Day 2 and 3 Prospects You Like for the Colts

Recommended Posts

The first round prospects get most of the attention and rightly so. I wanted to bring up some other prospects the Colts might target in this draft on day 2/3.

There are a couple of considerations I made while making this list that are worth mentioning:

  • The emphasis on the Senior Bowl during Ballard's tenure.
  • The willingness to stack up on needs. (Nelson/Smith for OL in 2018, athletic defenders in 2019, Pittman/Taylor as offensive playmakers in 2020)
  • Emphasis on football character. (read up on Brian Decker, watch their With The Next Pick series Colts.com has done the last couple of years)

That isn't to say all of the guys I listed below fit each of the points above. Here are the guys I came up with as potential Colts targets so far.

  • Payton Turner, DE - To me this guy screams as a Chris Ballard pick. He has size, good athlete, and high effort. He is versatile and can play multiple spots on the defensive line.
  • Carlos Basham, DE - Another DE who had a good Senior Bowl. He doesn't have the length of Turner or great quickness.
  • Elerson Smith, DE - Yet another DE who was good at the Senior Bowl. I'm not sure he is a great fit for the Colts defense but he is quick and has great size. He needs some development but could be a target towards the middle of the draft.
  • Osa Odighizuwa, DT - Smaller but made a lot of plays at the Senior Bowl. Quick for a DT and high effort.

  • Jamin Davis, LB - Linebacker isn't an obvious need but Ballard has repeatedly emphasized his value on the front 7 in this defense and not just the 4 linemen. Davis is big and a good athlete. He doesn't have a ton of experience though. Walker left so maybe Speed sees some of his defensive snaps and Davis can contribute on special teams his first year or two.
  • Tre' McKitty, TE - He could add another element to the offense that I think the Colts want. He was named the top TE at the Senior Bowl. He transferred to Georgia last year but didn't have the production he hoped. He still supposedly maintained a good attitude and worked through it which is the type of character the Colts seem to look for.
  • Spencer Brown, OT - Huge but good athlete for his size. Probably a developmental prospect but I think he has the makeup of what the Colts look for.
  • D’Ante Smith, OT - According to his draft profile he has an 85 inch wingspan. He is a good athlete for his size too. Another potential linemen for the Colts to develop.

  • Paulson Adebo, CB - I'm probably alone in this but I think it's more likely the Colts don't draft a CB than they do. They are bringing back Rhodes, seem committed to Ya-Sin, and Tell/Rodgers has shown promise. Plus Kenny Moore is in the slot. And they have no 3rd round pick and plenty of other areas to address. With that said, I think Adebo checks off a lot of the boxes for Ballard in what he looks for in cornerbacks. Another cornerback that would be a great fit for the Colts is Greg Newsome but i'm pretty sure he is projected as a 1st round pick.

  • Simi Fehoko, WR - Good size and really fast but he is raw. I think he is projected as a day 3 pick right now but the Colts have been taking WRs to develop the past couple of years so maybe Fehoko continues that trend.

Obviously i'm no scout or watching film. I watch college football some but haven't seen all of the guys above. The Colts clearly have a philosophy for drafting players and these guys fit that, IMO. Of course, there are plenty of others that we can mention. Who do you like for the Colts as a day 2/3 selection this year?

Most of these guys would make up my list as well, especially the bolded ones. I would also add Jonathon Cooper out of Ohio State at edge, Darius Stills from WVU on DL, Derrick Barnes, LB, Purdue, and Khalil Herbert, RB, VT. I find Cooper and Toney particularly interesting. It doesn't appear that either of them could be an every down DE, but could either or both prove to be really valuable pass rush specialists?

Unlike a lot of other posters who seem to think this team has glaring needs all over the roster, I really only see LT and pass rush as areas where the Colts really need a boost. With the signing of Xavier Rhodes, the return of Marvell Tell, and just another year of experience for RYS, Rodgers, etc., I think are DBs are going to be just fine (doesn't mean we shouldn't draft one if the right guy comes to us, just that this does not need to be a top priority.

On the DL, I really like Darius Stills as a back up 3-tech to Buckner. It was pretty clear how much Buckner's presence changed the defense, and I think adding some really high quality depth at that position would be a really smart insurance policy for this ball club.

Still hope they get TY and Houston re-signed, draft an impact edge rusher early, one of the Ts listed above and maybe a stopgap vet at LT. If they take BPA with their other picks to address depth and other areas of need, I think we end up with a loaded and deep roster capable of challenging the best in the AFC.

WR;  Jaelon Darby, Frank Darby, Ben Showronik

TE:  Quintin Morris

OT:  Myron Cunningham, Brenden Jaimes

Center:  Jack Wohlabaugh

EDGE:  Jordan Smith

CB:  Shakung Brown, Greg Newsome

There is some really interesting talent to be found in the later rounds that could decide the quality of this years draft for the Colts

Israel Mukuamu, South Carolina, 6-3, 205  Big guy who could thrive in the Tampa-2 system.  Imposing presence who can make the tackle on his own.  Has experience at safety.  Does not have the quickness for man coverage.

That guy is BIG

He may ONLY fit in our style of defense.

On one of his interceptions he was beat deep ugly, and the QB underthrew it badly

This is a guy that might still be there at 5th / 6th round

Thanks for compiling

I saw some tape on Brady Christenson, and he could still be there into the 3rd round (If we gain a pick thru trade)

His tape and measurables are similar to some of the other OTs that we would be considering
