People are predicting a young offensive coach, because that's what they want, but if you actually look at what Irsay and Ballard have said and done, the result might be different.  Irsay just fired an OC and QB guru for a leader type while Ballard said he regrets predetermining the young OC and QB match with McDaniels and Luck.  If he had a do-over, he would pick Vrabel in a heartbeat.

When did Ballard make the comment you’ve referenced?    About regret over predetermining Luck and McDaniels?   And picking Vrabel in a heartbeat?    I don’t recall that, nor do I recall any beat writer reporting that.

Not saying you’re wrong, but if you’re right, I missed that.   Is there a link?

I think people are putting too much stock into the idea that the Colts need a young OC to help develop the QB. Any coach can and should be able to do that. You need the right QB coach and a scheme that suits the QB. Josh Allen is a great example as he’s played for McDermott (defensive minded HC) his whole career. Remember he was really raw coming out of college and didn’t have the best final season at Wyoming. He’s turned out great, but a lot of his development should be credited to Josh himself for putting the work in, and Dorsey who was his QB coach since he got to the team up until this season when he was promoted to OC.

The HC has a lot of responsibilities so I don’t expect him to be in the QB meeting rooms breaking down film or coaching him on his mechanics. If anything the important hire will be QB coach and OC. For example, if you like Anthony Richardson then you need a good QB coach who can work with him on his footwork and accuracy, but also an OC who can utilize his running ability.

For CJ Stroud the QB coach might be less important since he’s fairly polished already, but then you need an OC who can build around a QB who mostly plays from the pocket and isn’t a great athlete.

They could hire Callahan or Steichen, but objectively observing what they have said and done, I don't believe it's the shoo-in most seem to think it is.

Ballard never said he would have picked Vrabel in a do over.  That is your opinion correct?

I think they are definitely in play for sure, but it’ll be fore their ability to coach an entire football team and get them to play inspired. Not because of what they can do for Stroud, Young, Levis, or Richardson.

I saw a few say saturday possible new HC ,if this happens I guess Irsay wants number 1 pick next year not number 4 like this year .Irsay should be upset as an owner and not  messing around taking a chance on someone who has less experience then I do. Theres really only 2 possible  coaches of the bunch with prior experience helping new rookie QB's that is Brian Callahan and Shane Steichen of the 2 Steichen has more experience and proved himself  and have you heard him talk to the eagles team about being ready and whats  on  the line the man is a leader.  I like jeff saturday but hes years away from being a coach of any kind( sorry  jeff but how I feel)   GOD BLESS THE COLTS WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET

 JUST MY 2 CENTS

Hopefully Colts go a different direction than Saturday. I didn't know you played 4 years at a division 1 College and played 14 years in the nfl. Pretty impressive

Probably will be leaked soon if true. It’s not Saturday if they are concerned with someone backing out. That leads me to believe it’s Steichan but we will see.

So, what's the deal against Wink?

I want someone young who can get this team playing modern football. Not some old guy stuck in his ways.

Players play hard for Wink no matter where he coached.

This looks fishy. This is where the odds are coming from:

https://www.oddschecker.com/us/insight/football/nfl/20230205-indianapolis-colts-next-head-coach-odds-sportsbooks-shock-bettors-make-wink-martindale-the-favorite

But this is just an article posted by someone with 200 followers on twitter. I cannot find ANY sportsbook that actually has those odds or anything close to it. This seems more like they are throwing % at the wall for traffic.

Rapport on ESPN sports center just said his sources claim the colts have made a decision and are now waiting to have the contract signed before announcing it.

Was that report a bottom line news feed? Or actual reporter?

I've seen nothing anywhere regarding any decision being made.

Also, I just watched a Reddit video of every Andrew Luck TD ever, and now I'm horribly depressed.

False hope. Cards and Colts may wait to next week? As will be Super Bowl media week as of Monday?

He just said it verbally when he was on the air.

I would think Ian rap and some of the national guys would of already reported this. I would like to know who said that on ESPN.

Rapport is the one who made the comment.

