Thought we tackled better with Flus also. Not that I'm clamoring for him to be back.

My belief is we had better players who knew how to tackle.  DC don’t coach in that detail.  That’s what position coaches do.

One of the poll questions in the game thread tomorrow involves who fans want for defensive coordinator next year. I would like to hear some suggestions tomorrow.

I want Robert Saleh but I don’t think that’s happening.

He is Al Golden. He was the Linebackers Coach of the Bengals before being hired by Notre Dame. So, he has experience in the NFL.

Good choice...

Thx for clarifying. Was a little bit lazy to Google his name.😅

Honestly what’s the point?  There are two actives threads on this subject full of suggestions.  Why go there again in a game thread?

I think we could get him next year. Same system but I think he may be a bit more creative than Gus

I’d sooner bring Curtis Painter out of retirement and give him a 20 yr fully guaranteed contract to be our QB1 before I’d even pick up the phone for Eberflus

True….  But the DC can tell the position coaches what techniques to emphasize during practice.   The DC oversees what his position coaches do.

Just don't put him in charge of time outs /clock management lol

That was on Williams. He gets up and throws a 10 harder and Flus calls a time out. That was on the qb and, not the coach. U keep the last time out hoping your qb gets the play off and throws  a pass. U call a time out with like 5 seconds on the clock. Then u have time for a field goal.

Why don't we hire a good defensive coordinator instead?

I want Saleh(if we are keeping this GM and scheme). I think he will have plenty of interest around the league and I doubt he picks us, but...

How do you feel about a guy who runs the same scheme (for the most part), is just as conservative, and has the added bonus of already knowing our team and personnel really well? His name is Gus Bradley.

I'm not convinced we make a change. Or put another way, I'm not getting my hopes up.

By the way, while Saleh has had some nice defenses, he's also had much better personnel than the Colts have to offer. He also blitzes less than Bradley, just something for everyone to keep in mind.

Yep, none of this is ideal, but I am like... 99% certain that the low blitz rate, rush 4, take away deep threats is the prerequisite for Ballard to want you as a DC. This is not a bug. This is a feature of the defenses Ballard wants. So yeah... I think for as long as Ballard is our GM, I think our defense won't be blitzing much.

Agreed Saleh has had some good/better personnel... but also, it's good to see him value some positions that Ballard doesn't seem to value much(outside corner) and my hope would be he would actually push for us to pursue shut down type corner. Hell... I kind of want us to go after Sauce... use his fall from grace this season and get low price tag on him if possible...

You make a good point about positional focus, and maybe that would have bring some benefits. But I won't hold my breath on that one either. Especially not the Sauce factor...

I don't think Ballard's preference includes a no-blitz mandate, but the scheme is meant to work with a low blitz rate, play coverage, don't get beat deep. And unlike a lot of people, I don't think blitzing automatically makes the defense better. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with a low blitz rate, or with this scheme. Bradley is just super predictable, whether we're being conservative or more aggressive. There was a play on Sunday where Blackmon tried to time up a blitz, and he showed it way before the Pats had to snap the ball, so the rookie QB was able to catch it, they made a simple protection adjustment and nullified it. That's a Bradley problem, not a scheme problem.

It feels like most of blitzes don't him home for this reason under Bradley.

    • I hope he can last till the Colts pick.
    • The more I consider it, the more concerned I get.  When I look at the first year statistical comparisons that I posted earlier, Mitchell looks a whole lot more like Phillip Dorsett than he does anyone else.   Mitchell - 13 games | 7 starts | 20 catches on 45 targets (44.4%) | 254 yds | 0 TD's | 19.5 yds/game Downs - 17 games | 9 starts | 68 catches on 98 targets (69.4%) | 771 yds | 2 TD's | 45.4 yds/game Pittman - 13 games | 8 starts | 40 catches on 51 targets (65.6%) | 503 yds | 1 TD | 38.7 yds/game Moncrief - 16 games | 2 starts | 32 catches on 49 targets (65.3%) | 444 yds | 3 TD's | 27.8 yds/game Hilton - 15 games | 1 start | 50 catches on 90 targets (55.6%) | 861 yds | 7 TD's | 57.4 yds/game Dorsett - 11 games | 0 starts | 18 catches on 39 targets (46.2%) | 225 yds | 1 TD | 20.5 yds/game Wayne - 13 games | 9 starts | 27 catches on 49 targets (55.1%) | 345 yds | 0 TD's | 26.5 yds/game
    • As we go through our discussions and observations for Richardson, we've mostly used two quarterbacks as comparison:  Josh Allen (for his early inaccuracy, strong arm, and ability to run) and Cam Newton (for his imposing physicality and strong arm). There's one other quarterback that I feel needs to be in the conversation: Justin Fields Through his career in Chicago, he was a phenomenon running the ball.  He ran for over 1100 yards in 2022!  But he had a lot less success throwing the ball.  So much so that the team finally decided to move on from him after only 3 seasons. I'm not saying "Richardson is exactly like Fields".  But I am saying that the comparison has merit, and bears watching.
    • I implore you to go back and watch the tape from his first 2 seasons. His accuracy was woeful.
    • Nice. I’ve heard people say they think he’s a 1st round caliber corner. I hope he goes to the Senior Bowl.
