PFF Scores week 14

Solid84

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to be posting any grades save maybe just a few on stand-out players.

I'll try to rank grades as follows:

  • Elite 90+
  • Great 80-89
  • Good 70-79
  • Above Average 65-69
  • Average 56-64
  • Below Average 50-55
  • Bad <50

For reference the baseline grade is 60.0 - the average. To make it easier for me I've made some PFF-grade intervals for each of the above categories (see above). Fewer grades under average because once you get into that area under "Below average" there's not much point in grading it - it's just not good enough.

Stand-out performances week 14:

These are premium grades. I'll post links to where they can be found. If you find these PFF grades as interesting as me I highly recommend you subscribe.

First off, honorable mentions to: Josh SillsAdetomiwa Adebawore and Cameron McGrone who all did well on limited snaps.

Michael Pittman - Overall 83.5 - 55 total snaps (42 Rec, 13 Rblk) - 0 penalties. (Receiving)

-- Passing - 75.7 - Made 26/39 throws for 240 yards (667% completion. 76.3% Adjusted), 1 TD, 1 INT, ADOT 6.3, No big time throws, No turnover worthy plays, No batted passes (first time in 8 weeks!!!), Receivers credited with 3 drops, 7 of 39 Dropbacks under pressure (17.95%), Time to throw 2.47.

-- Running - 65.4 - 1 Carry for 5 yards

-- Run defense - 61.8

-- Passrush - 80.5 - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries.

-- Coverage - 71.0 - Gave up 7/8 targets for 99 yards (14.1 Y/REC), Gave up 2 TDs, 1 Pass breakup.

Out best guy was Pittman. Seems this is about a routine performance from him. Good as always. Our next guys up were 3 guys on limited snaps. Then 3 defenders and Minshew (which I don't agree with).

Comments on grades for Offense, Defense and ST, week 14

Seeing as the cats out of the bag on week 1-3 grades (my bad), I'll keep them here and make comments on the latest game.

Offense -  (week3/week2/week 1)

(55.2/74.7/53.1) - Overall Offense

Week 14 - Above Average - We moved the ball, but killed our drives with penalties.

(49.3/80.6/49.2) - Passing

Week 14 - Good - Our receivers had 3 drops but I don't really feel Minshew deserves this grade even considering that.

(65.3/70.9/68.3) - Pass blocking

Week 14 - Good - Raimann got pushed around a lot by Hendrickson, I guess blocking was okay beyond that?

(62.3/63.2/57.1) - Receiver routes

Week 14 - Average - Pretty standard performance at this point. Grades have been pretty consistent in this category over the season.

(61.4/67.4/38.8) - Run game

Week 14 - Average - No open lanes for Moss.

(45.4/82.9/62.3) - Run blocking

Week 14 - Average - 4th worst Run blocking performance of the season. Oline got nothing done here, but the Bengals sat on the run.

Feels like Pittman carried the day again with little to no help from the rest of the offense.

Defense - (week3/week2/week 1)

(57.7/62.3/78.9) - Overall Defense

Week 14 - Above Average - Let down by an atrocious Run defense and BAD Tackling.

(43.1/74.4/83.4) - Run defense

Week 14 - Good - Grover back helped, but they still got too many yards. Dline had some good plays here though.

(39.0/51.8/66.4) - Tackling

Week 14 - Above Average - I feel tackling was bad again, but this is actually our 2nd best tackling performance of the season according to PFF. Not sure I agree.

(67.4/72.5/73.3) - Passrush

Week 14 - Average - Zero pressure. Zip, nada, zilch, nothing.

(62.1/50.0/66.2) - Coverage

Week 14 - Average - I feel Browning did as he pleased?

Special Teams - (week3/week2/week 1)

(54.7/69.8/78.3) - Special Teams

Week 14 - Average - Left 4 points on the field and muffed a punt. Would've expected lower here.

A little all over the place it seems. Our TEs had more targets than they've had in any game all season (12). Unfortunately only Mallory got a lot done. Moss had another bad game. Downs have had 3 forgetable games in a row now.

Like last week the DIs had a terrible game besides Buckner. Especially the Run defense was atrocious. Paye had a good game as did Lewis though he didn't get many snaps. Franklin had a good game and Harrison had his INT. Moore had another good game, but Baker got picked on. Jones played good I think. He got shafted on a penalty. Blackmon had a rough day as did Thomas. Cross had a good day. If he keeps it up he'll take over Thomas' spot at FS.

Anyone else think W. Mallory might end up being the Colts best TE?

As a receiver he very well could be. Ogletree has come down to earth after a good start to the season. Hopefully Woods comes back guns blazing next season.

Did I miss this thread last week? Could you share Minshew's grade?

Here is the thread.

Looks like he had average grade: 56-64

Here is his grade for each week, below.

