Derwin James and the Chargers have agreed on a massive 4-year $76.4M extension, which averages $19.133M a year and resets the safety market. This deal makes James the highest paid safety in NFL history, per source.

James was one of those "elite" players Ballard wanted in the 2018 draft when he took Nelson.  Or James was very close to being one of them.  Looks like he earned it?   

 

Not sure if this effects Nelson's deal, not the same position, but the year they were drafted and the status of the players at the time have similarities.  I haven't followed James' career but he seems to be highly thought of since being drafted.

From what I know on him, his biggest issue was some big injuries. I think 2 of his years were major injuries. When he has been on the field he has been top notch
