Weird that their run defense went down because I thought it was really good yesterday.  Man look at that run blocking number!  I know it’s the Texans but I’ll take it.

Out of Interest I looked up our Oline - week 2 (week 1):

 

 

Raimann 76.5 (71.5) - Raimann's runblocking was considerably better against the Texans 73.3 vs. 53.2 against the Jags.

Nelson 56.3 (70.9) - Nelson was a lot worse in run blocking 51.7 vs. week 1 67.1. Scored 88.4 in pass blocking though. 

Kelly 87.3 (70.6) - Elite across the board. 87.4 run blocking. 83.1 pass blocking. 

French 46.6 (---) - Big step down in grades compared to Kelly.

Fries 90.3 (55.4) - DAMN. Carried by his apparently ELITE run blocking - 92.0. Pass blocking 59.5.

Smith 74.2 (70.4) - Run blocking was elite - 89.6 - Pass blocking 63.6.

 

Also for week 1 reference:

 

Speed 48.5 (94.8) - Tackling and Covarage = BAD - 37.0 and 29.7 respectively.

Buckner 61.6 (92.5) - Pretty average across the board this week. Highlight being tackling - 72.2.

Franklin 52.7 (92.2) - Below average across the board this week. Lowlight being Tackling - 37.4.

Stewart 73.3 (90.2) - Had a good week. Run defense of 79.1.

Paye 72.3 (74.1) - A little worse run defense, but better passrush. Rest is the same.

Leonard 74.0 (66.3) - Best grades of our LBs by a good margin.

Thomas 59.9 (43.9) - Better than last week. Tackling was great at 83.6.

 

AR 73.2 (49.3) - Small sample, but he was better across the board. Graded 69.6 in passing.

Minshew 76.8 (44.3) - Had a good game. Graded a 81.0 in passing.

Downs 73.5 (55.8) - Had a good game. 

Granson 51.4 (61.6) - Fewer targets and fewer yards. He did have a drop which is reflected in his grades.

Looks like Kelly might be back.  I assume Q is suffering from his toe injury and that’s probably impacting his play.  Fries had a great game.  I noticed several times Anderson lined up on him and you never heard Anderson’s name once and now we know why Fries handled him.

 

I wish we could get grades specific to stunts.  That’s what line really struggled with last year and I’d like to see how they are doing vs those.

Yeah, Kelly did great, but even with French's less than stellar grades I didn't really notice a significant drop i play by the Oline.

I think some of that is the Texans d-line is just not as good,  I will say the Colts did not have the sustained drives in the second half like they did in the first half with Kelly in there.  They only had one scoring drive in the second half and while they weren’t going three and out they weren’t driving like they were in the first half either so I do think the lines performance dipped a little bit when Kelly came out and the numbers seem to back that up.

Yeah that's true. French definitely could have been a factor in that. But, I also think we went really conservative in the 2nd half.

Fries has really improved his game a lot.  He has been great at pulling and delivering his blocks and getting out on screens.  He’s improved on handling bull rushes too.  Not perfect but much improved over last year. Smith had a couple of penalties that probably hurt his score but he has a history of being a slow starter I believe.  Kelly, wow!  He’s a rock when healthy.  Raimann has secured the LT spot for years to come.  Great draft pick by Ballard as well.  I think this line is going to be awesome.

Thanks for posting. I think Baker has a lot to do with those defensive numbers. The defensive front line was amazing six sacks and 10 tackles for lost. That is a good day by any defense. Maybe it’s time for Brents

Lots of praise around here for EJ Speed, and he definitely has shown up with some collisions and a couple of big plays. But I see him lost in coverage, poor technique, missing tackles, etc. On the TD pass, the ball was thrown directly behind him, and but he was faceguarding with his back to the play. I don't understand what he was doing, and it probably cost him a chance to make a play on the ball.

Zack Moss grade was  63.6 which surprises me a little because on a few runs he got some tough yards.

He definitely has his moments, but struggles a bit in coverage. He looked completely out of sync on that TD play. I honestly feel coverage is a weakness in general for our LBs.

Coverage is a definite sore spot. They're rangy and active, Leonard in particular has great length, but none of them are great in coverage.

 

Same thing kind of applies to the entire back end. Lots of traits from these guys, they compete, and they're even around the ball a lot more than I expected. Much better than early last season in coverage, IMO. Some tough stretches in the second half yesterday... But straight up covering your man, we don't really have anyone who excels at that.

Does anyone know if they separate out PFF scores by quarter? After we got up 31-10 and stopped playing aggressive, blitzing, attacking defense(we basically QUIT playing defense) the numbers had to drop tremendously in the 4th qtr. I'd like to see the numbers for the first 3 quarters vs. the 4th qtr. alone.

It's interesting Q and Fries were actually polar opposites this game:

 Last season Fries got thrown into action in a sunami of things falling apart under Frank. There is no question this late rd pick wasn't quite ready.

 Our opponents wisely ran blitzes and stunts his way and he handled them poorly.

 He should be better prepared now, he has Steichen's offense and play calling, and IMO a healthy Kelly who is able to move well (for now) and has his strength back up after a couple seasons playing at less than 100%.

 I enjoyed rewatching our line execution during the game. There are enough time outs and half time to easily do it.

 We saw Glowinski have 4-5 really good games a season, usually early in the season probably before he started getting nicked up. And perhaps because of favorable match ups. 

 Barring injury we look to be pretty good on the O-Line compared to our peers.

I found this graphic both fascinating and super informative in terms of how we are doing in the trenches.

Bottom line:

 

Colts are above average in pass protection and pass rush (wow!, for once) and are straight up elite in run blocking and run D.

 

Very telling that on the run blocking and run D front, the Colts and Eagles are almost a direct overlay on each other. 

 

Steichen's staff and schemes are somehow not getting enough credit, despite the kudos they are already getting. They are basically taking the same offensive line and almost the same defensive front and making them worlds better than last year. It may only be two games, but so far this team's future looks echelons brighter than it has in a long time.

He’s got a very bad toe, but he’s still playing.   It clearly impacted his performance.   I never worry about Nelson.    If he’s not playing well there’s always a legit reason.

Slight correction:  I believe Fries is the 6th highest rated guard of week 2.   But I don’t believe he’s the 6th highest rated guard overall thru the first two weeks.   Not after his first week where Fries was ranked 42nd overall.