Minshew - 44.3(NR), 71.6(16/33), 58.4(29/33), 58.4(29/34), 62.9(27/33), 52.3(30/33), 48.3(34/35), 50.9(34/36), 51(33/36), 56.6(32/38), 54.8(33/37), 55.7(34/38), 58.8(30/38)

It went up slightly last week from 54.8 to 55.7.

So I would say his grade for last week only was upper 50's, lower 60's(58-62 range?)

@Solid84 might be able to narrow it down better.

How does our offense score only 7 points & Minshew as the QB get such a high grade?

It's a tough one.

Minshew was 9-12 for 99yds and an INT, after we were down 17pts in the 4th.

I imagine that higher completion %, and yards per attempt/+ yards per completion helped.

As he was 17-27 for 141yds 1TD the rest of the game

I guess I don't understand what you guys are posting then. Is 58.8 his overall grade for the season right now?

They evaluate every play, and determine how the player performed. That's compiled into a grade for the game. Not based on stats or outcome, just based on their judgment of how the player performed on each play.

Yes, 58.8 is his grade for the season, as a whole, right now.(I just post the free PFF stuff)

I am posting cumulative season grades, showing the improvement or decline on a weekly basis.

Solid84 is posting current week/game grades only.

So for instance, Pittman had an 83.5 grade this week.(solid post)

Which improved his overall season grade by 2.4pts, and improved 3 spots on the WR ranking. He is 23rd highest graded WR at the moment.(my post)

Pittman - 69.4(30/110), 63.1(65/113), 67.7(48/111), 67(52/113), 67.2(50/110), 67.7(50/113), 69.4(46/114), 68.6(53/120), 69.4(48/118), 71.5(41/118), 73.6(36/122), 75.6(26/119), 78(23/119)

So to break it down a little more, Pittman has improved his grade and rank each of the last 5 weeks, culminating into a season high right now.

Cross!!! Looks like we may end up with Woods, Mallory and Ogletree as our TEs by end of next camp.

Cross actually almost caught Thomas in snaps this week

I sense there may be a change coming soon.

TE room is nice, going forward. We can save $5.9m if we move on from Mo Alie-Cox in the offseason.

QB:

Minshew - 44.3(NR), 71.6(16/33), 58.4(29/33), 58.4(29/34), 62.9(27/33), 52.3(30/33), 48.3(34/35), 50.9(34/36), 51(33/36), 56.6(32/38), 54.8(33/37), 55.7(34/38), 58.8(30/38)

Ehlinger - *(inactive first 12 games), 60(NR)

Richardson - 52.2 *IR

Minshew is what he is at this point, we are lucky to have him no doubt. Despite the ups and downs.

He has almost pulled himself out of the bottom 10.

I can't wait till he's not out starting QB, but he is what we have now, so he has my support. Hopefully he can continue to improve and get us to the playoffs.

RB:

Taylor - *PUP(first 4 games), 46.7(NR), 64(NR), 66.8(NR), 65.1(37/53), 69.3(32/58), 66.2(42/59), 70.9(28/59), 70.9(27/59), 70.9(28/58)

Moss - (NA), 63.6(30/51), 62.3(33/54), 62.1(35/51), 66.6(29/53), 66.6(31/55), 65.9(34/50), 68.1(31/53), 68.2(34/58), 67.7(39/59), 70.8(29/59), 67.8(39/59), 64.7(45/58)

Sermon - (NA), (NA), 49(NR), 43.6(NR), 43.9(NR), 39.3(NR), 39.3(NR), 39.3(NR), 39.1(NR), 39.0(NR), 39(NR), 33.5(NR), 35.8(NR)

Goodson - *(inactive week 1-12), 62.2(NR), 60.6(NR)

Hull - 65.7 * IR

Definitely missing Taylor, I wouldn't necessarily put the last 2 weeks all on Moss, but it has been very underwhelming.

Montgomery - *(inactive week 1-11), 59(NR), 57.5(NR), 64.8(NR)

Pittman has been climbing for a few weeks now.

Downs has took a little step back since injury. Wonder if it's still bothering him, or perhaps hitting a little wall?

Pierce just need more targets.

Woods - * IR(first 13 games)

Just a solid room, as solid said, Ogletree has came back a little but he has spent a good chunk of season grading out in the top 10 so future is bright.

Love Mallory, another bright future

Granson and Mo are fine.

Ready for Woods to get back, probably next year. I think he could probably come back now, but, we would have to cut 1 of the active 4 most likely and I just think they are biding time in case a TE goes down with an injury.(all speculative on my part)

McTelvin - *(inactive week 1-7), 50.1(NR), *(inactive week 9-14)

Buckner is play fine, would like to see it maybe a little higher though.

Great to have Stewart back, hopefully he can round back into form.

Bryan and Johnson are almost unplayable. Johnson been grading out as worst DT for last 2 weeks, and bottom 2 for last 3 weeks.

Adebawore is developing this year, not to worried about that score. He has made a couple plays in limited run.

Stuart - (NA), 60(NR), 56.7(NR), 56.7(NR), 30.1(NR), *(inactive week 6-14),

Well what is there to say here?