    • Here’s a fun exercise! Let’s go over a list of players who have signed, or re-signed here after actually hitting free agency (if top free agents don’t want to come here then surely they don’t stay after hitting FA, right?) and where they have ranked in those free agency classes from credible media outlets!    2012 (Per CBS Sports top 100) Reggie Wayne (Re-signed) -22 Cory Redding - 39 Samson Satele - 68 2013 (Per NFL[dot]com top 85) Gosder Cherilus - 46 LaRon Landry - 57 2014 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Hakeem Nicks - 22 Art Jones - 32 D’Qwell Jackson - 49 2015 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Andre Johnson - 20 Frank Gore - 29 Trent Cole - 31 Kendall Langford - 64   2016 (Per NFL[dot]com top 99) Patrick Robinson - 79   2017 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Jonathan Hankins - 11 Jabaal Sheard - 29 Jack Doyle (Re-signed) - 61 John Simon - 64 Darius Butler (Re-signed) - 100 Margus Hunt - 101   2018 (Per anyone and everyone) None   2019 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Justin Houston - 8 Devin Funchess - 45 Pierre Desir (Re-signed) - 46 Clayton Geathers (Re-signed) - 63 2020 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Philip Rivers - 11 Anthony Costanzo (Re-signed) - 12 2021 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) TY Hilton (Re-signed) - 33 Eric Fisher - 42 Xavier Rhodes - 53 Marlon Mack (Re-signed) - 79 Al-Quadin Muhammad (Re-signed) - 99 2022 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Stephon Gilmore - 12 2023 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Samson Ebukam - 58 Gardner Minshew - 95   2024 (Per NFL[dot]com top 101) Julian Blackmon (Re-signed) - 35 Kenny Moore (Re-signed) - 38 Grover Stewart (Re-signed) - 40   Regardless of how any of these signings actually worked out, it’s time to give the argument that top free agents won’t come here the old yeller treatment and bury it. It’s nonsense.
    • Because some are here to be right not support the Colts.
    • Huh?   Are you under the impression that a head coach — any head coach — approaches all 17 regular season games like a playoff game?   They don’t.      So I don’t care what Wash is doing with Daniels, they’re not the same player.  Daniels is far more experienced than AR, so how Wash uses JD is going to be different than how Steichen uses AR.     So my point is that Steichen can try to do both….   groom Richardson AND win games.  It doesn’t have to be one or the other.  It can be both.  Sorry we see this differently.
    • Because we have a GM who won’t really attempt to do business.    Ryan Grigson didn’t have a problem landing free agents.   Andre Johnson was a superstar when he came here. We didn’t know he was washed up until after he got here and he got out on the field.    Does the name “Frank Gore” ring a bell? At all? He’s only a hall of fame player, so maybe you’ve never heard of him.   Corey Redding signed here late in his career, and he helped get Pagano’s 3-4 off the ground.    Mike Adams came here and promptly made a pair of pro-bowls.    Gosder Cherilus was considered one of the best right tackles in the league when he signed here, despite how it turned out.    Ahmad Bradshaw came here before injuries derailed his career for good.    LaRon Landry was a heavily sought after free agent, and chose to come here to make the bank to buy his juice.    Erik Walden came here and far exceeded the deal he was on.    Art Jones had a lot of interest around the league when he signed here before injuries and getting hooked up with LaRon Landry’s juice dealer got in the way.   D’qwell Jackson signed here after being one of the league’s leading tacklers for the Browns and made a pro bowl that same year.    Hakeem Nicks signed here after starting a winning Super Bowl for the Giants and having a 1K+ yards and 10+ TD season. He had multiple 1K yard seasons under his belt on arrival.    What about trades? Vontae Davis came here in a trade. Glaze over it with the benefit of hindsight all you want, but Trent Richardson was 1 year removed from being the 3rd overall pick, and had put up 1K yards rushing as a rookie when he landed in town.     Hell, even Ballard has been able to land some high quality free agents when he’s actually been willing to make a deal. Philip Rivers and Stephon Gilmore didn’t wind up here because the league told them they had to be here.    The facts that these free agents all signed here aren’t untrue simply because you either don’t remember them, or just flat out don’t know them. Luckily someone writes these signings down somewhere for the sake of posterity, so we can look back on those official records and prove that they did in fact happen, despite the claims to the contrary.
