probably my favorite RB in this draft. If he wasn't so similar in skill-set to Ballard I would have wanted him bad.

Honestly though, doing a top 5, no way the Colts are included on paper. Our draft was risky and leaves questions to be answered. Does Werner translate well to OLB? Do Thornton and Montori behave themselves? (both have been flagged with character issues).  Is Holmes tough enough to win a job anywhere inside? Does Boyett stay healthy?? I'm not sold on our draft at all. Favorite picks were Werner, Kerwynn Williams, Hugh Thornton in that order. Thornton is flagged as a character risk yes, but he's a real good player. Hope he wins a starting Guard spot early.

  7. Would you do it? Lets say we don't get a WR for some reason at #24.

Would you give up that 2014 1st to hop back into the top 10 of round 2 & secure a playmaker?

I'm curious to how people feel after what happened w/ Ugoh.

It all depends on how that first round shakes out, but me personally if I knew we were adding 2 starters/impact players I wouldn't hesitate. I think this team is real close & I feel we should be aggressive while we have Luck on his rookie deal.

No I wouldn't, not for any receiver in this draft. If a guy like Johnathan Hankins or Desmond Trufant were sitting there at pick 38-40 and someone would take the trade I would do it. Only legit, "safe" first round pick caliber players. And the word safe is a relative term, I get that. That's why there aren't any receivers I would do it for in this draft. There's no AJ Green in this draft.

  8. No. I saw him talking about it a couple weeks ago already. He's a family guy, he's gonna spend that day and excitement with his family. That said, the unpredictability of where he will ultimately get drafted probably played into it a little too.

If I were a draft choice, I would not attend unless I was a sure fire first rounder. Probably only 10-12 guys who truly fall into that category. Maybe 15

  9. When does he sign?..... Hopefully whenever a different team is willing to pay him. I don't want him here. I feel like there's any number of WR's in round 4 we could take this year who will add as much or more than DHB to this team. He was over-rated from the start.

  10. I reallyy doubt we draft a olb with our first pick..and i don't know how some of you guys are not sold on Erik Walden when you really haven't even seen him play yet. Stop going by the rumors you hear and give the guy a chance!

LoL. He's been playing alongside Clay Matthews and behind B.J. Raji and has maxed at 3 sacks in a year. Combine that with being charged with beating his girlfriend (she later dropped the charge), and trust me, that signing sucked. I'm giving Grigson the benefit of the doubt on overpaying every FA this year, but not for that signing. Can't forgive that.

That said. Round 1, the longer I think about it the more I love the idea of building in the trenches now that we have our franchise QB. DL Datone Jones, Johnathan Hankins, or C Barrett Jones would all be sweet at 24. There are some CB's who'd be nice selections as well. Don't have to wait too long to find out now ;)

  11. I don't know if we want people all over the world doing the TEO. I think he is a great LB but I definitely don't want that story following my team.

There's not really a story to follow. Some people won't let it go, but it's long over.

That said, the only defensive positions we are really solid at are FS and ILB, so I'd be shocked if we took him. But happy too. I think the kid's a stud. That said, we have multiple other needs in a year with a low amount of draft picks.

  12. 1- That mock is terrible

2- While I understand we need a WR to replace Reggie at some point I think our first round draft plan has to be BPA within the defensive group or O-line group. If Tavon Austin were there somehow I could see it, except he's a similar size to T.Y. We don't want to be too small in general.

I like CB Desmond Trufant, DL Johnathan Hankins, C/G Barrett Jones, or OLB/DE Alex Okafor (depends what the brass thinks on Okafor). With the signings of Toler and Landry we could potentially ignore the DB spot in round 1, but if the talent is there, we'll see. Trufant and Matt Elam are talented players worth a look.

Another poster made a good point. Cordarrelle Patterson is a big risk in the first round. He's had one year at a major school. I'd rather avoid that risk. Especially with needs all over the defensive side of the ball.

  13. It's bad, but after Luck and RG3, I don't think Kiper, Mayock, or McShay had one teams pick right the rest of the draft last year.

So, if they're clueless, who's to say what's right?

Last year me and a buddy who watched the draft together were trying to predict pick by pick. I beat him by 1 in round 1. I think it was 7-6. The first two I obviously got. I called Chandler Jones to the Pats, Kirkpatrick to the Bengals, and I don't remember what else.

  14. Really interesting, but I do wonder about how that site develops their methods. Example: Mario Manningham has one of the best catch percentages by their criteria. Can that possibly be right?? Eli stopped throwing to him because he couldn't rely on him. Now he's top 5 in catching.....something's fishy...

And one of their O-line stats had our pass blocking at 18th in the league. The fact it was any higher than 24th had me wondering, to say the least.

  15. Oh you were on the phone while they were negotiating prices??

Not exactly. But I did hear plenty about his negotiations with Detroit. They didn't have the dough, which is why it never seemed like he'd stay there. And sure enough, he's gone.

  16. God, i hope not. But I'm sure grigs knows what he's doing

I used to agree. This Walden signing sucks though. He likes to beat his girlfriend. Look it up. I just don't appreciate that we suddenly are willing to sacrifice character for production. Add to that his production is debatable. But we paid him like he's proven something. Call me crazy, but I'd rather miss the playoffs than bring in guys like Walden. I hate that signing. The other 4 yesterday (5 counting Butler) were good though.

  17. I am upset we settled so quickly for Walden while Avril is just sitting on the market for the taking..

I've heard this complaint several times. I don't understand everyone's fascination with Cliff Avril. He wants $10 million per year first of all. And he's only played in a 4-3. For those who haven't noticed we don't run a 4-3 anymore. I have zero interest in Avril, much like Grigson and co.......and apparently a lot of other teams. That's the problem for Avril, he's worth 5.5-8 mill, but wants 10. That's why no one is biting.
