Ryan Michael: Exclusive Interview with Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Matt Ryan

Posted on June 21, 2022

Over the course of his 15-year NFL career, Matt Ryan has exemplified what it means to be a leader on and off of the football field. The 2016 NFL MVP set the NFL's all-time single-season record for passer rating (regular season + postseason) at 119.9. He's won 120 games as a starter, including a dominant NFC Championship win over Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. He's only missed 3 games in 14 years, an on-field streak of durability and reliability exceeded only by his character.

I connected with Matt to talk about what motivates him at this stage of his career, what kind of impact Peyton Manning has had on his transition to the Colts and how he and his wife Sarah plan to support the communities of Atlanta and Indianapolis.

Ryan Michael: Heading into your 15th NFL season, what motivates you to keep coming back for more, specifically as it pertains to playing the quarterback position?

Matt Ryan: "I think my motivation heading into year 15 is really the same as it's always been. I've always been driven to try and do my part to help my team win a championship. I feel like that competitive fire is as strong now, if not stronger, than it's ever been in my career. I also feel like the experience I've picked up along the way is helping me play my position better than I've ever played it. One of the things I've always taken from when I was young is to try and see how good I can get. That motivates me the same way at 37 as it did at 15.

Ryan Michael: How big of a role has Peyton Manning played in helping to get you settled in and prepared to play football in Indianapolis?

Matt Ryan: "Peyton has played a big role in helping me get settled in Indianapolis. He was one of the first people I reached out to and he was extremely helpful in providing contacts for people in the community that have helped my transition. On the football side, it's been great to pick his brain about transitioning from one organization you've been with for a long time to another. I feel so fortunate to be able to reach out and pick his brain on basically anything."

Ryan Michael: "Matty Ice” finally gets to wear a blue uniform. Seems appropriate, no?

Matt Ryan: "Yah I'm fired up to put on the blue and white. The more l'm in Indianapolis the more I feel like this was all kinda meant to be and the blue and white, given my nickname, feels pretty natural."

Ryan Michael: You and Sarah have been incredible supports to the communities you’ve been a part of. What would you like to do in Indianapolis?

Matt Ryan: "We both feel like it's always been important to try and make our community a better place. We continue to be committed to ATL (Advance The Lives) which we started in 2020. The vision of ATL is to make sure every black child in Atlanta has equal access to opportunities. As we are making the transition to Indianapolis, we have been thinking a lot about where we can make an impact. We have always supported Children's Hospitals and Indianapolis is lucky to have one of the very best in the country. We are excited to be able to support Riley Children's Health. I was lucky enough to make a visit there during one of my first visits to Indy and saw first hand the amazing work they're doing. I think during our time in Indianapolis, focusing on highlighting the work that Riley Children's [Health] is doing and personally trying to put smiles on kid's faces when I make visits is something I think and hope will make an impact."
