Will post news and pff irregularly... not weekly. When news happens, etc.. PFF every once in a while.

PFF

Walker - 90.8 - killing it....

Brissett - 64.4 - not great, no horrible. better Indy grade.

Wentz - 63.3 - same

Hooker - 70.3 - way higher lol.. about 90% of snaps.... would have been a better C3 S

Rock - 64.4 - not horrible

Autry - 57.8 - not a great grade, but 2nd in pressures and sacks

Houston - 77.7 - great grade... leading team in both pressures and sacks... so many said... "lost it, too old" lol... that was our scheme folks...

Glow - 48.8 - one sack allowed... well, we know he played better last year, than Pinter so far this year

Odum - 60.0 - not great, but higher than either Indy Ss

Pascal - 60.7 (his replacement in Indy is 77.6) - Eagles have only 4 WRs (injury?)... he is #4

AQM - 40.0

Stallworth - no snaps

Carrie - no snaps

Reed - 0 snaps

Turay - 0 snaps IIRC

No job - Fisher, TY

I think most of these players fit into that pattern of where Ballard signed stop gap vets to play until he drafted their replacements.  The plan was probably to always not resign them, because their replacement would have been drafted by then.  With the exception of a few, most seem to be playing at a level they did when here, but the problem is that their replacements are not playing as well.

Some thoughts and opinions:

Walker:  Was not signed back (I believe he was really cheap too) because Oke ...the guy with better traits....was drafted.  I found it odd that there was praise for Walker during the FA period...I think it was Frank but it may have been Ballard...who said that the was like a coach in the field and will be a great HC some day.....as they pushed him out the door.  Odd to praise someone publicly while letting him go for cheap.  Oke was viewed has having better traits for the scheme, which has now changed again.

Hooker:  Does Dallas still run the same Flus-ish scheme or have they changed it up?  IIRC, Hooker kinda struggled last year at DAL with the same issues he had here.  Maybe he's figured it out or got completely healthy.  In the end, Ballard had already drafted Blackmon to be Hooker's replacement (when we had Willis at SS), so, like Walker, Hooker's replacement (who is still penciled in at FS) is not playing as well.

Houston:  Like Autry, he played well when here, was getting older, and was pushed out the door to "see what we have" in Turay, Ben, and Lewis...who were Ballard draft picks.  Although, with Houston's age, I can give Ballard a pass for not resigning him.  Houston seems to be one of those guys who defies gravity, so Kudos to him and his team (still BAL?).  He would be nice to have though, as he played well in Flus' scheme while here and could probably play LEO better than Yannick under Gus

Autry:  Same as above.  First it was Lewis who was drafted to be his replacement, now its Dayo.

Brissett:  IIRC, he never threw the ball.  Had receivers open just never pulled the trigger.  Maybe having more experience has given him confidence to pull the trigger more.  Ballard over paid for what he was then...and that soured him to the franchise.  A better contract then might have kept him here as a backup.  He has never been signed as a starter anywhere else.

@EastStreet -- As long as you are doing comparative PFF stats, I would love to see all of the FA quarterbacks that we could have taken last offseason compared to Matt Ryan.

Mitchell Trubisky, Marcus Mariotta, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Jimmy Garoppolo, Teddy Bridgewater, Daniel Jones, Jacoby Brissett, Geno Smith, Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton.

Did we make a bad decision with Ryan?  Or would we have had pretty much the same QB production regardless of who we went with?

Daniel Jones playing lights out, not sure if a switch was turned or just a hot streak but by far best stretch of his career. Best comp %, highest td %,lowest int %.  Lets revisit him in 4 more games.

It is a contract year for Daniel Jones too plus the incoming GM and HC showed faith in him to give him a last chance. So he knows to shape up or he will be let go. Much like Jalen Hurts is playing like his QB seat will become hot if his passing does not improve, which it has over 2 games.

That would be interesting.  I think there is some danger to comparing QBs who might be playing different systems and have different weapons.  Mariota will have a high QBR because Arthur Smith is calling Read Option plays (where he didn't do that with Ryan) that Marcus ran at Oregon.  So I don't know that if MM is doing well in ATL, that he would do as well here...unless you want to change the plays to suit him too.  I see ATL doing that as a means to stay competitive and keep butts in the seats until Ridder is ready.  The Colts were supposedly wanting a playoff run so they were not going to change systems for a cheap FA QB, IMO.

Wentz' new offense apparently has him playing hero ball on purpose.  WAS defense seems to be poor and they need Wentz to sling it to his weapons of Dotson, McLaurin, and Samuel to keep up.  Again, that is a different purpose than when he was here.  So even if Wentz compiles better PFF numbers at WAS that doesn't mean trading him away was the wrong move.

Irsay needs to look at this offense holistically from the top down and see what schemes he wants and then get the players to fit them.  Currently, A QB that is a quick read and has a quick release and is accurate can thrive in this scheme.  Rivers did.  I don't think Wentz or Ryan are that QB.   I think Sam Ehlinger fits it pretty well, but he has some other limitations.

Can you find Winston.  Reportedly, that was who Irsay was flying to get just before Ryan became available.

How can 1 INT be 14th and 2 INT 8th?  INTs are bad, right?

Each of these former Colts are playing in different systems and with different teammates (good or bad).

So this is the proverbial "apples to oranges" comparison.

It also fits the "a change of scenery" comparison.

There are players we should have made a stronger effort to keep - agreed.

But not everything we see in the first two weeks will determine what we see later in the season.

Give OUR TEAM a chance to learn to play together as a team.

Saw today he’s out for the season.

Liked Walker. He made a ton of tackles and filled in for Leonard nicely when he was hurt. His pass coverage skills were a little suspect, which is why I think Mgt let him go.

Hate to hear the young man is out for the season.
