Matte, Unitas, and Cuozzo: an emergency QB

Seeing what happened to the 49ers QBs reminded me of Running Back Tom Matte playing QB in 65. Coincidentally, it’s probably also the first time a QB wore the plays on a wristband. Matte played QB in 2 games, beating the Rams, and ‘losing’ vs the Packers on a FG that today’s replay shows was wide.

For a Championship Game, the NFL should allow a 3rd Emergency QB, IMO…..

Matte played at Ohio State.  He and Johnny U are the reasons I became a Colts fan.  Living in Ohio, all of my buddies were either Browns or Steeler fans.

I still remember that 65 game even though I was a little kid.  I also remember seeing Johnny U toking in the MASH movie, lol.

It’s not that the league says they can’t dress 3 QBs, it’s that the niners have no other QB even on their roster.

now I do think teams should be able to dress all 53 guys for the playoffs which could give more depth for such things but likely doesn’t change the outcome. Even when Johnson was in there, that offense was gone with Purdy out

Once Lance and Jimmy G were done for the season, they were on thin ice with just Purdy, Shanahan knew what he didn't have in Josh Johnson. Shanahan should have gone and signed a guy like Chad Kelly from the CFL and have a simplified version of the playbook, as a backup plan, IMO.

I believe the NFL will soon allow a ‘not counted against the actives’ emergency QB in Playoffs only.

Yep, that game vs the Packers is when I became a Colts fan.

I was born in Baltimore in 1954. So, although I had no idea what I was hearing my Dad play on the radio, I can assume I’ve been a Colts fan for 68 years. I preceded Unitas! (I also freak kids out when I tell them I was in elementary school when Ike was President. They have no idea who Ike was…..)

I faintly remember the 58 Championship on our 9” black and white tv built in a huge console. I moved to Indy in 1980, and my Mom sent articles on Colts and Orioles from the York Daily Reporter, the Baltimore News American and the Baltimore Sun. Colts followed me (of course) here in 84. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

I was born in '55. Lived in Chicagoland until '14 when I found a job that didn't care where I lived, so we came to Indy.

The NHL has an emergency third goalie in the stands at every game, who can be used by either team if their two goalies get injured. It's usually some local guy. Happened a couple of years ago where Carolina had to use the 42 year old Zamboni driver in Toronto. Funny things is, they won the game!

That's actually pretty awesome, never heard of that.

When Josh Johnson trotted out on the field, I knew it was over lmao . I didn't even realize he was still in the league.

Same. I just sat there looking at my television like

Prior to 2011 teams were allowed to dress 3, and only 2 counted against the game day roster. When they re-negotiated the CBA they did away with that rule and just upped the GDR by 1 spot.

With injuries in the spotlight the way they are I wouldn’t be surprised to see the NFLPA and league circle back and look at that at least one more time before next season.

Even with the 4th stringer in, the 49ers were still playing tough and looked like they had a legitimate chance to win...... until late in the 2nd qtr. when the refs took over and started throwing flags against them.

That's when we went fishing on the lake where I live. I caught a 2.5 lb bass and Emma caught 2 speckled perch on a cane pole. Lol

We catch and release fresh water fisn.

Little did I know that the refs would be much worse in the late game, Which unfortunately, I caught the last qtr.. WOW !!!

I was told Rich Eisen said the "Bengals got called for Defensive Holding on 5th down". :funny:

REFS were actually worse in the 49ers/Philly game. In the KC/Cincy game both teams got jipped. Frank Clark got tackled on a 3rd and 15 play that allowed Burrow to get a 1st down and they went down and scored a TD (clear hold). The late hit call at the end on Cincy was the right one.

REFS suck though so I guess that is the main point chuckling homer simpson GIF

I didn't watch much of each game. Caught the KC game in about the 4th. What I seen was just more reason to watch less and less until not watching at all and wasting my time on something that more and more people are saying its all make beleive. My brother and couple friends said twitter/Facebook  lit up after the chiefs game. And many said they are done and boycotting the Super Bowl.

I only keep a eye on it because of betting purposes and I think that along with fantasy is true for many.

I didn't bet because I thought the networks/advertisers would be satisfied with any of the four possible match ups for the super bowl.......SILLY ME, what was I thinking? haha

I was 16 when that game took place . I could easily see the FG was wide . I believe that game prompted the move to extend the goal post . Matte did play 1 more game as  there used to be a post season game, called the playoff bowl. It was between the 2 conference losers and Matte was QB as the Colts easily defeated Dallas 35-3 . He threw for 157 yards and 2 tds to Jimmy Orr.

That "game day roster" has always been a pet peeve of mine.  No one seems to know why it's in place.  The owners are paying all of the guys, why not let them all be eligible.

The theory is that each team is allowed one backup per player for O/D/STs, and allowing more would let teams stash "specialty players" like say a guy who's 7' tall who's only job is to block kicks.

IMHO, it's a rule that should be thrown out.

I wondered if anyone else thought of that when they talked about putting McCaffrey in at QB (which obviously they should have done - horrible coaching decision by 49ers). I didn't see the Colts game but heard about it from my dad, who though not a Colts fan was rooting for the guy.

I heard Montana was in the stands. How do you not make him an offer at half time?  :)
