Do you see any progress with Richardson?

It’s sad really.  I feel bad for the rest of the team.  We averaged 30 points a game last season with Minschew.  Now we are in the teens.  This offense is easily capable of putting up 30 but is being held back by a developmental quarterback.  All we can do is hope he improves to give the team a chance at more victories.  This is a playoff team with a good quarterback.  We just have to hope he figures it out.

If you listen to players they all have mentioned about having to go through growing growing pains with a young QB. You can hear them in the locker room after Anthony talks yelling we got you or something like that. It’s just part of the procedd. At least he isn’t 25 like will Levis making dumb decisions.

No we didn't, lol. 396 points scored. 17 games played. That's 23.3 ppg. Not even close.

We have to keep this in perspective that this was one of his worst games w.r.t his mechanics, IMO, that I have seen. You have to average it out over the course of the season where there will be games where his decision making and feet will show him to be more comfortable, just the law of averages.

So, the variability i.e. beta / risk will be higher this season and the goal is that it will be lower by the end of the season and start hitting a good floor next season, at least that is how I am reasoning with it. Jalen Hurts, despite all his sufficient starting prowess in college, still took till Year 3 to show the big jump. AR might be a better athlete than Hurts and bigger arm but Hurts started getting more accurate around Year 3, and they never shied away from Hurts' running game being an active part of the offense. AR's arm, his runs, his accuracy, Steichen's usage, ARE ALL EVOLVING.

The NFLPA limits what they can do at team facilities, which is a big part of these QBs seeking outside help outside the confines of the franchise facilities too for mechanics development/corrections, let us keep that in mind.

I agree.  I thought his mechanics were really bad yesterday.

One thing that is concerning to me is that if you look at Caleb Williams, he started off the game really rough and looked terrible.

But as the game went on he started to improve.  Late in the game, his one TD in the endzone was a very nice tight window throw. He showed very nice touch.

I came away a bit impressed.

I would love it if AR could make a tight window throw like that.  I think it would give fans some hope.

I have seen him hit it to Ogletree and Downs, but that was LAST YEAR. It is a game to game league, and just hoping it will all magically come back is still what it is, a HOPE but at least it is based on reality. :)

Due respect, I just don’t understand posts like this. You think there are Colts fans who hate AR and want to see him fail. What posts say this? Who says this?

Yes. Yes I do. There are some on here and on other forms of social media that want him to fail so that they're proven correct in their evaluation of him.

This is correct.

It's easier to say "Well, everybody has to be patient and give him the time and latitude to fix these deficiencies in his game" than it is to actually....be patient and give him the time and latitude to fix these deficiencies in his game.

What exactly did everybody think that was going to look like...if it wasn't something like what we saw yesterday?

Two things everybody needs to not lose sight of as we pull our hair out watching him play:

1) To this point, he's had the right attitude about it.  There's no guarantee he'll continue having the right attitude.  And it won't help him maintain it if fan sentiment boils over to the point where things just fall apart.  And I very much believe fan sentiment can cause that to happen.

2) There is no quick, easy fix.  And that includes benching AR for Flacco.  Are we a better team with Flacco on the field right now?  Maybe.  Probably.  But is that really in the best interest of the franchise?  I don't think so.  AR needs reps....even if those reps end up costing us winnable games.  Personally, I think they're worth it.  Because Joe Flacco is not a long-term alternative.  There are no ready long-term alternatives....except another swipe at another QB prospect next year in the draft.

So I think everybody just needs to relax as much as possible.  And the coaching staff needs to make the space available for AR to progress....and that means taking as much pressure off his shoulders as possible.

Just to be clear, I’m a big AR supporter and I hope he’s the franchise QB for years to come.

The reason I started this topic was to ask if others think he’s progressing.   To me, it’s obvious that he doesn’t look as good as he did last year against the Rams.  But I guess the progression (IMHO) should be viewed from game one this season on, taking into account his injury time off.

A few here have made great points, on both sides of the coin.  Only time is going to tell.

I didn’t realize it until I read a previous poster but Williams threw for 363 yards 33/57 58% that’s a bit more than a bit impressive to me lol

I agree 100% with those who say Richardson needs to keep playing and that we should all have expected this would be a developmental year. At the same time, I'm concerned with what we've seen so far this season. Have you ever seen an NFL quarterback who misses short and intermediate targets by as much as Richardson sometimes does - or who is off-target as often? How much that can be improved is a huge question.

As others have said, the way the Colts are using Richardson, he isn't much of a running threat, either. Will Levis outrushed Anthony Richardson 36 yards to 24 yards yesterday. That's a surprise to me. I don't think AR can consistently succeed that way.

The miss to Pittman may be the worst throw I've ever seen.   Having said that,  he needs to keep playing.   Pulling him for Flacco won't help the future

Statistically he regressed compared to last season, Bowen gave the stats on his podcast today. My eyes agree, as it seams is the consensus here. The staff can and should gameplan more towards his strengths but until Richardson consistently hits the gimme’s the offense will struggle.

This right here! This could’ve been worked on last season instead of putting him out there day 1

We heard early in camp that he was having difficulty with his accuracy on the 7 on 7’s and could not hit the broadside of a barn door. That was the key indicator that he will need playing time to get better. It really can’t get worse this week after the last 2 showings, it won’t. He’s a pitcher who is wild, you have to keep running him out there win or lose. He will be running for his life this week against this defense. He seems to play free when he has an attitude, hopefully somebody gets in his ear from the Steelers and he plays to his strengths.

