Saints 2021 Cap Situation (Must See) **Eagles on page 2 ***Steelers/Falcons on page 3

Recommended Posts

Figured I would delve into what the Saints will need to do to field a team next year. Will go with reports Brees is done and base off of $176m cap floor.(Saint really need this to go up).

2021 Cap Space: -$99.8m(negative)

46 active players

Drew Brees retire - $13.5m savings

Kwon Alexander release - $13.4m savings

Emmanuel Sanders release - $6.4m savings

Nick Eason release - $6m savings

Janoris Jenkins release -$7m savings

Will Lutz release - $1.55 savings

Thomas Moorstead release - $2.5 savings

Josh Hill release - $2.65m savings

Malcom Brown release - $5m savings

Total savings: $58m

Cap Space: -$41.8m(negative)(savings are estimates)

37 active players

Cameron Hayward restructure - $7.6m savings

Micheal Thomas restructure - $9m savings

Andrus Peat restructure - $6m savings

Daniel Onyemata restructure - $3m savings

Total Savings: $25.6m

Cap Space: -$16.2m

37 active players

Terron Armstead release/trade - $6.6m savings

Latavius Murray release - $2.5m savings

Marcus Lattimore release/trade - $10.24 savings

Patrick Robinson release - $2.6m savings

Ryan Ramczyk release/trade - $11.06 savings

Taysom Hill release - $5m savings

Total Savings: $38.6m

Cap Space: $22.4m

31 active players

Need to sign 22 players plus PS

That was harder than I thought it was going to be. It will be a full rebuild for NO. They really put themselves in a bad spot. I guess they have this last year(this year) to compete for Championship.

 Other potential options:

Trade Hayward -$9.6m savings

Just an ugly scene.

They are in terrible shape

Better hope they win it all

Beyond terrible.

If they lose tonight or anytime the rest of the year it was all for naught.

They desperately need the cap to come in higher than $176m. Even if so still got to blow it up.

Im sure they will look into trading all players that I have released above to save as much money(not much more if any that I have on releaee)as possible and get draft picks.

Would love Lattimore at $10m for Colts though. Maybe a few of those guys.?

Probably our #1? Maybe we could trade a #2 and RYS or something. Give them a young low cap guy?

I think he would be my #1 trade target if Rivers is back, if Rivers is gone probably would be Stafford.

Ouch

It's pretty crazy. They might end up keeping Hill, but imo almost everything I have listed here would need to happen if cap stays at $176m.

I'm still in favor of trying to get Watson even for multiple 1s

Joel Erickson used to cover the saints. He said they have a terrible cap specialist. Apparently they keep adding voidable years on to contacts and what happens is that all comes due at the same time.

Yeah they have multiple guys next year that have dead voided cap space.

Rankins

Davis

Cook

$8.3m

A few other guys dead cap space on there as well though too. Think Brees has 2 years.

They just have way to many high priced guys with a ton of dead cap.

Would love to get Lattimore here.

If for some reason Flus leaves for Houston, that would make Aaron Glenn that more attractive to me, hopes we could bring Lattimore with him.

Time for Ballard to go shopping...

Lot of quality talent may be available

Colts need a LT and corner. Dont the saints have all pro types at those positions? Still i doubt we make any huge signings besides our own.

Id be interested in 2-3 of those guys.

1. Lattimore - $10m cap hit, likely sign to long term extension, cost a 1st or 2nd+.

2. Armstead - $11.7m cap hit

3. Ramczyk - $11m cap hit

Maybe we could trade our 1st and 2nd/or 3rd for Lattimore and Armstead?

Would be if Rivers was returning most likely.

So that would be maybe $36m out of our $68m if we could get Rivers to take around $15m.

Those guys would be nice gets in areas of need.  I do agree that if Rivers is brought back, the Colts need to load up more on win now types of moves.  Taking advantage of teams in cap hell is a nice way to do that.

It's really almost a perfect match if we can put a deal together.

With all those moves they still have pretty much no money to spend($1m a player to fill team).

Lattimore

Armstead

For

1st

2nd

RYS

Maybe conditional 2022 pick?

Would give them 3 players toward their 21 needs and all pretty cheap and young. Draft picks and young players will be what they are searching for in any deal.

Would give us a #1 CB and a LT to replace AC.

Went all in for Brees last year. Now the must tear it down.

I feel bad for some of those vets, they will likely be one of the worst teams in the league next year.

Creates an interesting question: is it better to try and go all in with an aging and beloved vet, or try to bridge the gap between the old and new era?

