Fisher has been stellar in run blocking. Hopefully he gets that pass blocking up to a better standard. Nice to see Rochelle playing well. Banogu should be a healthy scratch going forward and Rochelle should get to play.

Stellar? huh?

He's been good on a couple plays. The twitter world was going nuts over him pushing around a 230lb linebacker. Is that what you were talking about. Or was is the play he rag dolled a 200lb DB? He hasn't been very good in pushing DTs and DEs back. He has been good on getting out in space and blocking little dudes.

That Blackmon grade doesn’t pass the eye test.

Highest passer rating allowed on the team.

5 missed tackles.

That's why PFF has graded him low.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but how do they give a rating on coverage if they don't know the assignments?

welp, it's pretty easy to determine when zone is being played, and even easier when it's man.

only tough choices are typically on handoffs from zone to zone.

but i'm gonna guess the guys watching every play are probably very familiar with our D scheme.

sure there's likely some error, but doubt much.

I'm guessing schemes change week to week.    If PFF is able to figure out every teams coverage in 24 hours these folks should be hired by NFL teams.  If a guy at PFF is given the job of breaking down the Cowboys Patriots game and this person can figure out the schemes of both teams and figure out every positive and negative of every player without knowing the play call.  This guy would certainly have a job on a team.

I love when you do these.  Hope people realize how much effort goes into a quality post like this.  Gracias, my friend.

Thoughts: Blackmon’s coverage this year has been really concerning.

If this team had just one more coverage safety, then Willis would be the perfect extra linebacker/Rover type.  He’s so good when you put him in the box, and he’s an excellent blitzer.

I know that Hicks has advocated for the same, and I 100% agree with what he sees there.

Well, NFL does pay PFF for services.

Schemes and coverages change from play to play. Nothing new.

From what I read on PFF's grading, they have a few guys grading each team, and those same guys grade the team over and over.

So they're pretty well versed in tendencies. I can tell you what coverage they are in most of the time with a complete view of the field. It's not really rocket science. It's normally either C3 early downs, maybe a little C2, and then quarters or QQH on 3rd down.

And you can tell once the play starts if it's man or zone. Sometimes before the play starts if the opponent runs motion.

And like the OP says.... If you don't like PFF, just don't click...

You're more than welcome. Not so bad. I keep a sticky note that I just update, then paste.

I think Blackmon can turn it around in coverage. Most of his errors are IMO are maybe best described as lack of discipline. The missed tackles though are just as concerning if not more, and he's been considered a big hitter. He has 5 so far, and only had 7 the whole year in 2020. I think teams are picking on him a bit now that they have film. But we've had several guys picked on this year too.

I love Khari in the box. He's just not very good outside of it. C2 against speed WRs just won't turn out good for us. I blame coverage calls as much as I blame Khari. We just shouldn't put him those positions.

But I agree, we'd be much better off, and more flexible, with a better coverage FS. I was hoping Blackmon would look improved this year, but he's regressed a bit.... So I'm back to my original "he should be a SS" opinion.

We have no FS on our Squad Right now. I think Ccachere or Tell had potential to be that... If Blackmon was a beer he'd be called Willis Light lol...

Leonards passer rating allowed please. Thanks
Not that this shows much with Ebs zone coverage depths.
It is a give them a free toss defense then collapse as a team for the tackle while trying to create turnovers. Ugh to watch!
And doodoo against good QB's. JMO of course.

He's now around 97 after Houston. He had a great game stats wise. He was at 110ish, maybe 115ish, I think before. I'm sure he got bonus points for that INT. It was a bit of a gift, but it counts.

Okereke needs to step it up. Like, a lot.

I noticed one play in the Texans game the RB blew past him and he was completely turned around.

For being supposedly a coverage LB, those numbers are ridiculous.

Yup. He's never been good vs the run, so nothing surprising to me. The coverage numbers are a little surprising to me. Baltimore really picked on him. He was better in coverage vs Houston (Miami too), but those are both bad Os. I think he's likely also impacted playing all the downs/snaps this year too. He's used to being fresh and splitting snaps with Walker, and now it's every down....

I can't imagine a team watching our film, and not circling his number at this point...

Was pinter's % from filling in at center mostly?  (he didn't get blue ink but looks like he deserved it)  I wonder if they plan on including him more.  Seems like this team has really good depth at guard.

I don't think so. I think he's coming in a as a 6th OL a few snaps a game. And keep in mind he was a converted TE, so don't be shocked if at some point he checks in as a 6th OL outside the tackle as an eligible receiver, and gets a pass...

    • And those are about the best signings the Colts have done under Ballard in 8 years.    Has Ballard even spent over $10+m once in a FA? Gilmore maybe? That’s once. In going on 8 years.    Noone does what Ballard does and he hasn’t had success doing it, so noone’s trying to replicate it.
    • For your consideration….   Nobody knew who Ebukam was when the Colts signed him week 2 last year.   And nobody knew who Denico Autry was when the Colts signed him in week 2.   “Who?” Was the most popular comment both times.  They turned out really well.      Im not sayin Ballard is going to do it again this year, it hasn’t happened every year, all I’m saying it’s happened from time to time so it’s still possible that CB will find a keeper that people here will like.
    • Could he do it?  Sure, but it is much tougher for him than most owners in the NFL.  The Colts just layed out $200 million this free agency.  I imagine over half in guaranteed money.  That’s a lot for Jim.
    • With all that said...
    • Spending doesn't mean you will win. You still need to spend smart and you still need to draft well and overall make good decisions.    Not spending limits you in your roster construction. I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand. The best teams in the league use ALL available avenues for improving their team. They do not limit themselves artificially with what's possible to achieve. They also concentrate resources into windows of contention. This means at any given time, if you are not spending you are competing against teams that are pouring resources into trying to win it RIGHT NOW. You will just always be at disadvantage because while 1 specific team will need to reload and take their lumps for spending too much in short period of time once in a while, the league as a whole will always have at least a few teams that are in that high spending mode chasing a window for contention.    Now... is it possible you strike gold and beat those teams while relying almost exclusively on the draft? It's possible. If you string together a few insane draft classes. But it's not very likely...
