Rooney Rule info: https://operations.nfl.com/inside-football-ops/inclusion/the-rooney-rule/

Quote

In recent years, the Workplace Diversity Committee has proposed additional changes to strengthen the Rooney Rule, including:

Clubs must interview at least two diverse candidates from the Career Development Advisory Panel list, or a diverse candidate not currently employed by the club.

Clubs must conduct an in-person interview with at least one external minority candidate for any GM or head coaching interview.

Clubs must continue to consider multiple diverse candidates.

Clubs must maintain complete records and provide them to the league upon the Commissioner’s request.

If the final decision maker is involved from the beginning of the hiring process, they must be involved through the conclusion of the process.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that the updates “bolster the current Rooney Rule requirements and are intended to create additional opportunities for diverse candidates to be identified, interviewed, and ultimately hired when a vacancy becomes available.”

The committee also supported new accountability measures to ensure that all teams follow the procedures outlined in the rule.

Interview timing rules:

https://dknation.draftkings.com/nfl/23547406/nfl-head-coach-interview-rules-assistant-coaches-start-date-for-interviewing-nfl-playoffs

Quote

Some teams fire coaches well before the end of the season, while others wait until the regular season concludes. No matter when a head coach is fired, the same rules apply when a team is looking to interview a coach who is currently employed by another team.

The NFL has adjusted the rules over the years, but starting in January 2023, teams cannot interview a head-coaching candidate who is employed by another NFL team until at least the third day after the conclusion of that team’s Week 18 game. If a team plays their final game on Saturday, the third day would be the following Tuesday. If a team plays their final game on Sunday, the third day would be the following Wednesday.

...

Additionally, if a candidate is employed by another team, they cannot do an in-person interview until after the conclusion of the Wild Card round. That would suggest phone or video conference interviews only.

None of these rules apply to candidates who are not currently employed by another NFL team. For every Jim Harbaugh flirtation, a team could interview him whenever they want pending whatever needs to be resolved with Michigan. For every retired Sean Payton connection, a team could interview such a coach whenever the two sides agree to meet.

Like to see Moore and Dorsey. So far; go with Ben, Shane or Morris.

I’m glad to see the team is being diligent crossing the T’s with the Rooney rule. However I really want Harbaugh. Would settle for Payton but the draft pick lost is the issue. I hope they consider quality  experience not just a young “hopeful”

I have some doubts that the colts are in technical violation of the rooney rule with the interim hiring of Saturday.   I need to do a little more research and don't have the time right now but this says any vacancy has to follow it:

“We have talked about interim coach hirings in our committee, and we just decided that in terms of requiring Rooney Rule interviews and all of the hiring requirements we now have in place for the head coach that it’s just impossible to require that for an interim head coach,” Steelers president Art Rooney II, chair of the NFL’s workplace diversity committee, said Wednesday at the owners meetings in Irving, Texas. “. . .We don’t think there’s a lot we can about the interim coach situation. It’s just the timing that needs to apply to a situation like that just doesn’t allow for all of the policies to be enforced in that situation.

...

“Once the season’s over, the position has to be declared vacant, and they have to comply with all the rules,” Rooney said. “So as much as coach Saturday might be a candidate, they still have to go through all the procedures and requirements to fill the position that any other club would have. . . . The requirements still are there after the season, and we expect they’ll be complied with.”

Hiring an outside candidate as an interim is considered an exception, due to what's stated above. I personally think what the Colts did violates the spirit of the Rooney Rule, but the league decided it doesn't make sense to change the rule to cover interim hires, due to the variables involved.

Ejiro Evero has been somewhat of a rising star in recent years. He was passing game coordinator under Brandon Staley with the Rams in 2020 and safeties coach under Wade Phillips before that. This is a bit of an interesting choice because they both run a much more creative and complex defense than what Ballard has wanted so far. Here's an interesting piece about Brandon Staley's defense and Evero by extension who runs similar principles with his defenses:

BTW Raheem Morris is running similar defense with the Rams now and we are interviewing him too. Maybe Ballard is ready to spice things up a bit with his defense?

I was hoping to see it in the rules themselves, but I can't deny a direct quote from Rooney himself!

I've had copies of NFL rules before and I love rules of procedure so I'm going to see if I can get that somewhere for this season.  Fun reading for me!  lol.

Normally I would want an offensive coach when bringing in a rooke qb, but I would be very on board with Aaron Glenn. A great college and NFL player, he's been a scout in the front office of the Jets along with being a defensive coach. Only 1 year as coordinator is a concern though.

About time we did that with our Plain Jane 4-3, spice it up. :)

Harbaugh would be a good candidate, but I do not think he is leaving Michigan. The fact that the Saints still have Payton under contract and would have to be compensated is a big red flag. The bounty scandal, and his speaking about a couple of teams he would be interested in coaching seems a little self-serving, do we really want that baggage.

So I listened to Ballard again for the second time just now.  Don't be surprised if Bubba is our next HC.  He mentioned about sometimes you miss on what is in front of you when referring to candidates.  I don't think that is a reference to Jeff I think it is Bubba.  So I ask the same question I did about Jeff could Bubba put together an all star coaching staff?

And the he said but Irsay has the final say. I believe he would never sign off on Bubba being the next HC.

I think this is a stretch by you, I don't think Ballard's comments were a clue in any way, especially not to Bubba Ventrone.

But to answer your question, I think Bubba could put together a great staff if given the chance. Based on his playing career and coaching career, he has connections around the league. I have no idea what he'd do on offense and defense, but he prepares his unit very well. I think he'll get a shot eventually.

I think that was in reference to some of the coaches they interviewed previously that they passed on for McDaniels, namely Vrabel.

I have more confidence with Bubba putting together a very good coaching staff compared to Saturday, IMO.

That’s one way to look at it. Because he did admit to essentially replacing Reich with Saturday as opposed to just firing him. But that still means to me that Irsay must not have any clue about the other coaches on staff if he immediately thought of Saturday. Bubba is Chris Ballard interview because Ballard probably knew he could coach.

Bubba Ventrone for HC, Joe Brady (Bills QB coach right now) or Kliff Kingsbury for OC, Jim Schwartz for DC (or Brandon Staley if he is fired) would not be a bad staff.

I like Raheem Morris but I’m also okay waiting for Demeco Ryans. But I’d I had to rank the guys we have interviewed so far I would have it

1. Raheem Morris

2. Ben Johnson

3. Aaron Glenn

Those are my top 3.

For guys we haven’t interviewed, I would have it

-Demeco Ryan’s

-Jim Harbaugh

-Eric Bienemy/Byron Leftwich