I will start with the genius and forward thinking of the organization in bringing Harrison in and having him change positions from early on in the season.

We definitely missed Speed yesterday. Even though he and Franklin are just... Meh..

Stuart should never see the defensive side of the ball again, and hasn't since week 5.(good move)

I like Olubi, actually thought we might see a little more.from him on defense yesterday.

Speed - *(inactive week 1-10), 72.6(NR), 72.6(NR), 72.6(NR)

Flowers - 66.4 * IR

Need Brents back, hopefully this is the week

Moore is having a great resurgence this season

Love the growth Jones is receiving every week matching up against all these #1's. Like Freeland this is only going to help moving forward.

Baker, not much to say, spend most the season as worst ranked CB/or bottom 10. Has crawled out of that at the moment and had a really good pass breakup in the EZ against Chase.

Brown shouldn't see the defensive side of the ball unless it's in the slot.

Still ready to see what Speed can bring to the table, outside of the bonehead move of running into McKenzie making him fumble.

Flowers will be welcomed addition back next year.

I think it's time, it's been building that direction for a couple weeks now.

Blackmon has had 3 bad back to back to back weeks after getting into the top 10 about a month back.

I take your scores and color code them according to score, rather than increase/decrease.

When you lay it out, it spells out pretty starkly what our team needs are:

Z Receiver

Free Safety

DT Depth

OL Depth

CB Depth

I like to see how they are progress throughout the season.

Playing consistently, or having up and downs.

Post your grade updates and color code changes.

His overall grade was 62.1 last week. Passing 63.6. Passing

He’s about around 10-ish points higher in both categories this week. Doesn’t really add up to me. I don’t feel he was significantly better this week.

I just rewatched the Bengals game. I can't speak for a play for play grade, but I think he was better this week than last. Still not great.

Rewatching the game is on my to do list, just not sure I can stomach it yet. haha

I know he wasn’t helped by our receivers this week, though. They had 3-4 drops.

It wasn't fun, except for the end of the 2nd quarter. Sloppy game, everything went wrong, the OL got whipped, we can't defend the pass...

Basically just fewer missed throws this week from Minshew. Limitations are still right there where they always have been.

Here is your Minshew breakdown from last week:

"Minshew - Average - Average Passing - 26/42 (61.9% - ADJ% 71.1%) for 312 yards, TDs 2, No INTs, Batted Passes 1, Yards per attempt 7.4, Big Time Throws 3, Turnover Worthy Plays 2, ADOT 8.8, Targets were credited with 1 drop. Dropbacks under pressure 16 of 42 (38.1%), Time to throw 2.69. Below Average Rushing, Bad Hands - 1 carry for 2 yards, No TDs, 2 Fumbles. No penalties. 71 total snaps."

Versus:

This week:

"Gardner Minshew - Overall 75.7 - 61 total snaps (45 Rec, 1 Run, 15 Rblk) - No penalties. (Passing)

-- Running - 65.4 - 1 Carry for 5 yards"

I would say with just the quick glance, that his running grade and hands grade played a good part in it

Bad vs above average - hands(actually I confused the running grade this week for hands, but he had no fumbles so I imagine hands grade was better)

Below average running vs above average run

Higher completion/+ adjusted  comp % this week vs last week, and had 2 more drops.

No turnover worthy plays vs 2 turnover worthy plays

Seems as though the INY wasn't considered a turnover worthy play? Maybe because we were down 17 at the time?

Can't really remember the INT off top of head at moment. Was it not his fault? I genuinely can't recall right now.

Kenny Moore - Overall 73.4 - 60 total snaps (30 Rdef, 30 Cov) - No penalties. (Defense)

-- Run defense - 61.8

-- Tackling - 80.5 - 3 Tackles, 2 Stops, No missed tackles.

-- Passrush - 80.5 - No Sacks, Hits or Hurries.

-- Coverage - 71.0 - Gave up 7/8 targets for 99 yards (14.1 Y/REC), Gave up 2 TDs, 1 Pass breakup.

Now this makes me question PFF. Moore gets a 73.4 grade overall and a 71 coverage grade?

He gave up a perfect passer rating and two TDs...no way that can be considered above average. And his run grade wasn't very high either. He didn't even blitz, so his pass rush grade is irrelevant. Yet, that pass rush grade and 3 tkls is enough to boost his overall grade to above average? I just find that strange.

Truth. He also didn’t have any batted passes this week.

For the life of me I can’t remember the INT either? Did he actually have one? Is it a mistake?

The one that bounced off the oline and the DT caught in the backfield.   They called it a fumble initially

Remember it now. It was the sack/fumble/INT play.

I don’t know if an INT is automatically called a turnover worthy play. That wasn’t to me though, just a freak play really.

It was more than just that though, was potentially a sack fumble?

Just seems like although it was a freak play, it could just of easily been that sack fumble and I would think that is, but maybe that goes to the line? Maybe depends on how much time he had to throw on that play?

Ah doesn't really matter.
