2024 NFL Hall of Fame Class

Congratulations to this year's Hall of Fame class:

Julius Peppers

Dwight Freeney

Devin Hester

Andre Johnson

Patrick Willis

Steve McMichael (senior candidate)

Randy Gradishar (senior candidates)

I'm surprised that Antonio Gates did not make it. I thought he was a shoo-in to be voted in on the first ballot. Maybe next year.

I was not expecting Andre Johnson to get in that quickly. However, everyone is well-deserving. I'm glad that Willis was not punished for retiring early, during his prime. He was a great player.

There seems to be a bit of a Texans bias in general this year.  Johnsons numbers are pretty similar to Wayne’s and actually Wayne’s are a bit better plus he’s been retired longer.

Johnson- 1062 receptions, 14,185 yards and 70 TD’s in 14 seasons

Wayne- 1070 receptions, 14,345 yards, 82 TD’s also in 14 seasons

unless he’s being penalized for having Manning and Luck

I'm not just surprised that Antonio Gates didn't get in, I'm utterly shocked! He's got the most touchdown receptions of any Tight End in NFL history, 5 ahead of Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez in 1 fewer season and he's #7 All Time in that category, the 6 above him (Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Cris Carter, Marvin Harrison & Larry Fitzgerald, all Hall of Famers with the exception of Fitzgerald who will be eligible next year) were all Wide Receivers!

Whoever didn't vote for Antonio should lose their privileges, the only advantage that I can think of that Gates had over Gonzalez is that Antonio had back-to back future Hall of Fame quarterbacks throwing to him in Drew Brees & Philip Rivers, where as the only potential HOF QB that Tony had was Matt Ryan at the end of his career, and there's no guarantee that Matt gets in.

Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers will both get in, probably not 1st ballot though. IMO, both have an argument to being a top 25 QB of all-time. Matt won an League MVP and won an NFC Title (2016) + had great seasons in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Rivers by my eye test, was a hair better than Ryan or it was even, no MVP's but he always had either Brady, Peyton, or Ben to deal with in that Conference. River's longevity, Durability, smarts as a QB, and Stats gets him in. He also made a Championship Game playing on 1 leg.

Not Matt Ryan. Rivers most likely will but not first ballot. I hope he gets in. He is one of my favorite QBs. :)

Philip should get in on his 1st ballot, he won't be up against either Big Ben or Eli, (unless he gets snubbed on his 1st try) and he's got better statistics than the both of them. Eli will come eligible the year before Rivers, he's a Manning with 2 SB MVPs so he'll get in with his .500 career record, and when Philip comes up the following year with superior stats, it'll be hard to justify keeping him out. Roethlisberger will get in on the strength of his 3 Superbowl appearances with 2 wins.

Matt Ryan is a Hall of Famer, he was better than Joe Namath on any measuring stickchuckling homer simpson GIF. He just didn't wear Fur Coats and Pantyhose lmao . If it wasn't for the worse coaching of all-time, Ryan would even be a SB winner.

I am more lenient than others:

There are a lot of people that think Namath, and already Eli, Rivers, and Ryan don't belong. I think they all do for several reasons. Namath because of SB 3, it changed history so that gets him in. Eli's team beat Tom Brady's team twice in the SB, one change history = 2007. Rivers and Ryan, I already gave my reasons.

The next few years will be a referendum on how much weight Superbowl rings carry in Hall of fame selections, compared to QBs of the past - there are currently 5 QBs in the Superbowl era without rings in Canton (Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, Warren Moon, Jim Kelly & Dan Marino) and Philip Rivers has more passing yards & touchdown passes than each of them so if he is denied, it will be questionable at best.

At the time of Joe Namath, he was a Hall of Famer. If he played today and had the same stats, he would not be a Hall of Famer.

I believe if Matt Ryan is a Hall of Famer, then almost every fairly successful QB will be in the Hall of Fame. If Matt Ryan is voted for enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, then Carson Palmer, Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford, Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson, and maybe even Kirk Cousins and Cam Newton would all deserve to make the Hall of Fame. I think they are all the level of Matt Ryan, though some may be better. None are guaranteed to make the Hall of Fame though some will if they add to their numbers.

I think Big Ben, Brees, and Brady are first ballot Hall of Famers. I don't think Eli should be voted in, but he will get in because of his two Super Bowl wins and being a Manning.

I think out of the QBs you mentioned, only Matt Stafford has an argument to being as great as Ryan was. I would take Ryan over Palmer, Goff, Dak, Cousins, and even Wilson all day at their peaks.

Good to see 2 former Colts get in, definitely think Reggie should be in as well but I'm positive it is coming soon.  Also think former Colts Rivers and Mathis make it,like others not sure where Matt Ryan falls, will be a close call. Obviously much better career then namath but can say that about 200 other QBS as well. Super Bowl loss wasnt all on matt but some recall it that way.

Check out their stats. Their careers are similar. Ryan, Stafford, Wilson and Goff all have similar stats. Rivers has slightly better stats (40 more TDs than Ryan in 10 more games). Dak is on pace to have similar stats to Rivers. Wilson and Stafford won Super Bowls; Ryan and Rivers did not. Dak and Goff have not.

Andre Johnson played 42 less games than Reggie Wayne. That means his average yards and TDs per game were much better in less games, and it was still close. If Andre played 42 more games, his stats would have been much better than Reggies. That's not even discussing the differences at QB between the two.

Congrats to Dwight Freeney for getting in the HOF! Glad someone on the Colts was recognized this year!

Only QB that has a League MVP out of all of them is Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan won MVP when Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers were at the top of their game as well. Matt Stafford is pretty equal to Ryan I will give you that, same for Rivers. Dak, Palmer, Wilson, and Goff = no thanks if you can give me Ryan. Put 2016 Matt Ryan on the Lions this year and the Lions win the NFC. They would have beat the 49ers IMO. When Wilson won his SB, he wasn't even the best offensive player on his team, it was Beast and Seattle had an all-time great defense. Wilson has never even came close to winning an MVP.

I saw Steve Mc Michael in an airport many years ago and I thought "he's not so big". Later I saw him on the phone in one of those wall mounted phones with a shield on each side and he looked like a brown bear trying to fit in to a sardine can.

True, Matt Ryan at his peak had plenty of velocity to go with his accuracy.

Too bad he was fading fast when he got to us. Just like Peyton was in his last year with the Broncos. The difference, Matt Ryan didn’t have a 2015 Broncos D to get pick sixes and defensive scoring for him.

Yeah, Gates not being a first ballot Hall of Famer is mind blowing. Maybe, the NBA will show him the respect he deserves and vote him into their Hall of Fame, being he played basketball in college, not football.

That would have to be NCAA then :)