It's not that clear on who is playing better, is it?

Richardson 49.3% completions, 583 yards, 3 TDs, 6 INTs, 55.9 rating

Levis 68.1% completions, 579 yards, 4 TDs, 5 INTs, 76.5 rating

The big difference is that Richardson is 22 and Levis is 25.

Stats don't tell the whole story. Levis has cost his team by turning the ball over at crucial times. I mean pick 6's too.

Everyone  is out rushing Richardson  even mahomes.  He is being used wrong. I feel like they may have rushed him back too soon. They should have started flacco the first half of the season while  working with Richardson  to clean up his mechanics then put him in later in the year.

I guess we have to accept this is an evaluation season.  The defense is below average, so this team isn’t going far (IMHO) unless AR turns it around fast.

The progress that I see is that the coaches haven't bench him yet and I don't see it happening this year. Although he is struggling, he cleans up his accuracy and you will see a big jump in his play. I expect the interceptions to continue but accuracy is really what he needs to work on.  I dont think the Colts will coddle him and will continue to put him in situations where he will have to make good decisions. Rip of the bandage and let him go!!!

It's said that the two biggest indicators for a QB is their completion percentage and their yards per attempt.

Although the sample size is too small to make any solid analysis, you could say that his earlier games had better completion percentage, but his later games had better yards per attempt.

I think overall he's struggling this year, probably because he's spent his offseason rehabbing rather than improving.  He's playing wild, relying on athleticism rather than on mechanics.  Let's hope he settles down and finds some balance.

Not trying to make AR out to be Allen. I just want to point out that Allen had to go through EXACTLY the same thing AR is going through right now and if the Bills had given up they'd have lost out on a franchise QB.

I will say to the general assembly on here:

It could be much worse.

The Jags paid Lawrence record money. They extended him. And all they have to show for it is a 4th year veteran QB who was a 1st overall consensus once in a generation pick. And he’s completing 50% of his passes and looking genuinely bad.

4 years in folks. 4 years in.

The Browns paid Watson record money. He’s since done absolutely nothing for two years.

The Broncos paid Wilson record money. And now they’re paying him to sit on the bench and not even play in Pittsburgh.

Pretty amazing to have won the game with a qb rating of 39. I imagine that has not happened more than once in league history????

Minshew was a veteran qb with nfl starts under his belt who was considered by some to be the best backup in the league. Minshew also had the luxury of facing a nearly last place schedule. Every year this is a "playoff" team according to some on this board yet Ballard gets an 8 yr pass of subpar results based on wins, division titles and playoff runs but AR only gets 7 games?! As a matter of fact The Athletic just ran an article about the Colts being in a hamster wheel of mediocrity under Ballard so I'm not putting that nonsense of AR is holding this "playoff" team back. Did you see the defense week 1 and 2? Lol We got a win against a bad offensive Bears team that was ranked last in the rushing department while being led by a rookie qb whose also been sporadic.

AR is the youngest starting qb in the league at 22. It has also been reported that he has less than 40 starts under his belt including hs!! Let that sink in... Caleb Williams is the 2nd youngest qb at 22 but had 33 starts in college alone while also receiving a Heisman. AR spent the offseason rehabbing from shoulder surgery so some of the progress gained before injury probably took a step back. The guy has 7 nfl starts so it's way too early to tell if his raw talent can be developed into a franchise qb. All involved from Irsay on down knew that this would take some time and not be judged off a few games so be prepared for the ups as well as the downs.

AR is struggling bigitime but management not getting him a decent TE was a terrible decision.  First off, TE's are a big part of the NFl passing game today but they also keep the chains and drives moving. Not to mention, they are a safety blanket for any young QB. Hard to find a successful young QB today or really any QB without a solid TE. IMO, there is no doubt AR's transition is easier with a solid TE that can actually stop in holes and always give his QB his chest for a 5 yard gain plus or beat LBers man to man .. It was ridiculous going into this season without making sure that happened and chances are AR will see a lot of zone because of his running ability and that's where smart solid TE's can kill a defense. Doesn't fix AR's accuracy problems but I believe it makes his transition wayyyy easier because they are easy throws and reads. Perspective...Our starting TE's have a total of 4 CATCHES in 3 games. They are on pace for 20 combined cacthes by all 3 TE's for the season....Just can't happen in todays NFL especially with a young QB. It's just as much on SS as anybody because he should know better. He coached Herbert his rookie year, TE's had over 80 catches.......... SS coached Hurts his first full year, TE's had over 80 cacthes. See a pattern here?

I’m willing to give him the benefit the doubt this year in lieu of his shoulder injury last year, and just lack of experience in general.

I’ll start to get nervous late season if he makes zero improvement.  This is probably the most nightmare schedule in terms of just constantly going up against very tough defenses.  Pitts, TN twice, Jets, Bills, Lions, Broncos, Jags D always plays the colts tough😬…..

AR has achieved less 60% passing, not good enough.  He's not picking up as fast as we thought, a lot of inaccuracies in his throws, not reading defenses too well.  Can you afford to ride with him for several years, this means no playoffs for a while....

More like 23 a game but Mustache did have a good season overall.

This is not true at all. He reads defenses just fine. He is going to the right spot with the ball.  Just let the kid settle down.

There  is way too much over analyzing this. Maybe he just had a bad couple games. Let it play out.