Exactly my thought on this. Ballard is essentially trying to do the opposite of what the Saints have done. We could have easily gone nuts a year ago and brought in all these free agents with Rivers.

I think there is a happy medium, I think unfortunately for them, they mismanaged the cap extremely bad and are about to feel the effects for the next few years.

The Covid cap ramifications really hurt them bad as well. They wouldn't of been in nearly as bad of shape if the cap would of been around $220-$230 like it was projected to be before Covid took it's toll.

Happened to Jaguars to. Couple years back they had all that cal space, spent it on a bunch of guys, did make AFC Championship game, but them had to burn it down.

Keeping fingers crossed they release Ramczyk.

Probably wont release.him, bit will most likely trade him.

Do you want him for RT or LT? Think he can switch over to the left side?

They dont have an option, unless cap comes in significantly higher than $176m.

Literally all that(OP) would likely have to happen.

LT.  I think he can switch.  Trading makes the most sense and it shouldn't be hard to get a nice pick.  I'm saving my 1st for Stafford though.  But if that falls through.....well....

Yeah they will be trying to acquire as many picks and young guys as possible this offseason.

I like Stafford as well if Rivers retires, if he's(Rivers) back though, these could be great moves for the organization.

Im going to go over the Eagles cap situation later. They seem to be in the same boat as the Saints in this regard. A lot of voided money in future years.

Sure am glad Ballard knows what hw is doing.

Yeah it is. Said that in the cap thread in the Colts section, I don’t see how they can manage that

For as much flack as he gets, he does seem to do a decent job with the cap. And it pays dividends in a year like this. If the fans got their way the last two off seasons, we’d be sitting in the exact same boat as both the eagles and Saints or worse

    • Ended up doing another mock draft using NFL Mock Draft Database's simulator with no trades. A few of the same players, but a few new ones.   21. Teven Jenkins | OT, Oklahoma State - Jenkins ended up falling to 21 in the mock and I decided to take him. Despite the belief that he's a RT or G only, I think he's got what it takes to play LT and lock down the left side of our line with Q.   54. Ifeatu Melifonwu | CB, Syracuse - I think the most prototypical CB in the draft for our system. He's not as much of a physical freak as his brother, but I think he's a better football player. I draft his teammate at Syracuse in my last mock and honestly, I'd take either of them in a heartbeat.   127. Chris Rumph II | EDGE, Duke - See 1st mock. Smaller, explosive designated pass rusher   165. Josh Imatorbhebhe | WR, Illinois - See 1st mock. Developmental WR that could be an absolute steal.   206. Jamien Sherwood | S, Auburn - Sherwood played safety in college, but I see him more as a dime backer or even converting to OLB (6'1.75" 216lb, 34" arms). He gets a lot of comps to Clayton Geathers and I think they're pretty spot on. He is much better in zone coverage than man and is best playing up in the box. In the pros, I see him moving to OLB and I think he fits our mold pretty well, as I can see him putting a little bit more weight on.   248. Tarron Jackson | EDGE, Coastal Carolina - Developmental edge prospect that seems to have been gaining quite a bit of attention and played in the Senior Bowl. I don't think he'll fall this far, but if he does, it's a no brainer.   I'm not as happy with this one since the edge players I took are both guys that are more developmental than anything. I think this one is hedging our bets that we see some much needed improvement in Banagu & Turay, so we wouldn't need draft picks to step in immediately.
    • The opposite is the consensus, where you refer to positional depth.  The dropoff in OT talent from #21 to #54 isn't huge.... The dropoff in talent at DE from #21 to #54 is close to precipitous..... Many scenarios in which they go DE at 21 if they decide to keep the pick.
    • TRADE 9:   Steelers get pick No.111 from Jaguars via Bengals Jaguars get pick No.128 and No.140   @EastStreet @NFLfan
    • Hey everyone.  I wasn't able to commit to participating in this, but have read through all the rounds of the draft you've done.  I don't follow college football overall that closely, mainly watch IU games and other big games I'm able to watch.   Just wanted to thank you all for educating me on this year's draft prospects so I'll be able to watch the Draft with a bit of knowledge on some of these players.   It's really helpful when I see names in the draft that I've read about on these mock drafts.   Again, thanks to all of you!  GO COLTS!!!
    • Honestly?    I have no idea?   I think this may be unprecedented...   a QB dealing with epilepsy?    I think it’s unknown.   My fear, is that teams don’t like Big Question marks at that position.   I wouldn’t begin to know.   I hope for the best...  (but I fear the worst — draft wise).
