About those great first round wide receivers.....

Recommended Posts

Over the year,  we've discussed the success, or lack of success, of first round wide receivers.

I thought this series of factoids from a recent article in The Athletic was very interesting and informative....     but, you be the judge....

I'm cutting and pasting.....

8. First-round rookies rarely perform like No. 1 wide receivers right away.

It’s fun to put on our scouting hats and predict who will be this year’s version of Justin Jefferson.  But the truth is that Jefferson was very much the exception.  Over the last 10 seasons, 34 wide receivers were drafted in the first round.  Their median production as rookies was 605 yards.  Six of the 34 (17.6 percent) produced a 1,000-yard season as a rookie.  This year, five wide receivers were taken in the first round: Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, DeVonta Smith, Kadarius Toney and Rashod Bateman.  It’s an exciting group that should be fun to watch.  Perhaps one will emerge to be this year’s version of Jefferson.  But growing pains are to be expected.

In the years to come,  we can now go back and reference this info as the debates continue...

Last year, guys like Tee Higgins, Chase Claypool etc. showed you did not need to be a first round WR like Justin Jefferson or CeeDee Lamb to have production.

Lots of athletes aren't chasing the RB position and going to play WR more in high school, IMO, given the RB trends and injuries in the NFL/college. The WR depth in college seems to have been real good the last couple of years, and might continue to get better.
