I would love for CB to move up and get Pitts (TE) but I’m guessing we stay at 21 and take Paye, edge out of Michigan

Man, I really don’t see Paye being anywhere close to 21. He’ll be one of the first three defensive players taken. I still think we should take an LT at 21.

I can see this years draft strategy being similar to last years.  Same circumstances.  Last year and this year we acquired a QB that we thought we could win a SB with.  Rivers and now Wentz.  The team is still in a win now mode with a very strong roster that just made the playoffs.  After signing Rivers last year what did Ballard do with our 1st pick?  He traded it for Buckner and filled an immediate hole.  Then he used our 2nd rd picks to fill skill position needs in Taylor and Pittman. I think we will follow the same blueprint.  I can see Ballard trading our 1st pick for a CB like Lattimore and solidifying a need.  No need to trade it for an ER or WR because FA will have many good players available there.  So I think he will sign an ER and WR in FA and use our 2nd. rd pick to get a LT or G and move Q to LT if the top LT's are gone.  Regardless I can see us trading our 1st for an impact starter again.

I really don't see Ballard trading the first round pick this year. Or even trading down out of the first. If Wentz hits the 75% snap count, and barring injury he should, that would be 3 years in a row without Ballard making a first round pick. Not sure that's the route he wants to go.

LT, and its not even close.

I think there is a good chance that EDGE gets addressed in FA.  There seems to be quite a few available.

JMO.

I'm not disagreeing with you but Let me ask you this. Lets say Colts upcoming schedule is Tenn, then Houston then Chiefs.

Would you be ok with a more average LT that can have TE help or a lesser pass rusher and depend on scheme to get pressure?

My opinion is that a legit pass rush is more important      I've been wrong before so there will be no offense taken if you think I'm wrong

LTs play every down.  I think with Buckner, our 3T who will play every down, our EDGEs will be more rotational.

Sure, the talent level has to be equal between the edge at 21 and the LT at 21, but in answering the question about what position to take at 21, I choose LT because of the way our dline is structured.

Fair enough.   Were either going to have one of the best Olines in the league or one of the best Dlines in the league.

I miss the days of Freeney and Robert Mathis I guess.

As we all know we had some glaring needs to address with the retirement of both Rivers and Castanzo. But with the recent trade of Wentz what position do you think the front office will address with the first pick? Will it be Left Tackle? Will it be a Edge Rusher? Will it be a cornerback or will it be a Wide Receiver.  I know we must wait to see how free agency plays out. But I’m curious as to what folks think we will address in the upcoming draft. My guess is it will be Left Tackle. This draft is deep and full of good high quality prospects. There are some line man that are expected to slide  to the latter of the first round potentially being available even in the second round. I think we will grab a LT to sure up that offensive line for years to come.

No one. Ballard will trade back and look to recoup draft capital.

LT

I've read (admittedly don't know personally) this year's Tackle class is deep, so hopefully that's where the board leads them.

Since Ballard gave up picks for Wentz, I'd bet he trades down for more 2nd rounders since he "love those picks"

I'm definitely not sold on Ballard picking DE with 1st rd pick (he does better picking O-linemen than DE's by far)

I'd also like them to re-sign Rhodes so CB isn't a bigger concern than it already is.

Lots of playoff teams tend to replenish the cupboard for OL typically, so Ballard is more likely to get a premier tackle at No.21 than say mid 2nd round. However, if he gets his LT in free agency, he might be fine with settling for the 7th or 8th best tackle in the draft than going for the 3rd or 4th, at which point the BPA might swing in a different direction.

It depends where in the second the picks are.

I wouldn’t wanna even make the deal for an early 2021 2nd, and then we don’t even know where the 2022 2nd would end up. Now if you’re moving down from say pick 27 overall that’s a different case.

I think we should start with getting the obvious open holes covered with Tier 2 FA players (or Tier 1 FA, if price is right)

The two main holes are LT and DE

If we can plug those holes with FAs, we can draft a true BPA and not be forced to draft to a position to fill an immediate need.

Assuming all picks stay in their current slots, left tackle. There is likely to be a run on tackles as we've seen the last few years, the Colts can't rely on a starter quality tackle being available at 54. The free agent market has better available defensive ends compared to available offensive tackles.

That pure speculation, we don’t know that to be the case.

U are absolutley right. However, he is giving up a 3rd this year and minimum 2nd next year. I suspect their is a very good chance he tries to move back this and next year. He does, however, have some cap space to fill the void , but he has some key players coming due for big contracts.

I would GUESS that we trade back for a 2nd and a 3rd or 4th, pick Walker Little OT in the 2nd and pursue JJ Watt to play opposite of Houston(bringing him back). Also possibly try to see if the OT we cut to go play with the packers is available to help while Little is getting going. WALKER is a 6'7" 320lbs from Stanford, was projected as a 1st round talent prior to not playing during covid. He seems to be a beast blocking and can be nasty in run blocks. Good match with big Q

I expect the Colts to sign Villaneuva and a DE in FA. I then think they trade back to possible pick up 2 2nd rounders and pick the 2 best out of TE, CB,WR or OL with those 2 picks.

I think Villanueva is a perfect 2 year pickup for this team... I saw one site that had him at 15M... OUCH

I can also see CB trading around.

