Several thoughts.   Kevin Hickey who runs Colts wire is just a clearing house for already published Colts info.   He is NOT breaking news himself.   I’m not knocking him. I’m just saying.   He does a good job.

But the Martindale story is overblown.   The headline says he is “A” front runner, it does not say he is “THE” front runner and that’s a big difference.

Also there is a tweet from Pat Leonard  tweet in the link calling Martindale “one of the front runners”.

Bottom line: if you’re in the Round two group, you are — almost by definition — a front runner.

So I strongly recommend to all, do NOT read too much into this.  There are 8 candidates left, and they’re ALL front runners.

Isn't there normally only ONE front runner ?

Like being at the head of the line ?

# it, I’m a front runner now, too.

And just for reading this post you’re a front runner.

The guy who wrote the code for this website is a front runner now, too.

Ope, the guy who plugged in the server the site is hosted on has been identified as a front runner also.

But enough about that, I have some breaking news. Sources indicate to me that Jim Irsay has pivoted from Saturday and now views Stevie Ray Vaughn as the front runner for the job.

Obviously a very fluid situation…

Only if you’re thinking linear.   But if you’ve got a group, then there could be several in front, several in the middle and several in the back.

There are 8 candidates in the 2nd interview group.  And there’s just no way for anyone to know who leads.   I’m not sure we’ll ever know until the new coach is announced.

I think I am coming around to what a lot are thinking. We would have a coach already if they weren’t very interested in Steichan. Eagles going to the SB delayed things.

You mean there is a method to this madness?!

It makes sense that it will be Morris, Callahan or Steichan. Especially if they are being asked to keep defensive staff. Morris has history with Bradley. Morris could probably help Bradley evolve the defense. Then the offensive guys might be ok with it since the defense looked good and they can bring in their offensive coaches.

I read on the news that Morris had a really long 2nd interview and now is another front runner of the 3rd group

I think Morris has always been one of the front runners. All these guys seemed to have like 12 hour second interviews. Callahan and Morris interviews reportedly went very very well. If the Steichan interview doesn’t go well tomorrow I think we will know in next few days. Will be interesting if Steichan does well though if it  leaks he is being offered or will be kept quiet.

I just want someone that can immediately identify when we have Taylor run effectively for 83 yards in the first half, then we come out with three straight incompletions to Pittman in double-coverage to start the second half - and then proceeds to walk over and break his foot off in the OC's *** - rather than wait to go back to Taylor half-way through fourth, down by 17.

Yes, but Morris is the Principal Tier 1 Frontrunner..... There is big difference.

Steichen wouldnt surprise me though in terms of who they pick. We are currently using Frank scheme. Sirriani learned from Frank, and Steichen is under Sirriani. Hiring Steichen may keep from making wholesale changes to our offensive scheme.

And they haven't even touched upon the fact that when the Colts widdle it down to the final two candidates, they'll determine the winner with the Showcase Showdown on the Price Is Right!

A good coach is going to design  scheme around the Qb strengths. Not the other way around.  That’s what is impressive with Steichan. The made that offense around hurts strengths.

The weird show for the outsiders is here to stay for a while. If Ballard hired his guy right now and Irsay went to the press conference and said “Yeah I let Chris do his thing his way and he found the guy he wants, and now I’m gonna go chill in the Bahamas for the next 6 years” we’re still going to have to put up with media nonsense about Irsay interfering for at least the next several months.

If that’s how it plays out, most of us would take it (the Irsay getting out of the way part).

We sure like to interact with Eagles folks, Grigson came from there, Reich from there, Sirianni went there, and now it’s probably Steichen, I’m thinking. Anyone else, we’d have finished the process by now.

Most of these outsiders couldn’t name 2 players on our team. And that’s if you gave them our roster

Yeah but it doesnt change the verbage and some of the other things that would be universal with the scheme. If what they do schematically in Philly is similar to what we have here then thats less work that needs to be done to get everybody on the same page. The players here already know what we run now. With Steichen you probably can keep most of the stuff the same and he could tweak versus implementing a brand new scheme.

Yeah that's what I mean. No one "plugged into the search" is talking. I listen to the Ringer podcast at times, Solak is making a name for himself but he's more blogger than insider, and I don't think he knows anything.

