Which QBs to watch

Recommended Posts

-Bryce Young, Alabama

-CJ Stroud, Ohio State

-Will Levis, Kentucky

-Hendon Hooker, Tennessee

-Tanner McKee, Stanford

-Tyler VanDyke, Miami

-DJ Uiagalelei, Clemson

-Spencer Rattler, South Carolina

-Anthony Richardson, Florida

-Phil Jurkovec, Boston College

-Cameron Ward, Washington state

First 3 are looking like a 1st rounders... We will see about the rest. I've been underwhelmed by Richardson, Jurkovec and Rattler from what I've seen.

Good list above.  Adding some of my initial, early season thoughts

IMO Young is the best college QB and is super accurate and can make plays with his legs when necessary.  His size is a concern.  He is approx 6 feet, but with a very slight build... built nothing like Russel Wilson or Kyler Murray.  Physically looks like a hs kid.

Stroud - a ton of people love him.  I'm still pretty skeptical.  Tough to tell how much of his success is due to the Ohio St scheme and incredible talent at Wr.  I have not been overly impressed when trying to look at NFL type throws in tight coverage.

Levis - might have the best physical tools in the draft. Dual threat.  Physically draws some Josh Allen type comparisons. Penn St fans wish they still had him vs Clifford.

Hooker - VT transfer...in the past has been viewed more of a runner, but seems to be improving in passing game

McKee - haven't seen enough but highly touted HS kid with big size, but not mobile.

Van * - I'm a cane fan and watch every game. Is dealing with a new offense and a decimated WR core.  Took over mid season last year so doesn't have a ton of starts.  Could have made a big statement with win over A&M, but entire passing game struggled and is dealing with conservative play calling.  Slow start to the season but hoping he reverts back to late season 2021 form.  Great work ethic and team leader.

DJ - huge disappointment at clemson. Was top HS QB along with bryce young.  Clemson is winning but if they want to contend for a title i could see them switching to freshman stud recruit Cade Kublinik who has shined in brief action.  Dabo did that before when he benched Kelly Bryant for Lawrence.

Rattler - eilte recruit.  Struggled at OU last year and was benched.  Transferred to South Carolina and he is struggling along with the entire team.

Anthony Richardson - incredible physical talent but also incredibly raw.  Strongest arm in the draft, dynamic runner, seen videos of him dunking from the FT line....  with that being said, still has no clue how to play QB and has like 6 starts in his career.  Very interested to see how he looks by the end of the year.

Jurkovec - ND transfer to BC.  I have been high on him for a couple of years, but been hurt and has not progressed as i expected.  Also need to take into account, that he does not have elite talent at BC.

Ward - dominated at FCS level.  Interested to see how he progresses in the pac 12 this year.

Going to be fun to monitor these guys and get everyone's opinions

Fully agree with this on Stroud. There are more than a few times he throws into coverages that will get him into trouble down the road against better defenses... He gets lucky by the insane talent of WRs at his disposal. That's just my opinion...

Agreed

The top 3 look like top 15 picks IMHO

Tyler VanDyke should be mid to late round 1

Rattler is off my list

Anthony Richard is another stinky game from coming off my list

I watched a bad game from Tanner McKee, but think he needs a deeper look

I need to watch some of these other guys a bit closer

I TRULY hope that if someone is in range at QB that we make the investment

The guy isnt perfect, but I would LOVE to have Stroud

He has the size and the arm talent thats needed

My logic tells me if you have a good QB with no receiving talent. He may excel in the NFL. Tanner is the guy I think I saw last year I really liked and wanted us to draft him and someone said he's not in 2022 draft. Obviously smart kid if he gets the grades at Stanford.

My logic also tells me Stroud will be average in the NFL.  Young at Alabama has talent around him as well.

Figured Josh Allen would be good because of those same reasons.

As of right now I'm keeping my eye on Tanner.

I'm an OSU guy and i'm not that solid on Stroud either. Obviously if the Colts find themselves in a position to pick him they probably should. He's a very good qb but to echo the concerns, he really hasn't seemed to elevate the team as a whole(with the exception of the Rose Bowl). OSU has had some slow starts this season offensively, as teams are playing a lot of 2 deep safety coverages not wanting to get burnt over the top and Stroud has had moments struggling being patient against it. He also very rarely runs despite having some good wheels. On the plus side he has some incredible accuracy while in the pocket and very good even on roll outs. Zero concerns about ball velocity.

QB Update - VanDyke was BENCHEDin early 3Q.  He and Canes in general are playing horribly vs MD TN St.  Fans are booing etc... This Josh Gattis conservative, slow paced offense is driving me insane.

Jake Garcia who was an elite HS QB from 2 years ago is playing much better but might not be enough to lead them to a come back.

