Free Agency: Day 5

Recommended Posts

New day, new thread. A lot of off-topic discussions in the last one, so let's not carry them over or do the same thing in this thread. If you have opinions about what the Colts are or aren't doing, or the teambuilding philosophy in general, this is not the thread for that discussion. This is a thread for posting the latest FA moves, rumors, etc. and discussing them.

Hoping Kyle Fuller release official today and CB goes and gets him.

I'm pretty sure it was official yesterday. He's my #1 priority FA at this moment, although I have a feeling he's going to sign a 1 year deal somewhere to position himself for a much better payday next season when the cap jumps again.

Day 5. We went from "we're getting this guy, this guy, this guy and this guy, to "I hope we can get a waived player", and "The "The DT that two teams gave up on that we signed is HUGE" I'm being a bit jaded, but at least sign Fuller or Rhoads today, at least do that. And if we can't get TY today, can we at least go after JuJU or another WR that's available??

Been very quiet so far, kinda weird. I wonder if Ballard is eyeing Ertz and hoping he gets released. Also think they're trying to sign our own guys that probably are trying to hold out a little bit to see if anymore offers come their way. Those guys are probably TY Hilton, Rhodes and Houston.

I remember seeing this post yesterday and I think it provides a solid check to our expectations:

i just looked up how long ballard usually takes signing free agents because i was worried . it seems like all his free agents signings came at least 7-10 days after free agency starts .   justin houston  eric ebron and rhodes all signed after ten days after free agency started in the past .    ballard never signed any one in the first 3 days that i noticed .  i think we see some signings next week that is when ballard feels like he gets the good deals

I would add that people need to stop replying to posts that they consider off topic......and then complaining about the thread being off topic.  It makes it very difficult to tease apart what people want to talk about and what they don't.

I was panicking and even starting complaining on one thread that we have to many holes for the draft to cover alone . Then  I decided to look up how long Ballard took in the past to sign free agents and I felt dumb for complaining.  I think Ballard just  knows we have big contracts coming up and needs to get guys cheap who can out perform their contracts .

For the vast majority of the players that's true, but it seems like a player was signed in the first few days in 2017.  Can't remember who.  It wasn't a major signing.

The thing is you and many other posters here (fans) assume these guys are elite. In many situations they are not. Ballard is a smart conserved GM who doesn’t just throw money at guys for no reason. JuJu isn’t that great of a WR but some team will pay him 15+mil per year. That’s a dumb deal and I’m glad we have a guy that looks pst this.

I’m just gonna say this, for about 28 of the 32 teams in the league, yes, it’s been a very quiet week. Not unexpected. Anyone who paid attention about the salary cap situation expected this, for the most part.

Exactly. This was to be expected, that there would be a long waiting period between free agents and teams making moves. The players are hoping for money, but the teams are hoping they’ll temper expectations and take the lower deal after enough time passes.

Just gonna say this, Ballard with his patience skills would make one hell of an Army Sniper. Sitting in the weeds for weeks on end waiting for that perfect single shot!

Or a good poker player that does not reveal his cards.

ballard must not see a need for any maybe  he thinks we have the talent we need on our roster, we do have a lot of bodies

I pretty sure he knows we some folks in critical positions of need. He’s not done yet, just biding his time waiting for the market to settle a little. I think we have some extensions he wants to iron out before the season.

Isaac Rochell career stats w/Chargers

2020 29 combined tackles / 12 assist / 2.5 sacks

2019 12 combined tackles /  9 assist / 1.0 sacks

2018 29 combined tackles / 11 assist / 5.0 sacks

2017 4 combined tackles / 0 assist / 0 sacks

Looks like he's gotten better as his career has advanced.  Good upside.  Situational DE

    • Very true.  Josh Allen is another one.  The Bills traded for Diggs to help him out and they took off.  Now he’s gone.  I expect the Bills to do something big again to help him out.  Once you get your quarterback the next step is making sure he has the weapons around him.  Right now AR has some real quality weapons.  Getting him another one could really set the team up for a nice run.
    • Yes, if I'm forced to choose, I'd go with Williams, despite him earning some reputation with all the garbage talk from his camp even since the year before the actual draft. I read a scout saying that the PR guys (including his father) Williams has led him to those bad reputation and decisions, when he should've gone under the radar with much more good vibes surrounding him. Anyway, it's on him now to prove by his play in the NFL.   I'd also go with Daniels, as Williams seems just out of reach for anyone other than Bears. Concerns with Daniels are about his durability and the ability to dissect NFL defenses, but if he becomes injury prone in the NFL, at least that'd help the team to move on to finding the next franchise QB.   My overall gripe with this QB class is that no one stands out as being strong in his ability to go through progressions and reads, as many of their offenses seemed to involve limited reads. So it falls squarely on the individual's intelligence to be able to translate at the highest level, and there's no way any fan like us would get to know without working him out and bringing him in for interviews - which teams are doing with those QBs. So, NFL teams will need to figure out who among this class can consistently pick apart NFL defenses or at least grow into that level.   This QB class is different because the tape of them doesn't tell that part of the story due to the offenses they played in.
    • It is about who will have a greater impact. Cj stroud is surrounded by more talent on offense  than Richardson  currently. We need to close the gap. Zone corners will be there in the second.  If we go wr in the second  all the best ones will be gone and we may be stuck with another Alec pierce
    • The only similarities that Ballard and Veach have is that they were both on KC at the time Mahomes was drafted (Veach is the GM now obviously), and they both build well through the draft. Other than that, they are different in every other way as GMs.    You are correct, Ballard is more like Dorsey. Ballard is actually best friends with Dorsey. They had a thing in the draft where Dorsey always prank called Ballard during the draft. Was kinda funny.    If AR hits, then we will have gotten there as a playoff team the slow way. However, with Ballard, it will have taken a lot onger than it ever should have. People can blame Lucks retirement, Reich, or whatever, but GMs generally don't start with a franchise QB when they take over a team. IMO, Ballard was a scout who had no idea how to be a GM when he took over, and when Luck retired, it completely exposed him. He finally figured it out 7 years in his tenure. Might be too little, too late.
