Still Hoping for Ertz

Recommended Posts

I had to click cuz it could have been literally anything.

I may be wrong, but i think that ship may have sailed.  Reich seems to really like this new kid. Not sure thetes room for a 4th TE.  And i dont see doyle or mac goin anywhere this year.  I could see a guy added to the PS.

There are quite a number of guys at different positions that i see having more value on the roster than Ertz.

But, I’ll be ok with whatever.

I doubt we grab Ertz if he is even cut (not looking likely). Plus why so many think Doyle gets cut for this move makes little sense. The coaches and Ballard love him. He gets the first down catches when we need him but more importantly he blocks better than majority of TE’s in the game. We are run heavy team so his value comes a lot more than just catches and yards. If for some reason they grab Ertz if cut then you pair him with Doyle to create a strong group not cut one and create a weakness.

I will say I doubt we grab a TE that will want 8mil per year. Even a 1 year deal doesn’t make sense for us here. After signing Fisher we have roughly 13 mil for the season. Ballard doesn’t like being strapped during the season.

Given the numbers, the fourth TE will be a practice squad developmental player. Look for a converted college lineman or a college basketball player like MAC. They could also ask Strachan to bulk up and learn how to block. How frightening would it be to have a TE that fast?

  • Shive changed the title to Still Hoping for Ertz

We still have Noah Togiai, who we stole from the Eagles last year and gave him the Patmon treatment so as not to lose him....he is a move TE.

We still have the physical freak in Jordan Thomas.

And we have the Chargers hard knocks star TE Andrew Vollert all on the roster.

Granted, Ertz is a pro bowler but the cupboards aren't bare here in Indy.

You can't tell me Reich won't be pounding the table for Ertz if he is released.  He will be pounding.  I think Reich and Ballard are patiently waiting and hoping for his release to happen.  We have already seen it multiple times.  If Reich wants a player Ballard will do his best to get him that player.

I don't think Ertz at this stage of his career is a big upgrade of our group.

Supposedly he turned down 2 contracts from the Eagles

He MAY think he worth more than he is

It COULD happen, but probably not likely now

It depends how much Ertz will be asking for. Over the cap is projecting the Colts will be at $83 million in cap space for 2022. Subtract $35 million combined for Maniac and Braden then you're at $48 million. Fisher (If he plays solid), Big Q, Hines, all need extensions; TY and X man are only signed for one year. Big financial decisions will come for Ballard next offseason.

If Ertz is cut, don't be surprised if Ballard offers him a 1 year deal in the $8-$9 million range. I don't see him going over that. Maybe he'll take less to come play with Carson and Frank.

You can bet if Ertz is cut and Frank wants him we will sign him.  I am not worried at all about extending our players.  Ballard has it all accounted for.  We have some contracts we could restructure if need be.

Ertz hasn’t delivered an $8-9 million dollar season in a couple of years, due to injury.

So if Ertz comes available, I’d be surprised if we didn’t have at least some interest.   But NOT at $8-9 mill per year.   Way, way too much.   Maybe something close to half that if we’re signing him this summer or in the first week of September.

I agree. We should offer a 4/4.5 mil offer at most. I am on record saying we don’t sign him anyways but we only have like 12 mil in cap now anyways so 8 for a year straps us and that is opposite of what Ballard likes to do.

It’s not official, but I’ve seen two stories in the last few weeks that referenced a number at $203m.     It is NOT official.

The big bump, expected in 2022, is now expected in 2023.   That’s when the new TV money will kick in.

Were at $182.5 this year.   So next year gets a roughly $20 mill bump.   That’s a good bump.  Just not the great bump most thought might happen.

The benefit is in 2023 they are estimating a jump to roughly 230 mil with the new tv money kicking in. So basically over the next two years if all goes right our extensions won’t strap us to bad at all.