Stroud has amazing accuracy, enough mobility to get it done, NFL size, strong arm, and quick release

You cant teach many of these things

IMHO, you cant really hold the fact that he has awesome talent around him ...... AGAINST him.......  He cant help that

He threw some absolute "DIMES" yesterday.....  2 defenders, and he put the ball in a VERY small space......

If we have a .500 year (a REAL possibility) I would give up quite a bit to move to get Stroud

If you are so inclined, watch the highlights from Tenn/Fla yesterday.......

AR redeemed himself a bit, and Hooker looked very strong.... depending on their predraft testing

Either may be a good pick for the Colts in the late first or 2nd (Maybe)

Tanner to me has had a very uneven season.......  I dont see "wow" at this point with him...... maybe he improves during the season

Young at Alabama has some amazing skills......  But he IS very slight in build......  He was the model for the original stickman drawing.....  I wonder how many NFL hits he takes before he gets carted off

Hendon Hooker is better than a lot of those QBs getting R1 hype. Watching him vs Florida now. I don't know if this is a regular level of performance for him or it's particularly good game for him, but he seems like he has it ALL! He has the size, the mobility, the accuaracy at all levels of the field and on variety of routes. He just executed a 2 minute drive like a pro. Moves very well and makes plays on the move too, both with his feet and with his arm... keeps eyes downfield when leaving the pocket. I'm loving what I'm seeing from him...

I think when it's all said and done he will be R1 pick if this is his regular level of play... or at the very least day 2 pick.

Damn... just saw a graphic saying Hooker is almost 25 years old already... that might hinder him in the draft.

Which could actually work in our favor it will likely push him down towards the mid to late 1st round at best. We always have the issue of not finishing low enough to get a top notch QB.

As a Wildcat fan I may be biased but from watching every snap Levis has taken the kid is legit. Arm strength, Accuracy, IQ, mobility. Pretty much every thing you'd want out of a QB.

Add to the fact the kid doesn't have five star recruits at the wideout positions that Stroud and Young have. They barely lost to a very talented Ole Miss team but that was a lot of unforced errors on the teams part and not really Levis.

Scangarello employs a NFL style offense as well so his growing pains as a rookie should be limited.

- Jaren Hall

Will ANY of these players be an NFL star...... Who knows???  I dont

But..... they are all better candidates with much higher potential than Sam E

75% of the above SHOULD be available when we draft....  Some will slide

I think until you HAVE the QB of the future on your roster ..., you have to at least try, each and every year....

Till you get your QB of the future

Cause THATS THE key to winning games in the NFL

Your tracking I said IMO?

I don’t have a warm fuzzy about any OSU or Bama QB, due to the bust and mediocre QBs, coming out the past 10 years or so now.

How are Stroud and Young better? Please, explain.

W. Levis, nice arm with some accuracy issues, but improving.

You think it’s a strong class, so be it.

Only when I know I’m 100% correct. Which I typically am, when I’m very adamant on something.

Sooner or later a QB from OSU or Bama won’t disappoint. Hopefully, we get one that’s the real deal.

I was listening to Middlekauff's podcast and he made this point too. He said Levis will probably be the #1 QB in the class and will be the easiest QB to evaluate because of the offense Kentucky runs. Scanagarello this year and the guy from the Rams (now with the Rams again as OC) last year. So it's the Shanahan/McVay offense. It will be a lot easier to project Levis to the pros compared to the QBs running spread offenses in college.

2 QBs rising fast are

Max Duggan-TCU- Dismantled Oklahoma, slight frame but very accurate 74.5% and has a 11/0 td/int ratio. Big game this week vs a very tough Kansas D (ESPN Game day is there this week as it is the national game of the week). If TCU stays unbeaten more high profile games coming up.

Garrett Shrader-Nice size at 6'4 230, big arm.  70.9 % and with a 10/1 td/int ratio. Syracuse come out of nowhere to move into 21/22 spot in polls with a perfect record.  Bye this week then some very tough games NC State,Clemson,Notre Dame if he mows through that gauntlet and looks solid stock will go through the roof.

I kind of dismissed DJ last year because he didn't look like an NFL QB to me when it comes to his processing and accuracy... BUT... he's been performing really well this season and both those concerns are being challenged by his play so far. He has a ton of physical talent. I want to see how he progresses to the end of the season. He will be a fascinating case come draft season.

Yep, Levis is one of the few QBs who actually run NFL type of offense. Takes considerable % of his snaps from under center... He's my personal favorite this year(not the best probably, but my favorite)

Saw some Jaren Hall tape. He’s got great tools. Big arm and super athletic. My only question will be how he transitions to an NFL offense. BYU has a lot of plays they script specifically for him. Designed QB runs, rollouts, etc…

Size will also be a concern. Listed at 6’1” 210 lbs. But I like his game. So far my guys are still Levis and Hooker.
