SCOOP: The #NFL is opening the NFL Combine up to a bidding process stating with the 2023 event, after what will be its 35th year in Indianapolis. My latest for @IBJnews:

Really doesn't make sense to open up the combine to other cities, it's not a massive fan  attendance event the way Super Bowl or the Draft are,but maybe the NFL is planning to make it one.

I can't see the combine ever becoming a massive fan attendance thing.

It's too long and for the most part all most people want is to see some of their favorite players run the 40 and do a few of the drills.

They arn't going to sit in the stands for hours and hours just to see that stuff in person.

There is a reason why the NFL network is the only network that I'm aware of that covers the combine.  You can watch the draft on multiple channels.  The Super bowl, the TV networks bid billions of dollars to host the SB.  The combine most of the media could care less.

Indy has done well with it.  I think it will be a mistake to move it out.  I think if they do they will start hearing from coaches and front office staff who liked being able to stay in an area where everything they needed from their own personal lodging to hotel meeting rooms to the stadium itself was all in one central location.

I don't see Irsay trying to outbid someone in LA or NY. Bad move, IMO.

Let coaches and front offices decide instead of doing a bidding process, given their logistics.

The cities will be bidding,   not the teams and owners

I'm not a fan of it moving, not just because it would be leaving Indy, but you're now adding variables to what was always a consistent evaluation (not that combine performance should carry a ton of weight in prospect evaluations). Performances at the combine from year to year were able to be compared on even footing with the common location and surface. A new city every year makes it so that you can't do that anymore. You also potentially introduce even more uncertainty of climate/weather for any non-dome teams (unless it would be hosted at an indoor facility away from the team's stadium). I get teams don't like that Indy has had exclusivity on the combine, but it's just silly to move an event like this around on a yearly basis.

I'm hoping that, since this is inevitable, that Indy moves up as an option for hosting the draft or another super bowl. If the league really wants to show this is about giving cities and their teams more options to get things, then I would like to see hosting Thanksgiving day games becomes available as well.

Do we as fans get any advantages if the combine is in Indy?  I think information is pretty controlled, and when its released, its released to everybody.  As a fan who isn't going to watch a bunch of college players run through drills over and over, it wouldn't matter to me.

So the bidding process would work how?  The host city would give the NFL money up front to locate the combine in your city, then hope there is enough money spent in the city by the teams/players and fans to offset your bid?  Money up front then hope to get it back later.

I understand there are indirect financial benefits to events but this is kind of a wonky business like event that bidding for it by cities hardly seems worth the risk of investment.

I think this is disappointing, but not surprising.   The NFL has discovered everything can be monetized.   I don’t see this event as a big money maker, but I think they’d like it to try and not cost the league any money at all.

Free rooms, cars, other transportation for players getting bused around.  Anything that the NFL might currently be paying they will hope the bidding city will pick up all costs.

Because this event happens in the dead of winter, I think only cities with a domed stadium stand a chance.   Can New York, Philly, Boston, Chicago or Green Bay host in Feb or March with the cold?   Can Miami, Tampa, J’Ville, Charlotte host with the possible rain/hurricanes?

If I’m Indy,  I’m stressing the city knows how to run the event like clock work.  Why risk that a new city might need time to get up to speed?

And, as a wise poster here already pointed out, Indy is the ONLY place where all athletic performance on a year to year basis is an apples to apples comparison.   Any other domed stadium will likely have a surface that will be faster or slower but not the same as Indy.   That destroys comparisons on a year to year basis.  That’s not a small thing.  Hopefully teams can help sway the league.

I agree.

I'm sure there is an advantage to the city holding it.  Lots of scouts and media in the hotels and restaurants.

It'll be a fairly big loss for Indianapolis.   Financially and for publicity.

Publicity yeah, but financially, it's not like it's GenCon or FFA leaving....

I would like the combine come to Palm Beach/West Palm Beach and add a few events on the beach....like a 40 yard dash on beach sand....surf casting....etc.... haha

I doubt the NFL will have players running on sand ever again.   It ruined Robert Edward's career.
