Texans fire Lovie Smith

What a dumpster fire organization. 2 coaches 1 and done in a row. Honestly were in a bad spot, and outside of Colts nation we may be looked at as the laughing stock of the NFL currently. We are nowhere near the depths of terrible as Houston though. Pretty sure they even still pastor Easterby calling the shots around there but won't say it publically.

There are many teams worse off than we are = Texans - they will never get it right, Jets, Broncos, Raiders, Panthers, Falcons, Cards stuck with Murray's contract, Saints, and Washington. We are in a good spot with that 4th pick, we just need to get the QB pick right and bring in the right coach. I would even say we are better off than the Browns too, being stuck with Watson's contract would suck.

Apparently beating us and blowing the #1 draft pick is a fireable offense!

He should be considered & interviewed for our vacant Head Coaching position - not only would he satisfy the Rooney Rule, like Harbaugh, he has coached a team to a Superbowl berth, but didn't win which would make him as hungry as anyone else we could hire.

Houston has lots of great draft picks in the 2023 draft.  They are a year or 2 out, but could be very good soon.

Houston has 3 1st round picks the next 3 drafts. Plus a extra 3rd this year and a extra 4th next year.  They fleeced the Browns.

I thought they had 2 1st round picks this year alone?  I think you were just saying what they got from Cleveland.   They are loaded with 2 1st round picks in each of the next 3 drafts.

You are right. This has the potential to be one of the best trades In years. IMO they should have kept Lovie.

I agree that they should have kept Lovie.   Maybe they feel that they will be a desired team for head coaches.

Nowhere to go but up.

Conference is weak.

Loads of great draft picks.

That's a said situation for Lovie Smith.

Just like Chris Ballard - he inherited part of the "dumpster fire" created when Bill O'Brien thought he could be a Bill Belichick clone.

The days of one person being both the GM and the Head Coach are gone.

Best wishes to Lovie Smith who is a class act and a great defensive coach.

I won't say I feel sorry for Lovie.  He knew what he was getting into and he failed miserably.  The last head coach (Culley) was fired after 1 bad season as well.

Not making this political.

CNN was saying that this firing was racially motivated and I think that is nonsense.  Both Culley and Lovie are African American.

    • Our defense will never be GREAT as long as we play * defense by having corners 10 yards off the ball on 3rd and 3. And an unbelievable unwillingness to blitz more than 4 times a game. And also, it doesn't matter who is in the secondary if the front seven can't stop the run(we can) and get to the passer(we did ok getting to the passer, but we need more blitzing from lb'ers). Our first pick should be an offensive lineman like Fuaga, Powers-Johnson, or Barton. Then target a receiver like Polk, Pearsall, Washington, Corley, or Roman Wilson in the second or third rounds. As much as I would like to get Bowers I just don't see it happening. And we need a very good linebacker to go along with Speed and Franklin.
    • Yeah, could very well be. I think I remember Ballard said he did it to have more flexibility when asked. if it is Paye, I would rather see him play out the year before extending.
    • The idea of DeJean going in the late first round is due to his instincts and overall very competent play in nearly all aspects of DB play.  Cover 3 FS is more valuable, IMO, than a cover 2 FS.   Contrast DeJean's overall RAS and talents with Hooker, who was only good at being a single high deep guy...especially his rookie year where he picked off bad QBs for a while...and DeJean at 22 or later with a 3rd round pick gathered from a trade down is a much better decision than Hooker was at 15.   BTW, Blackmon had the same ACL injury as Hooker and did well as an overall S as a rookie, but wasn't a single high speed guy, and is probably still a better overall S now than Hooker is in DAL...both having the exact same injury years ago.
    • To the bolded, I don't constantly hear that. I see people say it on the Internet. It was a big thing when we were looking for a HC, how candidates would be scared off because of how the Reich/Saturday thing went, Irsay's meddling, etc. One specific theory was Sirianni would tell Steichen not to take the Colts job. We see how that went.   Does Irsay's history negatively impact the team? I'd like to know if there's any examples where you think it has.
    • Some are not understanding this. Have a feeling there will be an upset group after Thursday night. Give AR every opportunity to succeed by surrounding him with weapons. If Pittman was to miss a few weeks, it would be bad. Tbh we should draft offense the 1st and 2nd rounds. Sign a Simmons and a vet corner.
