We're losing Scottie Montgomery. Maybe his contract was expired? Or maybe this is a signal we're hiring an offensive minded HC who will have autonomy over that side of the ball? I think probably Scottie's contract was up... I like him, he would have been one of the coaches I wanted to stay.

I agree it's going to be Callahan or Steichen.  I'll guess it's going to be the latter,

He has also made comments that lead me to think he does at least have a preference.  Doenst mean he would never bend under any circumstance but personally i do think it matters

There is logic to back the indoor thing, plus we already have 4-3 guys signed and no 3-4 rush line backer which is the most expensive position on the defense

A 3-4 wouldnt be ideal for Shag Leonards skill set and he has a big contract already

Well, with the Leo position, this defense is already a hybrid.  Pete Carrol always described this defense as a 4-3 with 3-4 personnel.

Teams are playing the pass in 2023, so I don't think it matters much today, generally speaking.  Morris or Martindale could come in and fuse their ideas with what Bradley is doing - spice it up a bit.

Its gotta be Steichen. Why else not announce it?

I think the hay is just barely in the barn at this point, and that's assuming they aren't still considering Bieniemy. They went to Philly on Saturday to meet with Steichen, let's assume they flew back yesterday, and today and tomorrow they're discussing the 2nd round candidates. If it was Callahan or Morris, and they start negotiations over the next day or two, then we'd still be looking at a finalized contract later this week.

If it's Steichen, they'd have to reach a preliminary agreement by today, because there's another blackout period starting tomorrow. Still can't finalize a contract until after the SB.

If they're still considering Bieniemy, who has not been reported as a 2nd interview candidate so far, then they'd have to wait until after the SB to talk to him again.

If it's anyone else who has been in the 2nd round of interviews, they could finalize the hire this week. But I think after going to Philly on Saturday, today would be the absolute earliest, and that's probably ambitious. If we don't have something bubbling up by Wednesday, I think that probably means Steichen is the guy.

Well ….   Damn!

I was hoping to avoid this.   But in the scenario and circumstance the Colts are in I guess it couldn't be helped.    I suspect losing coaches the Colts were hoping to keep is going to happen a few times more in the next 10 days or so.

Yeah I don't like it for several reasons. It's not like he's irreplaceable, but it would be good to keep an assistant who's been coaching one of our most productive positions. And I felt like he could have been a pipeline candidate, where a couple years down the line he's getting HC consideration.

I dont agree that is true for this colts roster.  We dont have a 3-4 rush line backer and thats one of the most important and most expensive spots.

Shaq Leonard wouldnt be a great fit and he is our highest paid defender.  He could probably play ILB but its not the best use of his skill set and we didnt pay him that much to miscast him.

Theres probably several that could overlap but we are missing a big piece and have a highly paid bad fit

One thing I am really excited for at the introductory  press conference is what the new coach likes in a new QB. What are the traits he wants.

When the press conference happens, don’t be surprised or disappointed if the new HC is not very candid about the qualities in a QB he likes.   Don’t want that info getting public.   Might tip his hand over which QB he prefers.   And nobody wants that.   He is more likely to talk about the traits he wants the night of the draft AFTER he’s made his pick.

I have found most of the times they will talk about what they like in a QB without giving to much away. Reich did with Carolina. Just vague things like toughness ect. Especially if it Callahan or Steichen.

Besides, Wink may not have a QB preference, and defer to whatever OC he bring in.

So far haven’t heard about third round of interviews so that’s good. I imagine if it’s Steichen his agent wouldn’t want that out either with the SB coming up so he will probably not leak anything.

Yeah I don’t know how the defensive guys would approach it. They might lean on Ballard more.

If it was Steichen wouldn't we hear that other candidates were no longer in contention?

For instance on the Rams' sites, they are still waiting to see if they need a new DC or not.

The Lions DC already knows he won't be a part of the Cardinals plan. No word yet on the Colts. Same for Callahan.

I think the Colts haven't made a decision yet.

This coaching search is kind of boring

I tend to agree, we didnt bring in a single big name with head coaching experience that Im really fired up about.  The leading candidates seem to be DCs, Id rather see an offensive coach.

I'd actually rather any of them defer to the incoming OC hire, then offer preferences to the OC.

Even with Steichen or Callahan, I'd want a bit of a distancing.

It’s interesting Colts blocked Bradley from talking with other teams. Also mentioned in the Breer story the Ballard connections with the Callahan family.

They can only block him for lateral position interviews.

Yes. But they are blocking him during a time when other DC positions are being filled.

He must be a part of the new coaching package. I hope they wouldn't block him, only to have a new head coach fire him 2 weeks from now.

I think Jason Spears is right. The Colts are mandating that Gus stay regardless of the coach.

Perhaps, but if true, you'd think those were weeded out phase 1.

They aren’t going to force anything but I can see them asking a new HC to keep them.  It would probably be good for a new HC to keep the defensive  staff so there isn’t so much change. If things don’t go well those defensive changes can happen in year two when the HC is more settled in.

Blocking the DC from leaving is a weird flex if we’re hiring Matindale as Vegas indicates.

So What No GIF

Is there a real sportsbook showing Martindale as the favorite? Or just one random site saying so?
