In other news, ex-Colt QB Jacob Eason cut by Packers

Recommended Posts

The Packers cut QB Jacob Eason on Friday.  They'd signed him as a "just in case" scenario, in case contract talks with Jordan Love didn't go well.  Now that they have, they don't need Eason anymore.

Jacob Eason was drafted in the 4th round of the 2020 draft by the Colts (2/34 WR Michael Pittman Jr; 2/41 RB Jonathan Taylor; 3/85 Julian Blackmon; 4/122 QB Jacob Eason).

He was released by the Colts the following year, during the tumultuous 2021 season, and has bounced around the league ever since, serving stints in Carolina, San Francisco, Seattle, and recently on the Giants practice squad.

I liked his big arm strength and poise, but he never could make his reads quickly enough, and eventually failed at attaining a starting job as an NFL quarterback.  At age 26, he still has a chance to make an NFL roster.  But it looks like that starting job thing has passed him by.  Too bad.

Eason was a camp arm. You need  3 QBs to run practice in camp. Never signed him as a "just in case."J-Love was at practice every day. Just missed a few days practicing while finishing up getting his contract done. And if you think Eason was the #2 QB for the few days he was here, you are mistaken. He was never even considered for being in front of Clifford, and Pratt. The actual backup QBs in Green Bay.

He was a big time recruit going into college with all the tools. Played well his freshman year but I believe an injury cost him the starting job to Stetson Bennett so he transferred from Georgia to Washington. Was part of one of the craziest endings in the 2016 Tennessee vs Georgia game where he threw a perfect Hail Mary down the sideline to put Georgia up with less than a minute. UT threw another bomb as time expired to win it.  I believe it was reported that he entered Washington not knowing the playbook even after sitting an entire year bc of transferring.

Players like him get brought into the NFL all the time bc they have all the physical tools to play in the NFL. Unfortunately for them, that is not enough bc the mental aspect is just as important. I remember people clamoring on this board about him and I kept saying there is a greater chance he will be out of the league in 5 years than playing for anyone, let alone starting.

Eason is on Sam's level. #3 at best. I actually would rather have Sam.

Hey there, PackersNation.  I never got to welcome you when you came on the site.

You are correct.  I never believed Eason was #2 in Packers camp, and anybody who would believe it is delusional.  I was quoting a story that I saw on Yahoo, in the way that they said it.  To be fair, they didn't actually say that he was #2 either.  But national sports guys don't always get the nuance of what is happening locally, and they don't always write what they write clearly.  They saw that he was in camp, saw that he was released shortly after Love got his extension, made their inference, got their clicks for their story, and moved on.  You are obviously closer to the situation than I or they are.  And get it in a way that we don't.

For myself, I remember being pleased when Eason was drafted.  Certainly, it was a shot in the dark for Ballard.  Eason was at Georgia, got injured, and replaced by a lesser quarterback that struck gold, made magic, and was obviously going to be the starter the following year.  So Eason took his strong arm home to Washington, linked up with a couple of really good receivers, and made a statistical splash.  Without actually winning enough games to be in the championship conversation.  So...  yeah.  In 2020, Ballard brought in Phillip Rivers as the Sure Thing that was close to the end of his career, and rolled the dice that Eason could find what was missing, and become the Next Thing.  I was rooting for that to happen.  Unfortunately, both for us and for him, it never did.

Anyway, welcome to the site!  And go Pack!

Thank you for the welcome!..there are a few here that claim I am "confrontational." I am glad you don't share that sentiment.

Yeah when Wentz got injured in 2021, he played against the Rams. It was brief.

Let me qualify this by saying I really like Ballard as a GM.

But that was a prime example of Ballard's hubris.  They must have known Eason couldn't play QB in the NFL.  They obviously knew of Wentz's injury history.

I was at that Rams game where they trotted him out to try to win the game when Carson got hurt.  You could sense the deer in the headlights from the 600 sections.

Then later in the season when Wentz could hardly walk they still started him because they had no other option.

Pryor/Pinter...and now the Safety room (and maybe the CB room).  Hubris is the kindest word I can use.

Okay, another Smonroe rant.../over.

Yeah that was a bad look for Eason. I remember posting in here, the kid has a chance of a lifetime here, then he gets picked.

He wasn't brought in to be anything of any significance. Eason was brought to be a camp arm for a few days because they needed 3 QBs to run practice. What do you not understand?

The OP said that Eason was brought in "just in case contract talks with J-Love didn't go well." First, there never was a concern that the contract wouldn't be done in a few days. "We are close"  Gute said after J-Love didn't practice the first day. And Jordan was in all the meetings and at practice everyday. He wasn't holding out.

And second, Eason was never a backup plan or a "just in case" QB of any kind.

John Hammonds agreed that I was correct, and that he was quoting a story from Yahoo, that was most likely misleading. It was all good and done with.

Yes, of course Eason has no real shot at being a starting QB in the NFL at this point. He has as many starts in the NFL as I do. Zero.

No worries...if it's about the Packers, you can pretty much guarantee I know what I am talking about.

But it's always enjoyable to read Colts fans perspective on the Pack.

I also realize this thread was started because Jacob Eason was drafted by the Colts and some here may have somewhat of an affinity for him.

    • If I remember rumors from that season he was way down colts list. Colts could not get the guys they wanted to come here.   i think Bradley is a good coach but his scheme does not work anymore. You can’t rely on just pass rush anymore when QB are as mobile as they are today. They aren’t statues anymore.
    • I thought it made sense to keep Bradley in 2023. Steichen was hired late in the cycle, and had to put together his offensive staff. He and Bradley also had a history, so I wasn't surprised.   I was highly disappointed that they kept him in 2024, especially with how quickly and assertively Steichen endorsed the decision to keep him.    But I will say, while I don't think he had a great gameplan in Week 1, he did do some things that he's been mostly hesitant to do in the past, including early blitzes. And we only gave up one big play in the passing game. So maybe he'll dig into his bag more often this year. But my optimism is very muted, because he still did a bunch of things that I think hold the defense back -- mostly Cover 3 with no disguise, soft coverage, etc.
    • Yeah it's unfortunate the most succesful players we've had in the secondary have been FAs.   I do think Blackmon has developed into a good player. Not elite, but a good player. His biggest drawback really is the constant threat of injury.
    • Well Judge will be a first ballot hall of famer...if AR has that type of career, id settle for that . But he was obviously comparing size and athletic ability.
    • It was obvious, what Bradley brings to the table, after watching him for an entire season in 2022. Yet the Colts, when they were hiring new coaches in 2023, elected to retain Gus (along with his entire staff)  It's foolish to have expected different results, in Steichen's first year, yet alone now, going into year two.
