OT Bernhard Raimann could be one of the best picks in the draft.

I can't give up the idea of thinking Smith would be really good at guard and Pryor could play right tackle and we'd have Pinter as the backup guard and center

Don't want to commit a spitload of money to our C and both starting guards, without addressing either tackle position.

Would rather have Pryor at RG.

Why would you move smith to guard when he is close to one of the best RT in the league?

Because he was a guard originally and may be one of the best RG in the league. Plus, Pryor seems to be better at right tackle. It might be our best combination as a group.

Before last season Smith was a stud at RT.  He had a down year last year (like the whole line did) and was still good.   I would leave him there.

Nah...

RT is much more important than RG. And Smith is in elite territory at RT. #15 out of all Ts (L and R).

If anything (won't happen), they'd give him a shot at LT.

Most teams prioritize both T positions, followed by C and/or one of the Gs.

Typically they deprioritize one of the G spots. Colts have Q at LG, made Ryan the highest paid C, so pretty obvious their pecking order places less value on RG.

Also, on Pryor. He had his highest grades at LT. He posted a crazy high 87.7 in game 16 at LT vs the Raiders.

You homers should have witnessed that for a G that plays RT, Smith is near "ELITE" as a run blocker, but year in and year out, speed rushers beat him badly game in and game out. So you better see it coming and get rid of it like Rivers Excelled at, or be prepared for a number of hits and sacks.

Yes he was not very healthy last season, and no he did not play very well.

I'm not going to look it up again as I have already many times.   Before last season his number were amazing.  He went, maybe 2 seasons, without giving up a sack.  He is also a great run blocking RT.   Smith is great at pass blocking and your hypothetical does not scare me at all.

His 80.6 last season was his highest grade thus far. IIRC, his run blocking got better, but his pass pro took a hit in terms of sacks, but not really in terms of overall pressures. But overall, he graded slightly better than 2020 and 2019.

I feel very comfortable with Smith as the RT.

Yup. He's easily a top 5 RT in the league IMO.

Folks forget he got hurt, was out a bit early season, then it took him a few games to get back to elite level.

IIRC, he more or less had one "bad" game, and that was against Tampa Bay.

I liked our picks and have no issue with them at this point.

But the steal of the draft is probably going to be Nakobe Dean at 83.  I still can’t believe he fell that far.

I think his lack of height scared some folks.

Paired with Leonard, that would have been crazy good.

Yeah. He’s bound to have a major chip on his shoulder after falling so far. I called it when they picked him - steal of the draft.

A trio of elite left tackle prospects were taken in the top 10 selections of the draft. Trevor Penning made it four in the top 20 when the Saints took him at 19.

Many fans had probably stopped paying attention to the draft by the time the Indianapolis Colts took Bernhard Raimann with the 77th pick in the third round.

When we look back on this in a year, it could be one of the biggest steals of the draft. The 6'6", 303-pound tackle was the 28th overall prospect on the B/R big board and received a grade of 8.0, signifying a year one starter on his scouting report.

In other words, there's a strong chance the Colts were able to find a starter at a premium position in the third round. That's not something that happens often.

Raimann is an athletic marvel. He earned a relative athletic score of 9.87 out of 10, making him the 17th-most athletic tackle prospect since 1987, per Kent Lee Platte of Pro Football Network.

If the former tight end winds up beating out Matt Pryor for the left tackle job during the season, he will be one of the best picks in the draft.

What I would like to know is what was the  career paths of those other 16 LTs who had great RAS's? Just wondering.

My bad Scott, NCF corrected me on the Kelly situation re: swing tackle.  I like your line up IF Pinter can beat out Kelly at Center.  Maybe Kelly can bounce back this year.

Hahaha no worries! I am not sure if it is a matter of Pinter beating out Kelly at Center but Kelly at RG and Pinter at Center is better for the OLine in general. Kelly at RG could be a huge upgrade while Pinter at Center not losing much but the OLine in general is better in that configuration perhaps? There has to be a reason why they lined up like that........

In reviewing your list it appears that the players who were successful at the NFL level were also high 1st round picks. Is there one player on that list who had a high RAS, was a mid round pick and had a successful NFL career?

