Should the Colts have contracted with Brady instead of Rivers?

Recommended Posts

Rumor has it Brady's had interest in indy. The colts were not interested.

Speculation by Peter King was that the colts were interested in a shorter deal than Brady wanted

Truth is I'm not really sure, but with the Bucs making the NFC championship, it's an interesting question.

The only mistake the Colts made with Brady is not drafting him in the 5th round in 2000 to back up Manning.

Indy his first choice? Seems kinda doubtful that’s true...

If the Colts defense forced 4 turnovers in the playoff game or stopped playing Jekyll and Hyde throughout the year, we might have been just as good as the Bucs in terms of results.

Hopefully we don't make the mistake of resigning Rivers.

Defense did their job. They got a big sack and forced the Bills out of FG range. Offense didn't get the job done.

Very interesting. I mean, the eyeball test of course says Brady is doing a lot better in performance...

Definitely has a stronger arm at this point in the game compared to Rivers.

I look forward to your noodle arm 2.0 thread

I'm not for nor against signing Rivers back. I just think we can spend the 20+ elsewhere, but the question then becomes do you roll with Eason, do you trade for a vet QB like Carr, Ryan, or Stafford, or do you trade up for say Trey Lance

I would be fine going into 21 with this

Rivers Lance Eason

Or

Jones Brissett Eason

Haven't watched much on Mac Jones, but I heard the Pats are interested at 15

He's not mobile but is very accurate. He will definitely need a good line to succeed.

We have that.

Take a quick look. Nice touch, but not much of an arm. It does discourage me though that a lot of his throws were either to wide open WRs or Smith making a ridiculous catch.

his receivers are elite so he does lose lots of credibility with that. I think his stock now is bottom 1st - definitely day 2 pick

He has definitely started to trend in the wrong way

Irsay is definitely big on loyalty, he wouldn't have done that to Peyton IMO, no proof of course. A disrespect type thing.

If he were never our rival, he would've definitely been an option for us.

actually the right way

before this year he was probably mid rounder

this season amplified his stock

Yea, but both his WRs are going in the first round. That's going to be hard to separate. Look at how much Tua struggled and both his WRs went in the first round.

I'm not so sure you're getting wildly different results if you swap Tom unto the Colts this past year.

The Colts don't have anything approaching what TB has in terms of WR's and I think that unit is picking up Brady's game at this point. He looks okay, but he's not driving the thing.

WOW  I thought we were in all in mode??  Truth is we are in some trouble next year.  I think Rivers was Rivers and done what he has done his whole career, Thank you Phillip, you got us to the playoffs, and silenced the mob, for another season.  We have free agents that will want raises if we want them to play for us next season.  Our current system is not going to work.  we payed our current backup QB 10 million this season for being a good  locker room guy?  Frank is not going to coach us to the ring. Chris is great at drafting talent, but doesn't seem to have much say, so on how we retain them.  Jim, I think you are the best owner in the NFL, but your hope of drafting another Peyton, or Andrew, to right the Horse is futile at best.

I hope I am totally wrong, but  I am a COLTS fan, and this is MHO.

    • I'll pile on you here. Ballard has put together a great team since taking over in 2017. We lost Luck (I blame a combination of Grigson and Luck himself for this), and that ruined 2019 and stunted our growth in 2020 with a one-year stopgap in Rivers. We have Wentz now. He's 28 years old. We'll get a decade out of him to compete if he's above-average or better. He has the chemistry with Reich.   Remember, if Ballard hadn't built a solid team before getting Wentz after Luck retired, we'd be back to 2012. However, because Ballard did the foundation first, we can now try and compete again for a decade with Wentz immediately. We have a few weaknesses, but we have the draft and the rest of the offseason to fill them. We do need to improve our DEs. We can still sign Houston back and/or draft an EDGE in the first two rounds. CBs we re-signed Rhodes and Carrie, and Ballard has shown interest in Newsome, Farley, and Asante Samuel. We could easily take a CB at 21, or trade down and get one. We will get a couple starters out of the draft.    I wanted an EDGE too, and thought it was a mistake to sign Hilton back and not an EDGE in FA, but we have to re-sign our own as well, and a 5 year deal to an EDGE for 12-15 million a year will take away money short and long-term. We have a reduced salary cap this year. The rest of that money will go towards draft picks, offseason depth signings after the draft and UDFA's, and Braden Smith, Darius Leonard, and Quenton Nelson.
    • I believe he was. However, this is like year 2 of Tell's contract and development, so bringing Carrie back will give him an additional year to develop. Maybe he makes the team, maybe he gets placed on the practice squad. I have a feeling he isn't going to be expected to play too much this year unless he proves it in OTA's and preseason, or unless there are a couple injuries.    Plus, Kenny Moore plays slot and TJ Carrie is a backup slot CB. So if Moore is specifically hurt, Carrie could probably fill in Moore's spot 75% as good as he could. That alone is worth $2 million this year.
    • I did wonder in 97 after he took full control of the team, how close were we to a Jim Irsay owner/gm situation? It honestly had to be a powerful temptation.
    • Surprised he’s back.  I thought he was brought in last year because of Tell opting out but i am not mad or disappointed he’s back.
    • So far, so good.  He bought us some time at CB, bolstered the OL depth, added an exciting prospect at QB,  And even tho 1 year deals, i thought Rhodes and Carrie was big.  Also TY and Mack.  I liked what we brought back.  I think Houston is a good possibility too.  If that happens i feel prettygood going into draft.   Ballard isnt done. Its a good draft for WRs and OL.  This not only helps us in draft, but there will be some interesting cuts later at the positions as well.     I’m ok with us being quiet early on for the BIG contracts that rarely cashin.   Sign our own, make wise fiscally prudent choices that fit our scheme and locker room, and provide depth at all positions for competition.  Looks to me like he’s doing just that.  Now going into draft focus on LT and edge rush primarily and maybe try to improve WR , DL, and TE positions. Maybe target CBfor future. Other than that, i think the roster is pretty exciting.