He typically puts a first round grade on 12-18 players, and if they arent available, he will trade to get more picks

IMHO, Ballard will stay true to what resulted in the NFL recognizing our 2020 draft as the #1 rated draft in the NFL:  He'll stay true to the board.  He will move back to pick players they've targeted at certain positions but, not over reach for them.  He'll use that to his advantage and gather 1-2 more picks in the process.  The guy has proven his worth and is doing an incredible job.

I do believe we target a DE in free agency though because as it's been mentioned, we've not had a lot of success in finding those in the draft or at the spot we are picking.  I don't blame that on Ballard, it's just part of the results of the process.  Dawson would be a great pick up here.  LT, CB and WR help is in obvious need and I believe one or more of those will also be addressed in free agency and Ballard will work the draft to address the others.

i heard this draft is packed with tackle talent so colts can find another braden smith in the second and get a top tier edge rusher in the first or corner

I share your sentiments. I'd like to go CB in three agency they always say it takes a few years for CBs to develope. Id like to sign one or two shut down corners and draft a young DE in the first.

It's hard to get good DEs in free agency that aren't old. If Rousseau is available we have to draft him in the first. Tackle is a deep class this year we can get one in the second.

I've been wanting a 1st round standard DE for what feels like forever but weirdly on this occasion I think I'd rather go with LT.

The reasoning is that there's no point throwing all the resources that we have done at the O-line and then leaving it's weakest point at the most crucial spot. If it's going to be our offensive identity and strength then we have to make sure it's solid at that LT spot. If we could fill this gap outside the draft then I'd be delighted and we could move on but I don't see a way to do it.

The hold at DE still remains though and until we fill it we're never going to be in the top echelons of the AFC. Giving these QBs time to throw is suicidal and while I like Buckner he will be easy to defend on his own and won't get enough pressure by himself.

IMHO,  There is a strong belief that you will fail in the drafting process if you are solely drafting for need, vs a BPA approach

If we have to count on 2-3 rookies to start this year at positions of need, we may be pushing them too fast, and/or continue to have a hole on the roster.

If we can change the cap hit on Buckner (he wont take a pay cut, just designate the pay differently) we can pick up some nice

cap dollars.

If we decide to chase a tier 1 FA OT or DE, they will eat up much of the available cap.

It will be interesting how CB plays this

I think it will be a LT...as predictable as the Kelly pick in 2017. So I probably won't waste time looking at other positions...outside of maybe EDGE.

I don't see him trading down again. It's their best chance to add an impact at LT...or really any position.

The "boring" offseason would be to see them draft a LT to replace AC, draft some 2nd round CB to replace Rhodes, sign a TE in FA to replace Burton...and then re-sign the core 3. But I could definitely see it happening.

    • Rick Venturi today on the radio said he is more of a fan of speed with corners then what Ballard has done. He said young corners have to be able to recover from mistakes. I would almost like rodgers instead of Brent’s.
    • BBZ, what do you mean when you say Brents will be successfully targeted because of his size and speed? Aren't those his good traits?
    • Right. But we also are expected to draft a corner, So the fact that DeJean can play either position, makes me think Ballard could have his eye on him.
    • As a Ballard type player, he seems to fit the bill.  Big 10. Excels at zone coverage. Elite athlete. Special Teams standout, Good tackler. etc. Colts may be able to trade back, and still land DeJean   Considered one of the Safest picks. Seven 2024 NFL Draft Prospects Who Are Safest Bets to Succeed at Next Level https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113875-7-2024-nfl-draft-prospects-who-are-safest-bets-to-succeed-at-next-level   DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa   A fractured fibula during a November practice tempered any excitement regarding Cooper DeJean's draft status. So he's not been in the same conversations as the class' top defensive backs, specifically Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Alabama's Terrion Arnold. DeJean's profile projects just as well or better than the aforementioned cornerbacks.   Three specific attributes set DeJean's floor higher than anyone else among the back end.   First, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year presents the positional flexibility and traits to start at cornerback or safety at the professional level, with B/R's Cory Giddings highlighting his coverage skills:   "DeJean excels in zone coverage, but he's versatile enough to play man as well. He shows a smooth backpedal and the ability to keep his leverage and quick footwork with few wasted steps. Although he transitions well, there are times where DeJean hops into his breaks; allowing a step of separation.   "When in zone, DeJean does a great job of reading and reacting to the quarterback's eyes. Pairing that skill set with his route recognition, he often puts himself in good position with leverage and positioning.   "While working downfield, DeJean has the strength necessary to hand-fight with tight ends and bigger receivers, as well as the speed necessary to carry twitchier receivers downfield. He also does a very good job of locating the ball and playing through the catch point."   Second, the high school track standout is an elite athlete who captured Iowa state titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Many expected him to blow the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to test in Indianapolis after being cleared a few weeks earlier.   "His acceleration is incredibly fluid and super powerful," NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman last summer. "He's the best athlete I've seen in person, pound for pound."   Finally, DeJean adds significant value as an elite collegiate returner. Big Ten coaches also awarded him Return Specialist of the Year this past season. DeJean averaged 13.1 yards per punt return over the last two seasons. A top-notch contributor anywhere along the defensive backfield and on special teams will provide excellent value in the NFL.   Potential Landing Spots: Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
    • He could, but I think he's way more athletic than people give him credit for and projects way better as CB. Definitely could be a good safety, but I think if we drafted him, he fits well as a boundary corner for us.
