If you ask them, perfect season or SB win, you know what they will take. Ask the 18-1 Patriots. It takes so much out of you, going for an undefeated season. Besides, those Patriots were winning games by double digits consistently and these Chiefs have been squeaking out wins barely, not the same offensive stratosphere.

In 2006 we started 9-0, when we lost to go to 9-1 nobody on the team cared because it was about trying to win a SB. Peyton hadn't won one yet. Eventually we figured it would come down to us vs the Pats in the playoffs and it did. We won and beating the Bears was pretty easy. It's about the Ring.

Dolphins can say 17-0 in 1972 but anyone with any common sense knows they weren't the greatest team ever. Steelers (1978) were better in that era and so was the Cowboys (1977). Steelers and Cowboys both had no weaknesses, great defenses and Hall of Fame QB's by a mile.

But the Dolphins did what the Cowboys and Steelers could not. That makes them kings. You can have a team with some five star players and still fall to not so good teams. Happens every year except in 1972.

You have to keep in mind the difference between then and now.

Players stayed and teams had long term teams playing together.  There were so many non competitive teams league wide compared to today's NFL.

Dolphins had the greatest team accomplishment in 1972 going 17-0 but greatest team overall, nah. I have been watching since the 1977 season and vaguely even remember the 1976 season when I was 5 years old watching it live. Once I got a little older, the more I knew about the 1972 Dolphins and their roster. IMO, teams that were better in that ERA were the 1984 49ers, 1978 Steelers, 1977 Cowboys, 1983 Raiders, 1982 Redskins in that order. All those teams had much more talent. Those teams didn't go undefeated but were better.

Then once you get into the mid 80's teams up until now, the athletes have simply been better, stronger, faster, and the game is so advanced now. The 1985 Bears, 1989 49ers, and 1995 Cowboys would pretty easily beat the 1972 Dolphins. Going recent teams = Teams like the 2006 Colts, 2014 Patriots, 2019 Chiefs were better too. Imagine players back in the early 70's trying to cover Kelce and Hill and trying to contain Mahomes Homer Simpson Laughing GIF by FOX TV

The competition between today's teams dwarf what teams were back in the day.

Today's players are not interested in building teams because they are after their brands and making the most amount of money.  Used to see these games played like the opponent was the enemy.  Now it's all lovey dovey.

That holds true in every comparison. Today's game is not the game even a few years back. Apples & oranges but what remains is the fact the undefeated season was a compilation of everyone in the Dolphins organization at all levels and that is why it is going to be a very long time before anyone can claim the same. The records can't be put in a time machine. As for the competition level I would argue that does not change. There a bundle of low performing teams right now.

One cannot compare teams of difference generations because where does it stop, 1930 ,1940? It is like calling a team that beat a bottom dweller not great but they did not make the schedule, they beat whoever they play good and bad. How would Jim Brown perform against todays athletes? Would DiMaggio's record stand up against today's pitchers? Linemen looked more like bar room beer guzzlers compared to todays athletic players and in truth most of them were. Google Art Donavon's interviews or the drinking habits of Bobby Lane for example.

Art Donavon is a story lmao . He drink a case a beer a day . I get it, it is tough to compare era's but a team like the 78 Steelers is from that same era and IMO by my eye test, that Steelers team were better than the 72 Dolphins.

That can never be proven though I would not argue it except for the W-L record being the only proof. 49ers fans might want to jump in here.:lecture: (This discussion is closed to Cowboys fans)

84 49ers went 18-1, only loss was by 3 points that season at Pittsburgh I think.

3 more games a season makes it even less likely.