Just looking at their names, I'd say there are a lot more booms, than busts.

Might go as far to say it's a pretty decent indicator for success. Not perfect mind you, but nice indicator.

But that's just after after a surface look.

I'll dig in a bit later.

here ya go @AwesomeAustin and @Moosejawcolt

Name  *  Year  College  RAS  All Time

  1. Spencer BrownOT2021Northern Iowa10.00/10.00
    • 93rd pick last year (Bills), started at RT beginning in Game 4
    • I actually wanted this guy last season and was hoping we'd trade up back into the 3rd
    • Only gave up one sack, but his overall grade (60s) was average (to be expected for a rook)
  2. Samuel CosmiOT2021Texas9.99/9.99
    • 51st pick last season (Commanders), started game 1 at RT, but was injured and played only about half the season
    • gave up 4 sacks, but graded pretty strong (mid 70s) for a rook
  3. Taylor LewanOT2014Michigan10.00/9.98
    • 11th overall pick in 2014
    • Starter for Titans at LT.
    • 3 time Pro Bowler. Very good when healthy.
  4. Kolton MillerOT2018UCLA9.99/9.98
    • 15th pick overall in 2018, started at LT as a rook
    • Graded high (80s) last season
  5. Jared VeldheerOT2010Hillsdale10.00/9.97
    • 69th pick in 2010
    • Started both LT and RT in his career that has taken several turns (one with Indy), but retired now IIRC
  6. Matt WaletzkoOT2022North Dakota9.96/9.96
    • 155th overall in 2022 (he's a rook this season)
    • Cowboys have a top 10 OL, and a stud LT.
    • Waletzko will likely be brought along slow, but he's already high on all the depth charts I've seen. Guessing he'll be the swing T for Dallas, and challenge Steele down the road at RT.
  7. Trevor PenningOT2022Northern Iowa9.95/9.95
    • 19th overall in 2022 (another rook, and another N Iowa guy).
    • Most assume he'll either start day one at LT, or at some point early in the season.
  8. Sebastian VollmerOT2009Houston9.98/9.94
    • Retired now, but was the 58th pick in 2009.
    • Long term good RT protector of Tom Brady
  9. Lydon MurthaOT2009Nebraska10.00/9.93
    • 228th overall. Injured in year one, and never really challenged. Retired early.
  10. Brian MihalikOT2015Boston College9.96/9.93
    • This guy probably shouldn't be included. He was a DL in college, and they converted him once in the NFL IIRC. 7th round selection, and bounced around for 4 years
  11. Lane JohnsonOT2013Oklahoma9.96/9.92
    • 4th overall pick. Long term starting RT for the Eagles.
    • Multi Pro Bowl and AP awards.

    • 58th overall in 2020
    • Started both years at LG. Nice jump in performance last season. Only one sack allowed.
  14. Tommy DoyleOT2021Miami OH9.90/9.89
    • 161st pick last year by the Bills.
    • He's Buf's swing tackle, and caught a TD last season
  15. Robert GalleryOT2004Iowa10.00/9.88
    • 2nd overall pick. Retired now, but long term starter for the Raiders at both RT and LT
    • Probably should have left him at RT.
  16. Winston JusticeOT2006Southern California9.98/9.88
    • 39th pick overall 2006. 4 or 5 year starter for Eagles before injury.
    • Never all that great, but was decent until his knee injury. Spent one year with Indy.
  17. Bernhard RaimannOT2022Central Michigan9.87/9.87
    • You know the history here. Rook...
  18. Jared GaitherOT2007Maryland9.87/9.86
    • 2007 supplemental draft (bad college grades)
    • Pretty decent for a few years before injury cut his career short.
  19. Nate SolderOT2011Colorado9.90/9.85
    • 17 overall pick in 2011, retired IIRC.
    • Started early at RT for NE, and ended up long term LT. Clearly high performing.

You're welcome. Got done with chores and fam stuff, and didn't take me long.

But yes, the success correlation is pretty strong. No indicator is perfect, but this tracks pretty well.

Now back to work.. lol. Got some prep stuff to do for tomorrow. Gonna flip The Terminal List on while I work. Good show.