Yep, maybe he's hearing other teams people talking, but it seems like the Colts are currently not leaking and everything that's coming out seems to be coming from outside the decision-making circle within the Colts. Everyone is guessing right now. Solak is good listen when talking about football analysis, but I have no reason to think he has any more/better sources than the big national reporters or even the beat writers.

    • Once again running out time to put out a complete list of both offense and defensive players and where I have them ranked among their peers.  Common theme from original pre-college Week 1 many of the top players are not even listed or have fallen sharply after around 4 weeks of playing.    2025 NFL Draft QBs Cam Ward - Miami (FL) - Ward’s 3x300 games in a row have earned him 3-straight 90.0+ passing grades.  Jaxson Dart (MISS)  Diego Pavia (Vandy) - after 4 weeks and is R2 in the SEC ahead of Ewers, Manning, Milroe, Nussmeier, and Carson Beck.  Thrown 6 TDs no INTs, recovered 3 teammate fumbles. Ben Wooldridge (Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns) Noah Fiftia (Arizona)  KJ Jefferson (UCF) Tyler Shough (Louisville)  Cam Miller (NDST) Kyle McCord (Syracuse)   2025 NFL Draft OL LG Michael McAninch (Air Force) - After 3 weeks has a 91.7 overall season grade with a 92.4 RB grade.  Proved he can hold up to Baylor didn’t allow any QB pressure. RT Tyler Needham (Rutgers) 6’4” 306-pounds – After 3 weeks been dominant.  On 48 PB snaps only given up 1 QB hurry. LT/RT/OG Grey Zabel (North Dakota State) RT Lucas Scott (Army) 6’3” 305-pounds – After 3 weeks has an 85.2 RB grade.  Figure the Army trains more hand-to-hand combat and could be decent in PB game as well. LG Joshua Gray (Oregon State) LG Donovan Jackson (OSU) - good to see Jackson play again and display his dominance in his return to action. OT Wyatt Milum (West Virginia) RG Luke Kandra (Cincinnati) RG Tate Ratledge (Georgia LT Kelvin Banks Jr (Texas) LG Dylan Fairchild (Georgia) LT Percy Lewis (Auburn) 6’7” 355-pounds – After 4 weeks on 85 snaps has a 78.5 grade as a backup. OC Jake Slaughter (Florida) LT Josh Simmons (OSU)   2025 NFL Draft RBs RB/WR-KR Brashard Smith (Southern Methodist) 5’10” 196 pounds - Smith already has 17 missed tackles, 3rd most among all college RBs. RB Ashton Jeanty (Boise St) 5’9” 215-pounds  RB Quinshon Judkins (OSU) 6’0 219-pounds RB Jonah Coleman (Washington) RB RJ Harvey (UCF) 5’9” 208-pounds RB Ja’Quinden Jackson (Arkansas) 6’2” 233-pounds – Issues fumbling RB Treveyon Henderson (OSU) 5’10” 208 pounds RB Devin Neal (Kansas) 5’11” 215 pounds RB Omarion Hampton (UNC) 6’0” 220 pounds RB Nicholas Singleton (PSU) 6’0” 227 pounds RB Jo’Quavious “Woody” Marks (USC) 5’10 208-pounds   2025 NFL Draft WRs WR-Z Tai Felton (Maryland) WR-X Tre Harris (Mississippi) WR-X Ricky White (UNLV) WR-SL Nick Nash (San Jose State) WR-X Tetairoa McMillian (Arizona) WR-Z Kobe Hudson (UCF) WR-SL Kaedin Robinson (App St) WR-SL Xavier Restrepo Miami (FL) WR-X Andrew Armstrong (Arkansas) WR-M/ST PR-KR Jaylin Noel (Iowa St) WR-X Jayden Higgins (Iowa St) WR-Y Emeka Egbuka (OSU)   2025 NFL Draft TE TE Harold Fannin Jr. (Bowling Green) - outproduced rest of TE class against top 25 ranked teams and single-handedly beat PSU.  Prior to week 4 R1 I total yards (204) and YAC with 131. TE Tyler Warren (PSU) TE Jalin Conyers (Texas Tech) - After 3 weeks has an 83.7 overall PFF grade and with Texas Tech excelling in run-blocking. TE Brant Kuithe (Utah) TE/WR Oronde Gadsden II (Syracuse) TE Colston Loveland (Michigan) TE Terrance Ferguson (Oregon) TE Jake Briningstool (Clemson)
